Updating ProtoBowl

Post by ndikkala »

If you, like me, use ProtoBowl a lot, you might have noticed that many of the questions are now several years out of date. Most of the questions are 2011 and earlier, which is fine for history or lit questions, but when it comes to modern science, geography, or current events/politics, this information is badly out of date. Take for instance, Australia's PM. In 2013 alone there were three different Prime Ministers of Australia! This gets extremely confusing in ProtoBowl because you have to remember the wrong information to get the question right. So what I'm getting to is, we need to update ProtoBowl with newer sets from http://quizbowlpackets.com/. Sets like 2013 BISB, JAMES, BHSAT, PACE NSC, and IMSANITY come to mind as some high-level question sets that have been released. There's a GitHub page here for adding packets https://github.com/neotenic/packets but I don't have too much experience with the site so I was hoping this could be a community effort to update the databases.

Would people use Quinterest more if it included a "reader"-like capability? If so, I'll happily solicit other quizbowl coders to (help) work on/make such a thing.

Couldn't the Proto-programmers include a "Dated Question" under their Edit feature along with "Broken Question", "Wrong Category", etc.?

I guess they could do that but I'm trying to see if there is anyone in the QB Community with the coding skills to add new sets onto the repository.

That would require protobowl to be a constantly updated and fixed resource.

People should use Quinterest- it is more up to-date.
