NHBB Nationals Wild Card Policy

Postby Jcrmoon42 » Tue Feb 13, 2018 4:11 pm

The National History Bee and Bowl will be holding its 2018 National Championships on April 27-29 in Arlington, VA and Washington, DC, which is just 3 or 4 weeks away from when the following tournaments will be held:

1. KY History Bee & Bowl State Championships - March 31, Woodford County HS, Versailles, KY
2. North Florida History Bee and Bowl - April 7, Spruce Creek HS, Port Orange, FL
3. Minnesota Spring History Bee and Bowl - April 7, Burnsville HS, Burnsville, MN

Please note that as these events are running so close to our National Championships, any team attending one of these events can apply for a wild card bid to our 2018 National History Bowl National Championships. Wild card bids are not granted automatically, but teams that can show that they have a solid chance of posting a 3-2 record at the regional tournament will have their bids granted. Any team interested in this option should email David Madden at director@historybowl.com with a list of their most recent all-subject quiz bowl tournament results, any results from NHBB competitions in the past two years, and any other supporting information. For individual events, students must still qualify, either at a regional tournament, or by doing exams with a school proctor for the US History Bee and the US Geography Olympiad / International Geography Bee. Note that if a wild card bid is granted, the team still must compete at a tournament in order for the bid to be eligible (i.e. the bid is still good even if the team goes 2-3 or worse in their matches, but not if they avoid the tournament altogether).

While there are other NHBB tournaments on these late dates, this policy does not apply to them as there have been earlier tournaments in those regions this school year.

This policy also applies to teams that were originally registered for an event that was postponed or canceled due to weather. In such cases, teams may apply for a wild card berth even if they go 2-3 or worse at the make-up tournament as we can not guarantee the same field they originally signed up for.

If you have any further questions about the wild card process, please email David Madden at director@historybowl.com. If you have further questions about the Minnesota tournament, please email Marshall Mullins at marshall@historybowl.com If you have questions about the North Florida or Kentucky State tournaments, please email me at jason@historybowl.com
