Maryland Fall Tournament (9/26/09)

Postby DumbJaques » Wed Aug 26, 2009 7:09 pm

The Maryland Academic Quiz Team will be hosting our annual Fall Tournament on Saturday, September 26, 2009. Like last year, we will be using an HSAPQ set, which will be 20/20 tossups and bonuses. I've been told that we are tentatively assigned Set 8, for reference. I expect it to be pretty accessible, and I hope we continue to get some of the local teams who are just starting to get more heavily involved in the circuit - this event is certainly meant to be a good place to start a new year of competition. Traditionally, we've often attracted a high number of national contenders as well (even when we used the local It's Ac format, bizarrely), and we expect the same this year.

REGISTRATION:

To register, please contact TD Jeremy Eaton at jay5006@aol.com. Let us know if you're interested/confirmed and how many teams you'll be sending - we'll try to keep a very current field on this page.

PRICING:

Base team fee: $70
Additional teams: -$10
Buzzer system: -$5/system
Dedicated staffer/moderator: -$10
Minimum fee per team: $50

FORMAT:
Like last year, we plan on giving teams the chance to play a lot of quizbowl. There will likely be bracketed prelims followed by playoff brackets of some size and configuration depending on field size. As with last year, we will be running these brackets for anyone who enters this tournament, regardless of prelim performance - consolation rounds will run and be fully recorded (and placement fully resolved) for all teams who choose to stay. Teams will have the chance to leave after prelims, but are heavily encourage to take advantage of the extra games, which by definition will be the most competitively appropriate for all teams. The exact number of rounds won't be set until the field size is confirmed, but last year teams got around 10-12, so we'll be shooting for around that.

Please email me (volkov3000@yahoo.com) or Jeremy with any general questions/comments. We hope to see soon!

Awesome. We'll be there. We already planned as such. Right now put us down for two teams and i'll tweak that if i need. I can help moderate and we have a buzzer set.

Really? Who is using Set 7 in the Mid-Atlantic region then?

EDIT: Or, wait, IS this the first ACF-style packet?

Centennial will probably come, but we a) have to wait for school to reopen and b) have to see how many will be able to come.

Thank you George for the link to College Park.

Seems like this is a 3-3.5 hour drive each way...so, I'll survey my kids & see if they are up for a "wee" bus ride to open the season. So, for now, color us "interested".

But one big question: The HSAPQ Set # 8 to which you refer---can I assume it would be different from the U of Penn's packet for its QuAC in November? Or would this assumption be a mistake? Any way of finding out, since if both tournaments would be using the same set, Penn would make much more geographic sense for us.

Just to address this question in here, Penn'll be using a different set than both Maryland in September and TJ in October, so people can attend all three without issue.

If this tournament were moved to Sunday, would that be an attendance obstacle for anyone? This is entirely unlikely and would really only be done if it works for absolutely anyone, but I thought I'd ask.

Ehhh... we'd prefer not to. It certainly is nice to get home at like 8pm after a 90-120 minute drive on a Saturday and still realize "whew, no work/school tomorrow." That, and i know we have students with more religious obligations that could be conflicted.

Sorry to hear that, Bill. The field will remain unlocked pretty much perpetually barring any surprise issues with room reservations that force us to cap it, so if the team does get together and you decide you'd like to make it, there should still be room.

Field Update:

Caesar Rodney
Thomas Jefferson 2
Centennial (1+?)
GDS 1+
St. Anselm's
Whitman
Wilson 1-2
"Brake High School"
SJHS 2 (probably)
Seton Hall
Kellenberg 2
Howard
Gonzaga
Hammond 1-2
Glenelg 2
South River
Richard Montgomery 2
Owings Mills
Calvert Hall

If I could hear from TJ, Centennial, GDS, Wilson, and Hammond regarding the exact number of teams you'll be bringing, that would be great. Right now, we're looking at anywhere from 20-30 teams, so there's still plenty of room.

Right now Wilson has 1 team (*AND ONE BUZZER*). I will let you know for sure on Monday however, as I am trying really hard to convince some of my younger players to go. (How I can have 14 kids at practice and 5 that want to go to a tourney is something I will never understand  )

Edit: Telling Maryland folks that I am bringing a buzzer system as well

Funny! I end up having the exact opposite thing (less so this year) of a half dozen people at practice but like 20 who ask when they can go to the next tournament. But getting them there is the problem... i won't be taking a big group (5 teams?!) til Charter's in December. Hope to see you at Maryland, though.

St. Joe's is about 90% sure it can come---the coach is ready, 9 students are ready, even the bus is ready---but is there a bus-driver who is also ready? This is the issue. If we find one willing to work roughly 16 hours---and my AD seems to think we most likely will---we will be there with 2 teams and 1 buzzer. If not, we still wish everyone a great time. But we certainly hope to join the fun. We will probably know for certain by Monday, Tuesday the latest.

We've had a number of additions to the field over the past few days, so it would be cool if Centennial, GDS, TJ, and Hammond could confirm how many teams they'll be bringing. Also, is the Fake Blake team confirmed in/out, or still on the fence?

We'll be in the Reckford Armory (see http://www.parking.umd.edu/themap/), although some rounds will be running in the Math building (just across campus drive from the Armory). Right now the tournament is scheduled to start at 9 am, with registration starting at 8:30. We'll update with the specific registration room closer to the date.

Parking for the tournament will be easy, since you can park in the L lot that surrounds Armory at any time during the weekend.

I sent an email to J. Eaton on like Thursday. We're definitely in.

TJ will be bringing one team and two buzzers.

Sorry to change this, but we will actually be bringing two teams and two buzzers.

St. Joe's will be there with 2 teams and 1 buzzer.

I assume registration will be in the Reckford Armory on the College Park Campus? Or will it be in the Math Buillding across the street? And, can school buses park on campus?

For bracketology purposes:

St. Anselm's is going to be severely undermanned at this tournament. I am going to be the only regular A-teamer in attendance, playing with 3 B-teamers so that means we're going to be missing a little more than 60% of our normal scoring. Make of it what you will.

Also, Blake will consist of a C-teamer, someone who has never played before, an inanimate object, and me.

Yea, CR will be undermanned too. We will be without our Science player, so we will have close to zero science knowledge. The Battle of the Handicapped Teams should be interesting.
