Eternal Sonata (video game music)

Post by anderson »

This is the announcement thread for Eternal Sonata, an audio tournament on video games written by Anderson Wang (formerly of MIT) and Jasper Lee (University of Tennessee). We're going to try to finish at least 5 packets of 20 tossups each in time for Side Event Weekend, but if that doesn't happen it'll be open for mirrors for the 2016-17 school year. Right now, we are over 80% completion.

Format:
Like Imaginary Landscape, tossups will average slightly longer than 1 minute in length and consist of ~6-7 clips arranged pyramidally.

Distribution:
3.5 Arcade/8-bit/16-bit eras
2 32/64-bit eras
3.5 2000's (6th gen-7th gen up to 2009)
3.5 2010's
6.5 Common Link/Miscellaneous
1 Other/Video Game Related Content

This distribution is subject to change as we finish writing; our main goal is to have a good overall balance and we don’t care too much about having specific numbers of specific topics.

Like with the traditional-format tournament The Secret Island of Dr. Auroni, we're going to do our best to cover a wide breadth of different genres, consoles, and time periods. And don’t worry, despite the name, JRPGs will most definitely comprise less than 10% of the set :P

Difficulty:
We are planning to make most of the tossups accessible to most people by the end, but there will be some harder answerlines here and there. Similar to Imaginary Landscape’s difficulty quotas, we are aiming for a distribution of about 3/8 “easy”, 1/2 “medium”, and 1/8 “hard”. Again, we don’t really care too much for specific numbers here, we mainly care about making the whole thing feel accessible.

Fees: None!

If you would like to mirror this set or have any questions, post here or email us at jlee175 at utk.edu and anderson.wang1994 at gmail.

Edit: We changed the distribution slightly (moved some some weight from 32/64-bit eras to common link) and updated the completion percentage.

If there isn't a toss-up on Real Cool Radical Rex's intro music, I'll be slightly disappointed.

Assuming this runs on Side Event Weekend, will there potentially be a Skype mirror for those of us who are unable to make it out to one of the physical locations?

I don't know if Anderson can, but I don't know how to make a Skype mirror work from my end, unfortunately.

Technically, don't I need to play this for you to beat me at it?

I've tested questions with friends over Google Hangouts before*, so I'd be up for hosting a Skype or Hangouts mirror later this summer.

*More specifically, on my mac, I used a combination of Soundflower and LineIn to route the audio. I imagine there's a similar thing one can do on Windows in case the online mirror needs more than 1 moderator.

We've playtested Imaginary Landscape using Google Hangouts and Skype before, and both are fine. In my experience, Skype produces better audio quality (I'm using Ubuntu and just routing the audio through whatever stereo mix is called in Linux).

Don't worry guys, I'd very much like to help run a Skype mirror (seeing as I won't be attending any physical sites), so I'll do my best to work these things out by the playtesting stage.

I get the need for a Skype tournament, but just to make it clear, I would rather not play a Skype tournament of this -- I think bandwidth transition rates, quality, just get too sacrificed for an audio tournament. I guess what I'm saying is, please mirror this physically as well before the Skype tournament.

I'm playing this at Michigan. Now's your chance to grab me as a teammate, assuming it gets run as at least doubles there.

This set is finished and packetized  , and will soon be e-mailed out to all mirrors (currently just Michigan, but if anyone else also wants to mirror this send us an e-mail).

The final distribution was:
3.5 Arcade/8-bit/16-bit eras
2 32/64-bit eras
3.5 2000's (6th gen-7th gen up to 2009)
3.5 2010's
5.5 Common Link/Miscellaneous
1 Composer
1 "Trash"

Finally, the skype mirror will be happening! I will tentatively schedule it for the 8/20-8/21 weekend, but if anyone wants to play and has strong date preferences, let us know soon. This does mean that people who will play the set this weekend should probably refrain from discussing question content on the forums until the skype mirror happens (just to be safe...).

Lovely tournament. Our site had a ton of fun playing this, and everyone had some impressive buzzes. The questions were pretty well constructed for an audio tournament and some fantastic clues were picked.
