tournament officially open for registrations

Post by shylar »

all teams are invited to join us in columbia, maryland for our sixth annual tournament. always competitive, the sixth annual green eggs and hammond challenges up to 50 teams with in-house, heavily edited and repeat-eliminated questions in a it's academic modified format. an opening broad-based category round is followed by tossups. a second individual category round contains 5 questions each from two separate categories for each team. the final tossup round makes or breaks the team. in addition, hammond hosts the only coaches' round in the area between the end of the preliminaries and lunch.

we also have question sets from previous years ($10 each, via email after payment) and this year ($15, via email after the tournament) for interested coaches.

Richard Montgomery A defeated Gonzaga in a very close final. Whats most impressive about RM's victory is that they were missing half of their regular A team. I thought the tournament was well run. I enjoyed hearing questions on categories we don't hear many times during the year like dog breeds and drug types (I would have really enjoyed a category on serial killers). My only regret is that my team had to go without our top 3 players and our B team's captain. I guess sleeping, running, tennis tournaments and swimming are more important...slackers  .

I wrote a bonus on dog breeds for TJ's tournament last year, but they made me put in poodle and something else for Dalmatian and Viszla.

Viszla is obscure because everyone thinks they are small, orange-brown weimraners, but why did they make you get rid of dalmations.

That sounds like a repairable question. You could start with Croatia and end with spots and firehouses. Everybody knows that. Shoot. You could even throw in a weird reference to 101.

Well, the tossup was on Labrador retrievers, and it was a quickie "identify the country of origin given the native dog breed" bonus, so they told me to take out Viszla (Hungary) and Dalmatian (Croatia) in favor of two other dogs. Now that I remember it, one of them wasn't poodle because it's hard to say whether it comes from Germany or France and one of the more annoying team members argued too loudly for me to want to press the issue.
