Stanford's Cardinal Junior Classic (11/15/09) [date change]

Post by cardinal »

The Stanford Quiz Bowl Club is pleased to announce the annual Cardinal Junior Classic for high school quiz bowl teams, to be held on November 15, 2009. The tournament will be held on Stanford campus, beginning at 10 AM. Please be aware that this is a Sunday.

Format: We will be using NAQT Introductory Invitational Series IS-87A, which are slightly easier than NAQT's non-introductory questions. The NAQT website provides a packet of sample questions. The tournament will follow NAQT rules, with the exception that each round will be un-timed and will consist of halves of ten tossups each. We will strive for between eight to ten rounds. The top 15% of the field (rounded up) will qualify for the 2010 High School National Championship Tournament, to be held on May 28-30, 2010.

Each team must consist of players from the same high school. Only four team members may play at once, but substitutions may be made during the match. (Teams with fewer than four players are fine.) There is no limit to the number of teams a school can send! We encourage sending multiple teams instead of sending teams with alternates.

We will also be offering a full copy of the questions for sale. 576 recent, high-quality questions, for $20!

Location: Old Union on Stanford Campus, Lasuen Mall & White Plaza, Stanford, CA 94305. There is parking in the nearby Tresidder lot. Check-in will begin promptly at 10 AM, with a quick rules meeting shortly thereafter. Please arrive on time; teams arriving late risk forfeiting matches.

Registration fees: We encourage new schools to get into quiz bowl! We will offer a discount for any team that did not compete in a weekend quiz bowl tournament during the '08-'09 school year. Quiz Kids and weeknight BAAL matches do not count against you.
  • $85 for a school's first team
  • $75 for each subsequent team
  • $50 for each team from a new school
  • -$5 for each working buzzer system.
To register, please complete the registration form. The deadline to register (or cancel) is 5pm on Saturday, November 14. Late registration must be approved by the tournament directors. And please, please don't cancel at the last minute.

Payment will be due at check-in. You can pay in cash or with a check made out to "Stanford Quiz Bowl Club". Teams who don't pay on the day of the event will be subject to a $20 late payment penalty, unless prior arrangements have been made. Please let us know if money problems are keeping your team from attending.

Feel free to contact tournament director Jason Ma at [email protected] with any questions.

Bellarmine will be attending, sending multiple teams

No idea how many other Bay Area schools use these forums...

What's keeping this tournament from getting Gold Qualifier status for PACE NSC?

"Gold-certified tournaments are affiliated tournaments which offer all teams at least seven games,"
CJC will have 10 preliminary rounds

"use varsity-level questions deemed "good" by the PACE Certification Committee"
CJC will use NAQT questions

"and have at least two teams in attendance likely to finish in the top half of the NSC."
CJC will have two nationally-competitive teams from MSJ, one competitive team (maybe two) from Bellarmine, and a Berkeley team that went 5-5 at HSNCT and returns its two top scorers.

Northern California is a growing quiz bowl powerhouse, and this is the biggest, best-organized tournament of the year.

What is it missing?

PACE doesn't award certification until after the tournament has been completed. It's just easier to award the certification and additional bids after the fact, than it is to try and anticipate the tournament meeting our requirements and possibly having to revoke certification and bids if it does not live up to those standards.
