GSAC XXIV Mirror Requests

Post by parthenon » Sat Jun 18, 2016 8:06 pm

The twenty-fourth incarnation of Maggie Walker Governor's School's GSAC is now seeking mirrors! The mirror fee will be $12 per team attending, and the set will be available from December 10, 2016 onward until the end of the season (this date may be flexible if you feel that you can only mirror it some time before that). Please contact me at parthsemail AT gmail DOT com if you are interested in hosting a mirror or if you have any additional questions.

The set will be head-edited by myself and written by myself and other members of the Maggie Walker team. In keeping with tradition established last year, we will be power-marking the set. This year, we have enacted more strict distribution of each category to ensure equal representation from time periods / geographic areas / whatever.

The distribution is as follows:

4/4 Literature
4/4 Science

1/1 Bio, 1/1 Chem, 1/1 Phys, 1/1 Other (Math, Astronomy, etc.)
4/4 History
1/1 American, 1/1 European, 1/1 World, 1/1 Ancient/Modern (post-1945)
2.5/2.5 Fine Arts
2/2 Religion, Mythology
1.5/1.5 Philosophy and Social Science
1/1 Geography, Current Events, and Other Cultural
1/1 Pop Culture, Sports, and Other Trash

The difficulty of the set will be near what it has been for the past two years, which have had +.2 and -.14 stat adjustments compared to IS-sets, i.e. very close to what is considered regular difficulty at the high school level.

Can a private group be set up to discuss this set?

Since there's still no discussion set up I just wanted to throw some general thoughts out there. The set started out alright, if not a bit stocky- there were also some weird difficulty changes (really/unnecessarily hard bonus parts or really easy tossups; I think a few odd powermarks as well?). However, there are definitely questions that need to be reworked- for example main characters really shouldn't mentioned in the first line of lit tossups, especially in the finals packets!

I'll cite some more specific examples if/when a private discussion is formed.

I second all of these things. The finals and 3rd-place matches at the site at which I played hinged at least partially on the aforementioned question and one other that put the name of the lead of a composer's best known work in the first line.
