Gladiator Fall Tournament [MS-11], 11/8/14 in Elm Grove, WI

Post by MichaelFalk »

Dear coaches, players, and quiz bowl aficionados:

St. Mary's Visitation is pleased to invite you to the fourth annual Gladiator Fall Tournament 2014, to be held on Saturday, November 8, 2014 in scenic Elm Grove, WI. This is an open junior high (up to grade 8) quiz bowl tournament to be played on NAQT'S MS-11 question set. As such, it is a qualifier for MSNCT 2015.

Teams should expect 7 to 9 rounds of pyramidal tossups and three-part bonuses played according to NAQT rules (with the exception that rounds will be untimed and consist of two ten-tossup halves with bonuses). This means that teams will be allowed four players at a time (plus substitutes) and bonuses will not bounce back.

The entry fee is $65 per team, with a $10 discount for each buzzer system you bring and a $10 discount for your 2nd and subsequent team.

Please arrive between 8:15 and 8:30 AM. A brief rules meeting will take place at 8:30, and play will begin at 8:45. We will take a lunch break, during which you can eat a lunch you bring or you can avail yourself of the area's many dining options.

Please note that this is the same question set being played the following weekend at the Loyola Academy Middle School Tournament, so if you are a feeder school for Loyola, you won't be able to play at our tournament, though we do hope to see you in the spring.

SMV is easy to reach from I-94, 15 minutes from downtown Milwaukee and 90 minutes from the Chicago Loop. To reserve a spot (or spots), please email at mfalk at stmaryeg dot org.

Hey Mr. Falk, this is Peter Chmiel from last year's Station Middle School Team. Do you need any extra moderators or scorekeepers for this tournament? I was coming along with the rest of the team as a coach, and I am wondering if you need any help.

Dear players, coaches, and interested others:

Our fourth annual Gladiator Fall Tournament took place at St. Mary's Visitation today. Teams were divided into two eight-team divisions, the Neil Armstrong division and the Buzz Aldrin division. At the conclusion of round-robin play, these were the teams' records:

Neil Armstrong:
1. Quest Red (7-0)
2. Bayside B (6-1)
3. Station B (5-2)
4. Station C (4-3)
5. Keith Blue (2-5)
6. SMV Mango (2-5)
7. SMV Apple (1-6)
8. Bayside C (1-6)

Buzz Aldrin:
1. Station A (7-0)
2t. Quest Black (5-2)
2t. SMV Avocado (5-2)
4. Keith Red (4-3)
5. Bayside A (3-4)
6. SMV Grape (2-5)
7. SMV Orange (1-6)
8. Station D (1-6)

The top two teams in each division played in the Leonardo bracket; the next two in the Michelangelo bracket; the next two in the Donatello bracket; and the last two in the Raphael bracket. The only tie to be broken at the buzzer was for the last spot in the top bracket; Quest Black defeated SMV Avocado in a half-game for that spot.

Each team had already played one team in their bracket; that game carried over into their bracket record. At the conclusion of the brackets, we had a tie:

Leonardo Bracket
1t. Quest Red (2-1 in bracket; 8-1 overall)
1t. Station A (2-1 in bracket; 8-1 overall)
3. Bayside B (1-2 in bracket; 7-2 overall)
4. Quest Black (1-2 in bracket; 6-3 overall)

Michelangelo Bracket
5. Station B (3-0 in bracket; 7-2 overall)
6. Station C (2-1 in bracket; 6-3 overall)
7. SMV Avocado (1-2 in bracket; 5-4 overall)
8. Keith Red (0-3 in bracket; 4-5 overall)

Donatello Bracket
9. SMV Mango (3-0 in bracket; 4-5 overall)
10. Keith Blue (2-1 in bracket; 4-5 overall)
11. Bayside A (1-2 in bracket; 3-6 overall)
12. SMV Grape (0-3 in bracket; 2-7 overall)

Raphael Bracket
13. Station D (3-0 in bracket; 3-6 overall)
14. SMV Apple (2-1 in bracket; 2-7 overall)
15. SMV Orange (1-2 in bracket; 2-7 overall)
16. Bayside C (0-3 in bracket; 1-8 overall)

Station A took a 10 point loss to Bayside B in the first playoff round, but then took a 395-350 win over Quest Red to force a tiebreaker game, since both teams were 2-1 in their bracket and 8-1 overall. Quest Red won the tiebreaker, 415-325, to take first place. Bayside B secured third place and Quest Black took fourth.

The leading individual scorers, averaged over the seven preliminary rounds, were these players. This is slightly different from the (apparently incomplete) stats I used to award prizes at the tournament.
1. Vikas Reddy, Quest Red, 104 ppg
2. Ben Kramer, Bayside B, 85 ppg
3. Cooper Roh, Keith Red, 65 ppg
4. Abraham Holterman, Station A, 58 ppg
5. Nicholas Huang, Station A, 58 ppg
6. Nick Zehner, Quest Black, 53 ppg
7. Alex Lindenbaum, Bayside A, 52 ppg
8. Arjun Asija, Station B, 51 ppg
9. Colin Lehmann, Station B, 49 ppg
10. Keegan Mihm, SMV Mango, 45 ppg

Overall I felt like the tournament was fun, ran smoothly, and was a good experience for quiz bowlers of all levels. I am grateful to Mrs. Groh, Mr. Price, Mrs. Lockhart, and Mrs. Burns for bringing their teams to compete. I also would like to thank my moderators and scorekeepers: Kylie Daemmrich, Nora Berens, Tim Carrig, John Eberle, Paul Grum, Don Parey, James Kearney, William Steinhafel, Peter Chmiel, Nicholas Ragonese, Allen Witkowski, another Allen Witkowski, Lex Witkowski, Burke Seeberg, William Puchner, and Ian Bro. I am also grateful to my young statistical prodigies, Kevin Eberle and Aidan Parks, who assisted our statistical expert Beth Parey. Special thanks go to my co-coaches, Kylie Daemmrich and Burke Seeberg, for being supportive, hard-working, and kind.

We hope to see you on March 29, 2015 for the fifth annual Gladiator Open!
