List of NSC (2018) Side Events

Post by UlyssesInvictus »

This is a hub for the announced and/or putative side events at the 2018 NSC. Please post if you have any more information about these side events (a main thread, for instance), or believe that I'm missing one:

Event | Subject | Day/Time | Chance of Running
==========================================
FILM | Film/Movies | Friday 9-11 | Confirmed
Historature | Listory (History+Lit) | Saturday night | Confirmed
SOUNDTRACK | Audio (Pop Culture) | Saturday night | Likely
Pyramid of QANTA | QB AI Expo Match | Saturday night | Confirmed
David Riley Coaches Conference | Coaches Conference | Friday 7-9 | Confirmed
World Quizzing Championship (see this thread) | All | Sat 9 | Confirmed

If enough of these side events all start running, I'll make a spreadsheet where people can sign up as well.

I'll keep this thread updated, but please keep in mind that there may be some delay.

There is a corresponding HSNCT side-events here: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=20994

Just a subtle bump that the OP has been updated to show that FILM (Friday), Historature (Saturday), Soundtrack (Saturday) events are confirmed running, with links. Will continue to update if more come.

Could you also add the human-computer question writing competition, Saturday night, details TBA?

It's not a traditional side event, but it has cash (well, check actually) prizes and will only take an hour or so.

Updated! IDK what you wanted to call it, or what questions you're running on, so I've called it Skynet for now :P

It's potentially lame name is "Pyramid of QANTA", and it's run on whatever questions the community writes through http://write.qanta.org

It's not a side event, but the David Riley Coaches Conference will take place Friday night, probably from 7-9.

Will the QANTA match be a large exhibition event? I'm concerned about it drawing an audience away from my tournament and others'. If there's no way to avoid the conflict, it may just be wise for me to cancel my event.

Just a reminder this is open and aimed at players as well as coaches and will have many notable former & current players on the panel.

How much interest is there in Let's Remember Some Guys on Saturday night? It'd be a free shootout likely in someone's hotel room. I think we could fit in some packets after Historature and SOUNDTRACK. Let me know if you are down to Remember some guys.

An unimportant (but important to me...) side-note is that Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final is in DC on Saturday night, so I'll probably trek out to a bar in RTC to go watch it, if anyone would like to join, or even host a viewing in the NSC hotel bar.

I will be organizing a Friday Night (after David Riley) playtest of Max and Friends Wet N' Wild Summer Fun Packet(s), a guerrilla set written by moderators of ILQBM. We will likely have about 40/40 or 50/50 of total content ready for play.

The Hyatt Regency Reston will be a World Quizzing Championship venue on Saturday at 8:00 PM US EST (Room TBD). This is not a buzzer quiz event. It is a written test of 240 questions split into 8 categories of 30 held over 2 hours. Think you can beat No. 1 quizzer in the world, Kevin Ashman? Give it a try. Lauren Onel will be the proctor. I will not be at PACE but contact Jakob Myers for more details.

Our Human vs. Computer expo match will be at 8pm on Saturday, and we're looking for players (staff, coaches, players, all welcome):

We currently don't have any women sign ups, which I would really like to correct.

I would like to add another note about this. Wales and South Africa are playing a rugby test at RFK starting at 5 P.M. Their fans will absolutely flood the bars in D.C. once the match ends a little after 7. As long as you stay near Reston like Raynor mentions you shouldn't have a problem, but if you head downtown to watch Caps-Vegas outside Capital One Arena be prepared to see some extremely intoxicated fans clad in red and green making quite the raucous.

I don't know how many people will actually show up. At HSNCT, it was cross-scheduled with a fair number of side events (mostly HS folks showed up). That said, it's also pretty short (40-ish minutes), so it's possible to coexist.

This happened. We didn't keep stats but I feel like we remembered a lot of guys--including some I, unsurprisingly, didn't remember myself--over the course of six packets. Everyone remembered some definite guys and I think we had a lot of fun.

Is there any interest in reading some of the left over packets over Discord or something? I thought this set was really fun to play in person, but Discord could be cool too if we had voice.
