The Birth of a Nation: Slapdash Michigan Shootout Day (July 6)
The Birth of a Nation: Slapdash Michigan Shootout Day (July 6)
WHAT: A day of playing various trash events, almost certainly all shootout-style.
WHERE: Barring any last-minute location changes, this will be at the University of Michigan. We will meet in Mason Hall and attempt to find a classroom that is unlocked and not being used. Since we are doing shootouts, we will only need one room, which historically we have managed to find. For those familiar with U of M tournaments, this is the same building in which they are almost always in.
WHEN: Saturday, July 6. Plan on arriving between 9:30 and 10, so we can start promptly at 10:00. I am giving a slightly later start time, to allow for traveling and for attempts at room wrangling. I plan on getting there at least by 9 and can hopefully find a room ASAP. I will then post the room number to HSQB. We'd play some stuff, take a quick lunch break, and then play until probably early evening.
WHAT EVENTS: This is up in the air, depending on what we wish to play. We will try to play, depending on what the owners of these sets will allow:
-Mixtape (guerrilla music)
-STAR BOWL (science fiction)
-assuming speakers and projectors of some kind, Look at This Photograph (visual trash), TUPAC (music listening) and BUMPY II (visual film).
-We may play the tossups-only or some other format of the trash set No Banter, Please.
-I encourage all participants to write a packet of whatever length and theme they wish to read.
-Let me know if there's anything else you wish to play. We could also inquire about the tossups only of the sets Fogey and the Fort Osage trash set.
FORMAT: This is going to be most likely shootouts due to only having one room. If we really wanted to, we could do some format in which we make teams and play a packet as teams and then keep changing the teams (this seems silly for anything but a full trash packet). We would require people to assuredly read several times during the day--plan on at least once per packet set, for sure.
COST: Each set will have a specific cost per person. I will try and haggle down a pro-rated cost because we are doing shootouts/tossups only, but I cannot make guarantees. Costs that I know of:
Mixtape: Free if packet submitted, $15 otherwise (proceeds go to charity)
Star Bowl: $10 (confirmed)
BUMPY II: $5 (confirmed)
Photograph: $5 (confirmed)
No Banter: $8 (confirmed)
Plan on each event costing somewhere between $5 to $15 a person, aside from guerrilla packets of course. You don't have to play everything, of course.
OTHER NOTES:
-Since we cannot 100% guarantee a room, I would advise participants to take that into account when planning things. I'm confident we can find a room or at the very least find a study area or something, but we might have to move, cut things short, or (gulp) not start.
-Please bring a buzzer set. We will probably only need one, but it's good to have backups. If possible, I'll try and cover $5 of an entrance fee for people who bring workable buzzers.
-You're free to come and go whenever, but the schedule of day's events is going be in flux and dependent on what people at the time want to do.
-Feel free to spread the word. I would say going beyond twelve people is going to get sticky due to the room and buzzer constraints, but we can always try to work something out.

July 13th would likely work better for me than July 6th, but I can try to make July 6th work as well.

I proposed the 6th since I already had that weekend blocked off for Purdue (and presumably others did as well). If more would prefer the 13th, we can try that.

I'd be in for July 13th. (My two family weddings this year are scheduled for the 6th and Super ACRONYM so it'd be nice to get some trash in!)

Re: Interest in Slapdash Michigan Shootout Day
We've already got five and I suspect we can certainly get at least three more, so I'm willing to proceed.
If anyone has any other thoughts on what to play (or I guess any better location plans other than "squat in Mason Hall"), post here or shoot me a message. I would love to do:
*MIXTAPE
*Star Bowl
*If we have a projector/audio, TUPAC/Look at This Photograph/BUMPY II could also happen
We could also do something like "read the tossups from FOGEY" or a "guerrilla bring your own packet" (any theme and distro).

I would definitely be willing to write somewhere between 10-20 mediocre TUs for a guerilla bring your own packet thing.

I support these. I'd also certainly contribute a trash packet of 20 or more TUs on movies/shows/music/video games/books/internet stuff.

Heh, after some more feedback, we're now deadlocked on 6th vs. 13th, so I'll see what other feedback I get and make an executive decision by the end of the week. If it's roughly even or a tie by then, I'll just say I'm going to pick the 6th because that's the original date and I think fairer to the folks who were going to Purdue.

Re: Interest in Slapdash Michigan Shootout Day
If you end up doing this at U-M, almost every Mason Hall classroom has a projector and a computer that needs only a valid U-M login to work, so you'd only need one U-M person to be there.
I can't be that person. I'll be busy all month. Just thought I'd add this info.

A quick bump to say if you're interested in doing this (especially if you have input on location and/or date), post here or let me know by mid Friday, as I want to set a date by then.

Re: Interest in Slapdash Michigan Shootout Day (July 6)
I have decided this will be on July 6th. I apologize to those that this inconveniences or screws over; the July 13th date would have done the same to a few others. I selfishly prefer the 6th date as well, so c'est la vie.
I will update the first post with more "concrete" information.

I'll have 12 buzzers that can hook up to a laptop running the PACE Buzz software (1 USB port required per 4 buzzers), and I'll also bring my laptop that has the PACE Buzz software and 3 USB ports.

A bump to remind folks in the Michigan area or nearby environs that this is happening next Saturday.
On a more substantial note, if anyone wishes to announce a packet that they are planning on writing and bringing, please do that as well. I plan on bringing a 20-30 tossup packet mostly on film and film-related things.

I'll try to put together a packet's worth of audio questions in lieu of TUPAC not being available. How many I'll actually get done is predicated on how quickly I finish up my CO questions.

Yeah, please read the updated first post.
In short: Show up between 9:30 and 10:00--I'll find a room in Mason or Angell Hall (the latter is connected to Mason) and post the specific room as soon as I can.

I will have at least five tossups of dubious merit that can hardly be considered a packet, but if played will hopefully make at least one person in the room smile.

Re: The Birth of a Nation: Slapdash Michigan Shootout Day (July 6)
We are in Angell Hall (which is connected to Mason) Auditorium D.
If you come in through the Mason Hall entrance, Angell Hall is connected--follow the signs. The auditoriums are directly across from the "Fishbowl" computer lab which should be obvious to see.
I saw someone enter through one of the Mason Hall doorways, so they may be unlocked. I entered through one of the doors to Angell Hall off State Street, which was curiously unlocked. I believe, although I am not sure, that more doors will open throughout the day.
If you cannot get in, text or call me at 616-929-(1+1--5+1--3+2--2+1).
I do not believe this room is being used for any orientation sessions, but we can try moving somewhere else if we have to move (all of the other auditoriums are also open here, although I could not find any open classrooms).
Apologies for being sweaty; I had to walk all around the building outside to find an open door.

So this happened I suppose. Stats from Star Bowl are posted below. Mike Cheyne and Connor Teevens battled it out for Sci-Fi supremacy with Connor taking it in the last round. I was just happy to not be in the negatives.
Kenji won both rounds of mixtape played and we did not keep score for No Banter, but I felt we all got some solid buzzes.
