Sic Semper Trashis at (Bristol) Virginia HS, March 25th

Post by ShorterPearson »

This is the formal announcement and a declaration of open registration for the Southwest Virginia Academic Team Alliance (SWATA) trash tournament, Sic Semper Trashis, to be held at Virginia High School in Bristol, Virginia on March 25th, 2017.

This tournament will be a mirror of Bob Kilner's Ohio Trash set, and will serve as a postseason funfest and celebration, open to all teams from Southwest Virginia, and as a specific reward to the teams that made this year's SWATA NAQT circuit so successful.

It will serve additionally as a fundraiser for teams from the SWATA tournaments that qualified for national competitions in Spring 2017, and as such, is be open to all comers. An open and a high school champion will be crowned; should there be sufficient interest on both groups, the tournament may run with both high school and open divisions.

LOGISTICS
Early game plan is to open registration at 830 AM and hold general meeting between 900-915 AM to target a first game to start at 930 AM. We will promise all teams 8 games, and we'll see how registration goes before we start planning out a schedule.

In addition, at lunch, a preliminary round for a popular music identification game will be held, as "authored" by SWATA stalwart/Virginia High alum Alex Tabor. Prior to awards, we'll take the top ten from the preliminary round and play a shootout for everybody. (After awards, rumor has it that the tournament director will want to take on all-stars at the buzzer; if you feel like you have a chance to be a top scorer, don't take off too soon.)

There are no trophies. There will be prizes. Prizes will be (a) cheap and (b) trashy.

FEES
All fees can be somewhat negotiated. However, keep these two principles in mind:
(1) Particularly from the SWATA high schools, we want players who want to play to be able to play, and we don't want money to stand in your way.
(2) We do want to raise funds with this. If you're able to pay full freight, pay full freight. If you're able to toss a few extra bills in the bin, they're going straight to Southwest Virginia high school teams playing nationals.

With that in mind, here are the proposed fees:

HIGH SCHOOL TEAMS
$50 for first team from a high school
$45 for each additional team from same high school
$15 per free agent from a Virginia high school
-$10 discount *per school* (not per team) for any Virginia high school that played a SWATA Saturday tournament (Redbud at Honaker, LMIT at Gate City, Tornado at Richlands, or Bulldog at Tazewell) this season

OPEN TEAMS (yes, you're welcome if you're not a high school player!)
$80 per team of four (flat)
$25 per open free agent

Discounts:
$10 per high school or open team for staff supplied (or dinner for that staffer in Bristol post-tournament; pick one)
$5 per high school or open team for buzzers supplied

Open team minimum $60; no HS team minimum

CONTACT
Your tournament director is Chuck Pearson, as assisted by Alex Tabor and other denizens of the SWATA universe. Contact Pearson though Facebook (http://facebook.com/chuck.pearson) or by email at [email protected] (using personal email for this tournament, not the work email).

Your hosts are the Scholastic Bowl team at Virginia High School, coached by Carol Propst and Noah Ashbrook ([email protected] and [email protected], respectively..."nashbrook" is the most elegant email handle). Concessions over lunch will be available on-site, to support Virginia High School programs.

DISCLAIMER
All decisions of the tournament director are arbitrary, capricious, and final.

Further updates as events warrant.

this is seriously happening

FIELD UPDATE THE THIRD

HIGH SCHOOLS CONFIRMED
Virginia
Richlands A
Richlands B
Tazewell
Lee

CONFIRMED TEAMS IN A QUANTUM STATE BETWEEN "HIGH SCHOOL" AND "OPEN"
Helton/Starnes et al. (Gate City)
Shortt/Hubbard (Honaker)

OPEN TEAMS CONFIRMED
Rollins/Washick et al. (somewhere between Chattanooga and Kingsport)
Perkins/Herndon et al. (Honaker)
McAvoy et al. (Tazewell)
Chewning et al. (Virginia Tech/Blacksburg)
Cook/Perkins et al. (Honaker)
Hale & Friends (Richlands)
Adams/Snead et al. (Lebanon)

This is no longer based on preliminary expressions of interest, but on actual registrations in hand. If you have expressed interest, make sure you actually fill out the registration form soonest so I know you're on your way.

Reminder that trashy names for teams (and even trashy aliases) will not be required, but will be strongly encouraged. For example, my favorite all-time trash team name was Gilbert Gottfried Voice Lessons, in which me and my mates played as We Sell Records, Shoedini, Santa Claus, and the AFLAC Duck. Sufficient trashy knowledge should make all names self-explanatory.

Further news as events warrant.

SIDE EVENTS!

- For the super-trashy minded, Alex Tabor (your assistant TD, Virginia High alum, another SWVA quizbowl stalwart) is taking it on itself to organize a classic music game - preliminary round over lunch, song shootout among ten qualifiers immediately following the afternoon rounds. He's calling it the Jeremy Alexander Tabor Memorial Music Quiz. I have already made the obvious crack that he's pretty fearful of how well this will go if he's calling this a "memorial" - but music games are always super fun.

- For the more academically minded among the players (and staff), Dylan Cox (current Gate City player that we're welcoming to the tournament staff on the day) will be running a mythology/religion shootout over the lunch break.

- The tournament director may, at his sole discretion, engage in guerrilla foolishness over the day for some really cheap and really trashy trinkets. Bwahahahahahahaha.

Bump. Field Update The Third is up there. If you're not confirmed in Field Update The Third, I haven't received a registration from you yet; check your email or go to the team registration form.

Gah, this is happening Saturday.
