"Let's Remember Some Guys"
"Let's Remember Some Guys"
Tejas, Naveed, Rob, and I have an idea for a guerrilla sports event called "Let's Remember Some Guys." The idea parallels the intermittent Deadspin series "Let's Remember Some Guys."
What is a "guy"?
Each tossup will be on a single athlete. The key is that the athletes must be in the vein of Deadspin's "guys": somewhat memorable, but not particularly dominant or otherwise notable. The main criterion is whether, after hearing the tossup, the players will go "oh, yeah, I remember that guy." (It might help to pick guys you actually remember.) Anyone too obscure for that isn't a guy. Anyone whose existence you don't need to be reminded of isn't a guy. Some examples of guys: Rick Ankiel, Smush Parker, Jason Campbell, and Anthony Kim. Examples of not guys: Derek Jeter, Kobe Bryant, Tom Brady, and Roger Federer.
When did "guys" play?
Because we're actually trying to remember guys, try not to pick players whose careers ended before 1998 or so, or players whose careers are still in progress, although there is some leeway here. If you want to include some historical guys in your "other" category, that's fine, but the main MLB/NBA/NFL tossups should be on guys who retired sometime between 1998 and 2017 (or who are functionally retired).
How should tossups look?
The tossups should be no shorter than 4.5 lines and no longer than 6 (1" margins, 10-point Times New Roman). Clues should focus on memorable career events or off-the-field incidents. Particularly helpful clues--for instance, clues about interactions with teammates, trades, etc.--will provide useful context about the teams a player was on or the years in which they played. Try to keep the clues interesting and not almanacky.
What's the distribution?
3 MLB
3 NBA
3 NFL
3 "other" (NHL, college sports, tennis, golf, soccer, Olympics, WNBA, historical guys, etc.)
Note that some of your guys can, in fact, be ladies.
When should I be done with my many excellent packets?
We will get together to try to remember all these guys at HSNCT/PACE in 2018.

Re: "Let's Remember Some Guys"
fantastic
I'd like to humbly request that we re-evaluate the timeline of guys, because lots of guys retired earlier in the 90s. I think Craig Hodges, Harold Miner, Bud Black and Dave Righetti are all quality guys that are capable of being remembered.theMoMA wrote:Tejas, Naveed, Rob, and I have an idea for a guerrilla sports event called "Let's Remember Some Guys." If anyone needs help remembering MLB players from this era, I am linking to Frank Thomas's Hall of Fame Acceptance Speech. Scroll to the bottom and he gives a "verbal montage" of seemingly every middling player he was ever teammates with

If you can fit it into the theme of guy remembering, it's probably fine, although I'm not exactly sure how that would work with a descriptive answer.Cheynem wrote:Are descriptive answers acceptable?

I might contribute a packet depending on how much time I can contribute to this. (Great idea by the way; always found the "guys" who just were there ready to contribute to be underrated in the scheme of things)

I would say avoid answer lines that aren't specifically named "guys" unless you have a very inspired and on-theme answer that somehow bucks that trend.Cheynem wrote:I remember the guy, but not his name.

I'll also try to put together a "description acceptable" packet where the answer lines aren't players but individual plays or games where something notable or interesting happened. Stuff like "the play" having the answer line "the football game between Stanford and cal that ended with the band on the field"Cheynem wrote:Are descriptive answers acceptable?

This sounds fantastic. I am also interested in a Canadian mirror, and will certainly contribute a pack (which will likely be longer than 12 questions so that it includes more non-Big Four sports).

Yes, they're meant to be 12 questions long, so people can contribute without writing an overwhelming number of tossups. You're free to write a double feature if you'd like, however. The Ununtiable Twine wrote:Are these packets meant to be 12 questions long? I would ask that people stick to the distribution (or multiples of the distribution, if you want to write more); it'll be less fun to read if people go too wild writing on particular sports.

