Detroit Country Day MS Tournament (MS-12), 1/24/15

Post by bmcnellen »

It is my pleasure to announce formally the third annual Detroit Country Day School Middle School Quiz Bowl Tournament, to be held on Saturday, January 24, 2015. This will be a NAQT untimed event, with 20 tossup/bonus sets per game, using packet MS-12; the top 15% of teams in attendance will qualify for NAQT middle school nationals in Dallas on May 8-10, 2015.

The tournament will be held at the Detroit Country Day School Upper School campus in Beverly Hills, MI. As of now, there is no cap on the field size, and the exact format of prelim and playoff rounds will be determined once the number of teams is finalized.

The fee schedule will be as follows:

$40 for the first team from a school
$20 for the second team from a school
NO CHARGE for each team beyond the second from a school
-$10 per working buzzer system that a school brings
-$20/school distance discount for travelling over 100 miles one way as per Google Maps

To register, please email me ([email protected]) with the amount of teams/buzzers that you will be bringing.

You may pay by cash or check on your arrival at the tournament. Please make checks payable to:

Detroit Country Day School Quiz Bowl
22305 West 13 Mile Road

Due to a few drops, we ultimately ran a tournament of 20 teams. We played 20-question untimed rounds, with no overtimes. The morning session consisted of four 5-team divisions, with 5 games of round-robin play (4 divisional games plus a crossover). The entire field was reseeded into groups of six, six, and eight for the afternoon based on overall record (Championship Division, Division One, and Division Two respectively). The afternoon then consisted of another five-game round-robin within each division (with some Division Two teams not playing each other).

The top three in the Championship Division earning the MSNCT qualifying bids were:

1st Detroit Country Day A
2nd All Saints Academy (Grand Rapids)
3rd St. Michael B

The remaining three in the Championship Division were:

4th Smith A
5th St. Michael A
6th Triumph Academy A

The Division One and Division Two winners were St. Michael C and St. Michael D respectively.

Full stats have been submitted to NAQT, and should be posted soon.
