Gladiator Open, 4-9-16 [MS-18; Elm Grove, WI]

Post by MichaelFalk »

Dear coaches, players, and community members:

St. Mary's Visitation Catholic Parish School hereby invites you to our sixth annual Gladiator Open, to be held on Saturday, April 9, 2016, in bustling downtown Elm Grove, WI. This is an open junior high (up to grade 8) quiz bowl tournament to be played on NAQT's MS-18 question set. Though it is late in the season, it is still an MSNCT qualifier.

Teams should expect about 8 rounds of pyramidal tossups and three-part bonuses played according to NAQT rules (with the exception that rounds will be untimed and consist of two ten-tossup halves with bonuses). This means that teams will be allowed four players at a time (plus substitutes), bonuses will not bounce back, early buzzes ("powers") will be worth 15 points, and interrupts ("negs") will incur a 5 point penalty.

We are keeping our entry fee at $65 per team, with a $5 discount for each buzzer system you bring and a $10 discount for your 2nd and subsequent team. If you want to bring a moderator, please contact me for details.

Please arrive between 8:15 and 8:30 AM. A brief rules meeting will take place at 8:30, and the first game will begin at 8:45. We will take an hour-long break for lunch around 11:30 AM, during which you can go out to one of our neighborhood restaurants or bring your own lunch and eat in our cafeteria.

Despite the I-41 construction, SMV is easy to reach. We are located 15 minutes from downtown Milwaukee and 90 minutes from the Chicago Loop. To reserve a spot (or spots), please email at mfalk at stmaryeg dot org. We hope to see you in Elm Grove in April!

Hi everyone,

We had a great day at Gladiator Open today. Station A ran the table, finishing 9-0 and adding another trophy to their case. Runners up were Keith A, in second place at 7-2 overall.

Sajak Division:
1: Station A (7-0)
2: Station C (6-1)
3: SMV A (5-2)
4: Fall River (3-4; 251.4 PPG)
5: Holy Cross A (3-4; 170.7 PPG)
6: Quest B (2-5; 241.4 PPG)
7: Keith B (2-5; 167.9 PPG)
8: SMV D (0-7)

Trebek Division:
1: Station B (6-1; 507.9 PPG)
2: Keith A (6-1; 413.6 PPG)
3: Quest A (5-2; 461.4 PPG)
4: SMV B (5-2; 332.1 PPG)
5: SMV C (3-4)
6: Station D (2-5)
7: Holy Cross B (1-6)
8: St. Edward (0-7)

For playoffs, the top two teams in each division played in the Parentheses bracket for the tournament championship. They played the team from the opposite division, and the game against the team from their division carried over into the playoff record. Teams 3-4 in each division played in the Exponents bracket, teams 5-6 played in the Multiplication/Division bracket, and teams 7-8 played in the Addition/Subtraction bracket.

There were no ties for top bracket placement, for tournament championship, or for third place; by tournament rules, these would have been played off at the buzzer. Other ties were broken by PPG.

In order of tournament finish:
Parentheses bracket:
1. Station A, 3-0
2. Keith A, 2-1
3. Station C, 1-2
4. Station B, 0-3

Exponents bracket:
5. Quest A, 2-1 and 445 PPG in those games
6. SMV B, 2-1 and 305 PPG in those games
7. Fall River, 1-2 and 230 PPG in those games
8. SMV A, 1-2 and 175 PPG in those games

Multiplication/Division bracket:
9. SMV C, 3-0
10. Holy Cross A, 2-1
11. Quest B, 1-2
12. Station D, 0-3

Addition/Subtraction bracket:
13. Keith B, 3-0
14. St. Edward, 1-2 and 178.3 PPG in those games
15. SMV D, 1-2 and 165 PPG in those games
16. Holy Cross B, 1-2 and 123.3 PPG in those games

As we had a packet left over, we had the 10 top scorers from the preliminary play a 20-tossup individual shootout for prizes. The scores from the shootout were:
1st: Joshua, Fall River, 55 pts
2nd: Cooper R., Keith, 45 pts
3rd: Andy, Station, 35 pts
4th: Abraham, Station, 25 pts
5th: Tim R., SMV, 15 pts
6th(t): Liam, Station, 10 pts
6th(t): Keegan, SMV, 10 pts
8th: Arjun, Station, 5 pts
9th: David, Station, 0 pts
10th: Nikita, Quest, -15 pts

My thanks to:
Moderators and scorekeepers: Allen Witkowski, Lex Witkowski, Aidan Parks, James Kearney, Donald Parey, Mike Rifelj, Brock Calamari, Kyle Asta, Peter Chmiel, and Tim Carrig
Statistician and control room coordinator: Beth Parey
My co-coaches: Kylie Daemmrich and Burke Seeberg
The players, coaches, parents, and teachers who made today possible.

Thank you! We hope to see you at Gladiator Fall 2016.
