New Orleans Middle School Kickoff 9/14 (Metairie, LA)

Post by Kevin »

Archbishop Chapelle High School is proud to announce that we will be holding our first ever middle school quiz bowl tournament on Saturday, September 14th.

Registration/check-in for the tournament will take place from 8:00-8:45 a.m., with a welcome meeting for coaches & players at 8:45. Preliminary games will take place from 9:00 a.m.-noon. A complimentary lunch will be provided in the cafeteria from noon until 1 p.m. Playoff and consolation rounds will take place from 1:00-3:00, with an award ceremony at 3:15.

In addition to lunch, the tournament will also provide complimentary donuts, juice, and milk in the morning, as well as a hospitality room for the coaches. Trophies will be provided to the winning and second-place teams, as well as the top 5 individual players.

Fees: The entry fee is $40 per team. There is a $10 discount for each buzzer system (minimum eight working buzzers) that a team brings. Payment may be made by cash or check on the day of the tournament.

Field size: We are limiting the field to 24 teams--depending upon the number of staffers we are able to get, we may increase this number, as well as the number of teams from each school. We will have separate championships for a junior division (6th grade or below) and a senior division (open to anyone 8th grade or below). The tournament is open to any public, private, or parochial schools who wish to attend. Any school with at least one grade of 8th or below may enter.

Format: The format of the matches will be 20 toss-ups and bonuses. On toss-ups, players will buzz in. Teammates are not allowed to consult on toss-ups. If a player gives the correct answer, he or she will normally earn 10 points. If the player buzzes in early enough, he or she will receive 15 points. If a player interrupts the question with a wrong answer, he or she will lose 5 points and the toss-up will be finished for the other team. There is no penalty for an incorrect answer after the end of the question, or if the second team interrupts with an incorrect answer after the other team already lost five points.

A team that correctly answers a toss-up will then be given a three-part bonus question. The moderator will read the first part of the question; the team will then have five seconds to consult and answer the question. After the team responds, the moderator will say whether the answer was correct, and will give the correct answer. The moderator will then read the next part, and so on. Each bonus part is worth 10 points. Only the team that answers the toss-up correctly will have a chance to answer the bonus parts.

Questions: Questions for this tournament were written specifically for middle school students by the staff of the 2013 Texas Quiz Bowl Camp, which included many of the country’s best high school and college players and coaches. The questions will be similar in length, difficulty, and content to previous versions of the Collaborative Middle School Tournament. Those questions may be accessed at: http://www.quizbowlpackets.com/558/

To register, please e-mail [email protected] with the number of teams you would like to enter and the number of buzzer systems you will be bringing. The registration deadline is September 9th.

Thanks to all the teams who attended, and especially to the staffers who helped the tournament run smoothly. Congratulations to Lake Castle for winning the tournament, and to Holy Name C for winning the junior (5th/6th grade) bracket. Congratulations to the top individual scorers: Emeka Emetuche, Tristan Cole, Louis Lamy, and Benjamin Young in the senior division, and Catherine Bickerton in the junior division.

Man, Emeka brought the pain. Is Lake Castle a feeder school? I hope he goes to a HS with a decent quiz bowl team in a few years.

Lake Castle is a non-religious private school and I think their kids end up all over the place. One kid had a Jesuit t-shirt on, but I heard that Emeka is going to Franklin.
