Prison Bowl mirror @ Northwestern (4/16/11)

Post by Dan-Don »

Northwestern University's annual Wildcat high school tournament will be played on April 16, 2011 using questions from Hunter College High School's Prison Bowl set. I will be directing the tournament. Though any high school teams will be allowed to enter the tournament, our goal is primarily to provide teams who will be attending PACE's National Scholastic Championship a chance to warm up for the NSC by playing each other at the very university at which the NSC will be held.

Please note that this tournament conflicts with the IHSSBCA Banquet. We cannot guarantee that the tournament will finish in enough time for anyone to attend the banquet. If you are planning on attending the banquet, do not attend Wildcat. Also, do not register if you plan to leave the tournament early to attend the banquet. Only register if you intend to play the whole tournament.

LOCATION
The fourth floor of Kresge Hall on our main Evanston campus. Kresge Hall is located 1880 Campus Drive Evanston, IL 60208. Please park in the Lakeside Parking Structure, which is located at 1 Arts Circle Drive Evanston, IL 60208. An interactive map can be found here.

FEES & REGISTRATION
To register, fill out this Google form.

$80 for first team
$70 for each subsequent team
-$5 for each working buzzer system (maximum 2)
-$10 for each experienced moderator (maximum 1)
Minimum fee: $60

Other discounts, for shorthanded teams, teams travelling a great distance, teams in financial need, or other miscellaneous reasons, can be negotiated privately on a case-by-case basis by emailing me ([email protected]).

QUESTION SET
The questions will be standard mACF format (20 pyramidal tossups, 30-point 3-part bonuses, no computational math), similar to last year's, written by the Hunter team. They're aiming for regular difficulty (similar to HSAPQ). The distribution will look something like this:

4/4 Literature
4/4 History
4/4 Science
2.5/2.5 Religion, Mythology, and Philosophy
2.5/2.5 Fine Arts
1/1 Social Science
1/1 Geography
1/1 Pop Culture, Current Events

Last year's set can be found at quizbowlpackets.com. More information about this year's set can be found here.

TOURNAMENT FORMAT
The tournament will consist of round-robin pool play. Our goal is for everyone to play 10 rounds followed by an advantaged final. Matches will be played 4 vs. 4 with no more than 6 players being allowed on a single team. If you intend to bring 7-12 players, you must enter a B team, and if you intend to bring 12-18 players, a C teams, and so on. We will be following all collegiate ACF rules.

REGISTERED FIELD
Auburn x 1
Carbondale x 1
Chicago Christian x 1
Latin x 1
Loyola x 2
Stevenson (or Malice) x 1

EXPRESSING INTEREST
Lisle sans Greg and Michael

MODERATORS
Mike Perovanovic

Those interesting in moderating this event should post here or email me. You will receive a free lunch.

TRASH
We're mirroring a few packets (the entire set won't be done) of Jeremy White's FOGHAT trash set immediately after the end of the tournament. Details can be found here.

If you have any questions, I can be reached by emailing [email protected].

Bumping this.

EDIT: I guess there's some kind of pentathlon happening on campus on 4/30, so this will now occur on 5/7.

I'd just like to point out that this now conflicts with the only SAT date that doesn't conflict with IHSA Regionals or NSC.

It also conflicts with MSNCT, which I had previously agreed to staff, so given the date change I can't staff after all. Sorry.

Yeah, this seems pretty important as a Junior who has not taken the SAT yet, but the fact that

might outweight that.

Assuming Northwestern isn't planning on going to ACF Nationals, maybe. However, it's the IHSSBCA banquet, so some people may not want to attend at all, or will want to be certain of leaving by 3:30 or so.

Yeah, I just realized I also agreed to staff MSNCT. So I'm gonna rule 5/7 out. 4/30 is literally an impossibility: there is not a single room to be had on campus. I guess I'll add a poll to check interest in 4/16. (We're not attending nats.)

Carbondale could attend on 4/16 only given that we can find someone to take us; Coach Lorinskas is busy that day.

Though I guess my school's not officially going, I've talked to some friends and Latin would definitely bring a team if the date's changed to the 16th.

Buffalo Grove High School would love to attend on the 7th of May. There is a Science Olympiad State Competition on the 16th of April.
Not that I would choose SciOly over Quizbowl.

All right, we're going to go ahead and have this on 4/16. We're not making any guarantees that the tournament will finish in enough time to for anyone to get to the IHSSBCA banquet. Do not register if you plan to leave the tournament early to attend the banquet. Only register if you intend to play the whole tournament. Register by filling out this Google form. There will be a cap of 16 teams for this tournament with a slight possibility of 18. Definitely no more than 18.

The field has been updated. Jeremy White has graciously allowed us to mirror FOGHAT, a trash tournament, this weekend. Fees would probably be small, with $10 per team being donated to Matt's Buzzers. If you're interested in playing, please let me know by selecting one of the options from the new poll in the announcement post. Anyone (players, coaches, college kids, adults, whoever) would be able to play.

Ben Chametzky has joined our field as the 7th team. If we could get to 8, that would be preferable.

I'll update the stats after every round. We're running a full RR among 7 teams then rebracketing into 4/3.

They continued their trend of missing two bonus parts in the next match, too.

Chicago Christian left after the prelims, and the teams elected to do playoff brackets of 4 and 2 instead of a 6-team RR in order to get to trash quicker.
