STAR BOWL (2019 Spring and Summer Side-Event)

Post by Victor Prieto »

Update, July 16th: 100% complete.

________

I’m pleased to formally announce STAR BOWL, a side event available from May (?) 2019 until October 2019. This will be an all-tossup event on things related to "space," mostly science fiction in film, TV and video games. Each tossup will consist of 6-7 lines in 10 point TNR. As of now, I am planning to produce eight packets, of which about 50% of that is written. The cost per person will be $10.

I cannot really classify the difficulty of this event, but I can say that there is a heavy emphasis on clues relating to content depicted on screens, and not books or fan fiction (with the occasional exception in Star Wars). Because of that, this tournament should be very accessible to the casual viewer - you don’t need to know the geography of Naboo or every villain of the week from season 3 of Star Trek: The Original Series to convert questions, although you can expect a handful of tossups in each category to put you on your toes. If you're a huge fan of certain franchises, don't worry, the lead-ins should still satisfy you.

Here is the current distribution. This may change at some point prior to April, but not substantially, and it definitely depends on who will be joining me to write (see below).

Core (13/0)
1 Battlestar Galactica
1 Firefly
1 Star Trek: TOS + films 1-8 + 2009 reboot series
1 Star Trek: TNG + films 8-11
1 Star Trek: VOY + Star Trek: ENT + Star Trek: DIS
1 Star Trek: DS9
1 Star Trek common link
4 Star Wars (split roughly between prequels + Clone Wars, originals + Rebels + Legends, and sequels + anthology films)
1 Stargate
1 core common link (almost exclusively drawn on the above franchises)

Outer Rim (8/0)
4 movies
1 TV series
2 video games
1 whimsy (tangentially space-related, and nothing to do with standard sci-fi fare)

I would like to run this at PACE NSC, possibly at ICT, and it will be made available for anybody who wants to run it between April 2019 and October 2019. I don’t intend to be at HSNCT, but if there’s significant demand to run it there, that may become a possibility. I've created a doubles matchmaking spreadsheet here.

I am looking for a single collaborator to help write this tournament. If you would like to be that person, you must be able to write the following: Doctor Who, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and Star Wars: Rebels. It would also help if you are able to pitch in for the “Outer Rim” categories. If I’m unable to find someone to help me out, the question marks in the distribution will remain at zero. Please email me if interested! This person is Tom Egan, and has contributed substantially to the set.

Is the Star Wars TV distribution just 8 questions on the Star Wars Holiday Special?

Is the BSG content from the 70s version, the 00s version, or a mixture of both?

There was also one or two Star Wars cartoon series in the late 2000s, I hear. But, I haven't watched those, which explains

...because 16 questions on the 10 released Star Wars films, mostly cluing from stuff in the movies, is already tricky, if my suspicion is correct that people know the movies very, very well.

Good question - it will be entirely from the 2003 miniseries and the subsequent series starting in 2004.

Yes, this is still happening. I knew that I was not going to be attending ICT some time ago, so I've been taking my time with it. I still would like to run this on NSC Saturday, after rounds are over. Few other things:

1) In an attempt to appease the masses, I've increased Star Wars content to 4 tossups per round (see original post for details).

2) Because of the increase in Star Wars content, I decreased some other stuff. Taking the hits in the distribution were Doctor Who from 1 to 0 (I had no takers for helpers on Doctor Who, so it will be shunted to the Outer Rim) and core common link from 2 to 1. Each packet should have 21 tossups.

3) Tom Egan jumped on board a couple months ago, and has contributed substantially to the set. Thanks Tom!

Based on what I've heard so far, I think there will be too few for full fledged teams, but too many for a shootout. I'm going to temporarily set this as triples (because it's cool). Field cap will be increased when staff sign up.

I've created a matchmaking spreadsheet here.

Is this still happening at NSC? I understand that Victor is very busy with the real event, but is it possible to delegate organization to someone else?

Thanks for the update Ashish! Of course, I’ll totally understand if Victor has more important things to do this weekend and needs to reschedule. Assuming it runs as planned, Zachary and Tracey or Stephen and Olivia, let me know if there’s a spot on your teams and I’d love to join.

No problem.

Assuming there is enough interest, I would be open to expanding from triples to teams of four. We could also do 6 teams, but we currently don't have the staff to pull it off.

Thanks for the praise, everyone! I'm very happy you enjoyed it. I had a blast writing this set, too.

Since I've gotten one request to mirror the set: I technically haven't finished it. My month of May got very hectic with NSC stuff, and I ended up cannibalizing packet 8 to cover some of the gaps in earlier packets (and only seven packets were necessary for the side event). I'm completing the remaining handful of questions over the next couple of weeks; the set currently stands at 91% completion. I expect it will be finished pretty soon.

If you're interested in running the event, shoot me an email or a private message. I don't have plans to run an online mirror, but if someone wants to, I can make that available in August or September. The set will be posted in October.

Hello,

I'm setting up an online mirror of STAR BOWL, which should last 2.5 hours on one day during the weekend of September 13-15. If you're interested, here is the link to the sign-up spreadsheet. Right now, it's a shootout, but if we get 12 or more people, we're either going to break it up into an upper and lower room or split up into teams.

Also: if you played the NSC mirror, I have 15 questions which were written after June 8th (I have to say some of them are the best in the set, too). If you would like to hear them, shoot me a message or email, and we'll figure out a time when I can read them to you online.

I liked this set a lot. The topics I knew were well clued and well represented. My only quibble was that some of the answerlines in my opinion were somewhat unnecessarily stringent, requiring a specific word or phrase that I didn't think was always necessary. But that's just my opinion.
