BLASTOISE @ Lisgar (26 March 2011)
This an announcement for the Bell-Lisgar Academic & Sexy Trash Open Inside the South-East (of Ontario), aka BLASTOISE being played at the Lisgar campus on 26 March 2011. Before anyone asks, YES there will be at least a Pokémon pack of 20 tossups produced by the editors, but that's not the entirety of this tournament.

FORMAT AND DIFFICULTY
This will continue the legacy of the Ottawa Hybrid Tournaments, in that it will be a packet-submission tournament open to high school (hopefully helping spread quizbowl in Ontario against the spectre of Reach for the Top) and university teams. This tournament should be around the ACF-Fall, HSNCT level. It will have powers. The number of rounds will be determined by the number of packets submitted+2 editor rounds. This will be edited by myself, Lisgar teammates (Jj, Joe), as well as Nick from Bell High School, which hosted BOKCHOI in November. Submitted packets will be edited down to 20/20+TBs.

REGISTRATION AND CONTACT
You can e-mail me with any questions at patarDOTknightDOTwikiATgmailDOTcom.

PRICING AND PACKET DEADLINES (see https://docs.google.com/document/d/1m3O ... y=CN2g3aMJ)
Base fee is: $100 CAD
Each subsequent team: -$10 from base fee (e.g. 3 teams=$100+$90+$80=$270)
Fully functioning buzzer system: -$10
Minimum fee: $0
Packet penalties/discounts: See Google Document link (these are to encourage good writing in the Ontario/Ottawa circuit, and generally follow ACF guidelines, but more lenient) (see: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1yZo ... y=CJa2n6IF)

Submission discounts (send to e-mails mentioned in Google Doc link)
-$75 done on 31 December
-$60 done on 14 January
-$50 done on 28 January
-$35 done on 17 February
-$25 done on 4 March

After March 4, please contact the editors to negotiate a discount, which shall not exceed $20, depending on timing/quality.

Please tell me that this is a novelty packet for before or after the tournament, and not something that will decide games...

Depending on how desperate you are for teams (and packets), I will likely be available that day for playing, but I am not a student anymore. I can play solo, if that would make things fairer (but I would also understand if you want to restrict it to actual students).

Yeah it's a novelty packet.

Right now I think around 8 packets are either done or the process of being written. If you want to play, go for it, and write a packet. It's "open" for a reason.

This has already been posted on the FB event, but the University of Waterloo is interested in mirroring this tournament on the same day as the main event (19 March).

Thread for the Waterloo mirror: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=11214
We will most likely be hosting it on the 12th instead, due to a conflict with MUT.

The University of Delaware is interested in mirroring this tournament sometime in April. Give us a week or two to hash out the specifics.

I'll probably look out-of-place playing against HS teams, but I will be playing and will have a packet (independent of whatever Ottawa is doing). I can personally provide one buzzer set.

Due to the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, this tournament is no longer happening on the 19th at Ottawa. We are hoping that the 26th will work. This will not prevent the set being done for the UWaterloo mirror on the 12th. The submission deadlines will be bumped suitably.

We would be open to this happening.

That's fine, and buzzers would be great.

Yes, earlier would be safer, but we 're scheduled to start just after 9. And preferably with buzzers.

Round Robin Results: http://results.scobo.net/Lisgar/BLASTOISE

Round Robin+Finals Results: http://results.scobo.net/Lisgar/BLASTOISEF

Due to time-constraints on cleaning staff at the site, the finals was cut down to a one-game, winner-takes all between the top two teams. So although Ottawa A was ahead going into that game, it lost to Jordan's team in that one-game final.

Thanks to everyone who came out, and remember not to discuss the question answers until all mirrors are done. However feel free to comment on other aspects of the tournament here.

You might also want to inquire with Matt Groth. For our mirror at Delaware, he edited the set to replace Canadian-specific questions with American ones, and added a twelfth packet in the process.
