SOLO: A Star Wars Tournament

Post by samus149 »

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…

This is the announcement for Sean’s Opulent Lucasian Open, or SOLO, a Star Wars tournament written by, you guessed it, me. I’m hoping to finish 10 packets of 20 tossups each, with the following distribution:

2 Movies (Roughly 1/3 Prequels, 1/3 Originals, 1/3 Both)
1 TV Shows
1 Video Games
1 Machinery/Ships
1 Species/Biology
1 Planets/Geography
1 Ancient History (-infinity to 1000 years Before the Battle of Yavin [BBY])
1 Rise of the Empire (1000 BBY to 19 BBY)
1 Imperial (19 BBY to 0 BBY)
1 Rebellion (0 BBY to 4 ABY)
1 New Republic (4 ABY to 25 ABY)
1 New Jedi Order/Legacy (25 ABY to infinity)
2 Common Links
1 Pop Culture/Trash
4 Miscellaneous
*Ties can be broken either by a physical challenge or the roll of an n-sided die.

The vast majority of clues within a certain distribution (>95%) will only be drawn from sources within that distribution. For example, questions on things from the movies will, for the most part, only use things that appear in the movies. The miscellaneous section is for anything that spans time periods or things I feel don’t really fit anywhere else.

Tossups will be 7-8 lines Times New Roman during writing (including bolding for powers), then changed to a font that looks better.

Difficult is obviously hard to quantify, but I guess this will be...pretty hard. The Expanded Universe is still entirely valid for this tournament, and questions will be drawn from all corners of the universe. Probably not a tournament for the casual Star Wars fan.

There will be both powers and superpowers.

The cost for playing this set will be PWYW. Think it's worth $10? Pay $10. Think it's worth nothing? Hopefully it won't be, but that's fine. Forgot your wallet? That's fine too. I'm just writing this for the hell of it, but I certainly wouldn't mind getting paid for my efforts.

I have no idea when would be a good idea to read this, but the set should be done by the time ICT rolls around, and I guess I’ll just gauge interest with this thread. Any questions? Ask 'em! Until then, may the Force be with you.

Is this set written for teams or will people be playing this SOLO?

Does trash/pop culture refer to things outside the SW universe that refer to the SW universe (like Robot Chicken or Spaceballs)?

And lastly, will you translate this set to common non-Galactic Basic sentient languages like Shyriiwook, Huttese, and Twi'leki? Failing that, could you provide an appropriately hyperpolyglot protocol droid to moderate?

This is designed more as a SOLO event than a teams event, yes.

Yes, though not exclusively.

While Huttese and Shyriiwook should be no problem, you forget that Twi'leki involves movement of the lekku, proboscises no quizbowlers currently possess to my knowledge, so reading the questions would be impossible.

No. Hope not. Do...or do not. There is no "hope".
Seriously though, this sounds amazing and you can consider me very interested!

Is there any word on the progress of this set? I would be very interested in playing this if it were at HSNCT.

This set is currently 33.5% done, but most of that was done in the last few weeks after I took a sabbatical to watch all 6 seasons of the Clone Wars cartoon. I'm reasonably confident I can get it done before the two high school nationals, but I'm not sure which one, if any, I'll be attending.

Status report: this set is halfway done, and has been that way since I had to stop working on it in March, but I'm gonna keep on writing this and have it ready for play sometime next year (next ICT, if possible).

It was as though millions of quizbowl-playing voices cried out in terror, and then were suddenly silenced...