I said in the original post that packets should be ready for the second summer open slot, whether that's an actual open or a side event weekend. If there's both a second summer open and a side event weekend, it should probably slot into the latter.

Hey guys, there are a lot of tournaments planned for this summer, and I think it makes sense to defer to those guys. Let's plan to remember some guys at HSNCT and NSC this coming year. I'll make a post later telling you guys how to submit packets. In the meantime, keep thinking of guys and writing short tossups on them. Thanks, guys.

Hey guys,
I just got a PM asking if this is still on for HSNCT/PACE. The answer is "yes." Please get your packets to me by May 25 ([email protected]). I will put them all in a zip file and distribute to whoever's running the event at PACE (if anyone). The cost at both sites will be free.
At HSNCT, I'm hoping to run this as a shootout in one or two rooms. If you're interested in moderating, let me know. (I assume people will read their own packets, but it'd be nice to have people lined up to read any extras.)

Let's plan to play this event on Saturday night after the Pokemon and audio tournaments conclude. Based on my informal survey of people who have expressed interest in writing, I'm guessing that we'll have at least 7 packets and probably no more than 10, so people should plan on this taking about a half hour to 45 minutes.
I will update this thread with information on rooms and start times before Saturday night. If you want an email from me about logistics, please fill out that google form, otherwise just check this thread on Saturday.

Meet in M105 after Pokemon/Soundtrack (should be around 10:30, I think). There are going to be at least a dozen packets (of ~12 tossups each), so there will be guys aplenty to remember, but it still shouldn't take that long.

Apparently the Pokemon event is going to take a couple hours, so I think we need to start reading Guys before it ends. If you're interested in remembering guys, meet in M105 at 11:30. We'll split into two rooms if necessary.
If you're playing the Pokemon set (or if Soundtrack hasn't ended yet by 11:30 and you're still playing that) and want me to keep you updated, send me an email at [email protected].

Re: "Let's Remember Some Guys"
Guys were remembered (except for Luke Scott).
By PPG (points per guy), the scorers were ranked:
Tejas Raje: 2.61
Andrew Hart: 1.47
Naveed Chowdhury: 1.41
Mike Cheyne: 1.30
Cory Haala: 1.05
Alex Sankaran: 1.03
Ryan Rosenberg: 0.94
Chris Manners: 0.77
Robert Chu: 0.56
Jake Sundberg: 0.33
Rohin Devanathan: 0.32
Neil Vinjamuri: 0.24
Carsten Gehring: 0.18
Ankit Aggarwal: 0.09
Tejas remembered a commanding 35 of 138 guys, a figure reflecting but a faint shadow of the number of guys he remembered after someone else buzzed. I would venture that no more than a couple dozen guys were not remembered before the "for 10 points."
Athletics offer fame and fortune and the distant prospect of immortality, but as the vicissitudes of life and the vagaries of humankind's feeble capacity to call up the past intercede, the athletes' reflection on the glimmering surface of perfection ever more bears the lumpy patina of reality. The struggle to outpace the setting sun is nothing less than the struggle against death; today's hot prospect is tomorrow a guy. I salute the players of tonight's event for honoring these guys. It is not enough to bear witness; one must also remember.
We have two more packets, so if you want to play them, let's meet over tomorrow's lunch.

Re: "Let's Remember Some Guys"
Such a fantastic idea...there are so many guys out there whom i personally feel are not celebrated right. the timeline though should be pushed a little further, say start the whole thing earliest 1990, we did have ' guys' .and i mean real guys then, that would make an interesting discussion for their achievements through out their careers.theMoMA wrote: ↑Tue Feb 28, 2017 12:58 am Tejas, Naveed, Rob, and I have an idea for a guerrilla sports event called "Let's Remember Some Guys." Each tossup will be on a single athlete. The key is that the athletes must be in the vein of Deadspin's "guys": somewhat memorable, but not particularly dominant or otherwise notable.
