The 10-Point Shootout (NBA Vanity Tournament)
The 10-Point Shootout (NBA Vanity Tournament)
Hello, everybody. Since I've already sort of announced this in the "The Second Summer Open" thread, here's a more official announcement for a tournament I've been pushing towards for a while now: The 10-Point Shootout. This will be a tournament focusing, more or less, on professional basketball in the form of the NBA. The goal is for it to be completed by the beginning of August, as I start to have free time in the next couple weeks.
The tournament as planned will consist of six packets of 20/0 tossups and and an additional 5/0 tiebreakers. The distribution will roughly fit the following:
Contemporary NBA (2010-Present): 15/0
Modern NBA (1990-2010): 28/0
Classic NBA: (1970-1990): 28/0
Pioneers: (Naismith-1970): 12/0
Journalism: 5/0
Basketball Miscellany: 25/0
Pop Culture: 12/0
Most of the answerlines are set. If someone really wants to help out, I'd be fine with that. The planned cost is $5 per person to supply my beer fund. That is all.

I neglected to bring the score sheets home with me. I believe Tejas and Joe Nutter massacred everyone at our site, and I think Andrew Hart/me took second.

Re: The 10-Point Shootout (NBA Vanity Tournament)
According to Will, the stats were lost to the sands of time.
I went through the packets and did our stats. We were 4-1 with an average of 97 ppg. I was 11-19-11 for 56 ppg; Mike was 9-8-2 for 41 ppg. Maybe some other folks could do the same for their teams so we could get a somewhat more fulsome picture of the scoring at the event.

Re: The 10-Point Shootout (NBA Vanity Tournament)
I had my line as 9/8/2, but I might have just been misremembering where I buzzed on something.
The teams were:
Tejas/Joe: easily the winners, 5-0
Andrew/me: 4-1
Dylan/Rob: 2-3
The other teams were Ryan/Chris/Calvin, Morgan/Harris/Eliza, and Sid/Kenji. I think Chris' team went 3-2, Morgan's team went 1-4, and Sid's team with 0-5.
Tejas would have been the top scorer by a large margin, and I'm sorry I lost the scoresheet showing Tejas' merciless beatdown of Chris Ray's team in Round 4, a massacre that MIchael Jordan would have noted is probably going too far (not that Tejas didn't beat down all the other teams too, but this one was especially brutal).

Btw, I think it was Morgan's team that went 3-2, but I'm not entirely sure.

Oh you're probably right, but I'll wait for some confirmation. I think I mixed up who beat who there.

Re: The 10-Point Shootout (NBA Vanity Tournament)
This was hella fun, thanks Mik!
At the NYC site, we played all six packets shootout-style. I kept score as best I could and the following statistics were compiled which are probably mostly accurate.
Player - 15/10/5 - total points
Yi - 2/8/8 - 70
Richard - 2/7/4 - 80
York - 6/9/1 - 185
Jerry - 16/18/14 - 350
Jeff - 0/6/5 - 35
Jason - 10/16/10 - 260

We did. We lost to Andrew/Mike and Tejas/Joe.theMoMA wrote:Btw, I think it was Morgan's team that went 3-2, but I'm not entirely sure.
I really enjoyed this set overall and I thought it brought up a bunch of topics that are not often asked about. My only gripe is how some answerlines were really "demanding" in the sense that you needed to be able to pull a lot of information at game speed which was hard.
All-in-all, I thought this set was excellent and it would be amazing if there was another NBA side event in the future.

will this set be posted soon or are there any other mirrors planned? otherwise I'm sure there's plenty of people like me who couldn't make a mirror who'd be interested in hearing them on irc

There are potential instantiations of this tournament at side-event tournaments over the next two weekends, I believe. After that I have no problem with reading the packets on the IRC.

I read the the game Tejas went off. He went 13-2-2. Joe Nutter went 2-0-0. Tejas and Joe Nutter powered every tossup in the second half over Chris Ray.

Mik read us about three rounds of this over Phil's BBQ after the Side Events at UCSD. I don't have any stats, but let it be known that 1) the questions were super fun and a great addition to delicious barbecue (100% true) and 2) I absolutely murdered Justin Nghiem (significantly less true).

I am disappointed. I lived in San Diego this summer and I like quiz bowl, BBQ, and basketball. Unless I'm mistaken, no UCSD activities pertaining to Side Event Weekend were ever announced on the forums beforehand, otherwise I would have participated.Jason Cheng wrote:Mik read us about three rounds of this over Phil's BBQ after the Side Events at UCSD. Re: The 10-Point Shootout (NBA Vanity Tournament)
Sorry, that's my bad. The idea to even hold the side events at UCSD only germinated a week ago, and was informal to the point where it completely slipped my mind to advertise this on the forums, as I didn't expect many people to actually be available or in the area for this event besides the members of our club, some high school players, and maybe like three alumni (as the Listory and ARTSEE stats I've uploaded suggest).mhayes wrote:I am disappointed. No worries. I didn't mean to come across so grumpy in my post. It's just something to keep in mind, especially for a city like San Diego with a large number of transient residents.

The packet set (with some minor edits) has been uploaded to the database, along with developer commentary that I added after pretty much every question. I'm willing to say this tournament is now clear. If there's anything about it you'd like to discuss, you may do so here.
