6th Annual HIT (Hoover Invitational Tournament) 10/30/2010

Post by Joshua Rutsky »

This is an UPDATE of an early "Save the date!" post to let you know that Hoover High School (Hoover, AL) will be holding the 6th HIT on October 30, 2010. This event is now confirmed as being a combo event offering something for teams at every level, as we will be offering two divisions for play:

NOVICE: Your team may enter the novice competition, which will be played on this year's Fall Novice Tourney set, under three rules:
1) Freshmen and Sophomores automatically qualify to play in the novice division regardless of previous experience.
2) Juniors and Seniors may compete on this set if they are certified by their coach to have played in fewer than six (6) tournaments in their quiz bowl career.
3) Middle school teams looking for practice will be welcome.

ADVANCED: Any team may decide to enter the advanced competition, which will be played on NAQT's IS-98.

As you can see, our tournament format will be 20/20 this year, not Alabama format with worksheets, etc. Preliminary plans are for teams to play prelim pools, followed by rebracketing and pool play to determine winners. Teams are guaranteed at least seven rounds. As usual, we will offer major discounts to any team traveling from out of state or more than three hours in order to encourage teams from outside Alabama to join us. Entry fee will be $60, with a $5 discount for a working buzzer set (up to two). Multiple teams from schools are welcome. Teams from public schools facing significant budget problems may request the out-of-state discount by contacting me at [email protected], with the nospam replaced by my school's name.

We are currently looking into locating a hotel in the immediate area (we have several within five minutes of the school) that is willing to give us a group rate for anyone interested in coming over. Information on this will be made available when we secure a commitment from said hotel.

Hoover looks forward to hosting this event, and we hope that you'll join us!

Per the folks at NAQT, we are now confirmed as being an IS set tournament, most likely IS-98.

Put Columbia down for one JV team in the Novice Division. All my varsity players have an AP Prep Course that day.

Thanks,

Would you need my help as a moderator again Mr Rutsky? I need to give at least a 30 days notice at work and was wondering.

Updated, and now includes Hume-Fogg as well. Out-of-state and long-distance teams, remember that you can contact me and request a two-for-one deal (register your varsity, get your JV free!) or fee reductions. We are still a long way from our team cap, but we are expecting a big uptick in registrations following the October 8th Alabama coaches' meeting, so if you're interested, let me know ASAP.

Complete stats and results from this tourney are now available at http://results.scobo.net/HooverHighSchool under 6th Hoover Invitational Tournament.

Congratulations to the following top finishers:

Varsity division (NAQT IS-98):

1. Hume-Fogg, TN
2. Vestavia Hills, AL
3. PJP II Catholic HS, AL (A team)
4. Holy Spirit, AL

National Novice Tournament Mirror:

1. Altamont School, AL (A team)
2. Hoover High School, AL (B team)
3. Altamont School, AL (B team)
4. Hume-Fogg, TN (B team)

Middle School Mini-Tourney:

1. Altamont School, AL (C team)
2. Altamont School, AL (D team)
3. Collins-Riverside MS, AL
4. KDS DAR Middle, AL

Format: In case you are keeping track, in both Varsity and Novice tourneys, each team played a prelim round-robin. The top two from each pool (Novice) or the top team from each pool (Varsity) advanced to play in the championship round-robin. Remaining teams that chose to stay to continue play were assigned in descending order to play in 2nd and 3rd tier round-robins. Several teams chose not to stay and continue, which is why there are discrepancies in the number of games played from team to team.

Middle school teams played a round-robin, followed by a 1 vs. 2 and 3 vs. 4 championship and consolation match.

Thanks to all teams who attended for their patience in light of the confusion we had during the event.
