High School Quiz Bowl at Stanford on 10/24

Post by ericwhitmansmith »

On Sunday, October 24, 2004, the Stanford Quiz Bowl Club will host
Cardinal Junior Classic, the latest installment of our annual quiz
bowl tournament for high schools.

We especially encourage out-of-state teams to attend. At least one
team is coming from Seattle, and the 2002 event included a team from
Mississippi!

Juniors and seniors might enjoy combining the tournament with a
college visit to Stanford.

The most up-to-date information is on the tournament web page:
http://quizbowl.stanford.edu/tournament ... r_classic/
but I've copied the current information below for your convenience.

We hope to see you!
-Eric Smith, President, Stanford Quiz Bowl Club

====================
On Sunday, October 24, 2004, the Stanford Quiz Bowl Club will host
Cardinal Junior Classic, the latest installment of our annual quiz
bowl tournament for high schools.

The tournament is an NAQT qualifier; the top 15% of the field will
qualify for the NAQT 2005 High School National Championship
Tournament. Team and individual prizes will be awarded.

The questions will be provided by NAQT. We will be using Invitational
Series #45-A. This is an introductory invitational set, which means it
will be easier than NAQT's non-A sets. It should be enjoyable for the
top teams but should also be suitable for less-experienced teams and
players. Here is a sample packet of the same difficulty level.

Each team must consist of players from the same high school. Only four
team members may play at once, but substitutions may be made during
the match. (Teams with fewer than four players are fine.) There is no
limit to the number of teams a school can send! We encourage sending
multiple teams instead of sending teams with alternates.

The tournament will be in untimed "tossup/bonus" format, with
10-question halves. The exact schedule of the tournament depends on
how many teams register, but teams should expect to play at least 6 games.

The tournament will start at 9:30am and may run as late as 6pm (though
we hope and expect to finish earlier). Please be at the tournament by
9:30am sharp; we'll check-in, have a brief rules meeting, and then
start play as soon as the rules meeting is over. Teams arriving late
risk forfeiting matches.

The tournament will be held on the Stanford campus, in Building 60,
which is to the right of the church on the main quad. Teams and
helpers should check-in at room 62C.

Fees:
Each regular team: $65
Each team which expands your squad: $35 (**)
Working buzzer system: -$5 (*)
Experienced moderator all day: -$10 (*)
Early registration (complete, final info submitted by 11:59PM on
Sunday, October 10, 2004): -$10 per team

(*) NOTE: These discounts may be limited and will be given on a
first-come-first-served basis. All discounts must be claimed via email
before the registration deadline.

(**) Squad Expansion Discount: If your school brings more teams to
this event than they brought to any one-day tournament last year, the
additional teams can play for $35 per team (or $25 if you register
early). $25 is approximately our cost to let your team play; it covers
the fee we pay NAQT for the questions, plus copying.
Example 1: If your school did not attended a one-day tournament last
year (Quiz Kids and BAAL don't count against you), any teams you send
get the discount.
Example 2: If your school did not send more than one team to any
tournament last year (again BAAL participation doesn't count against
you), then any teams beyond the first get the discount.

All teams attending must register via email. The deadline to register
(or cancel) is 11:59PM on Sunday, October 17, 2004. To register, send
email to quizbowl-admin@l.... Please specify:
1. your school name
2. the number of teams you're bringing
3. any discounts you plan to claim (remember that some discounts must
be approved by the TD).
4. If possible, a cell-phone number we can use to contact you on the
tournament morning.

Teams may be allowed to register late for a $10 penalty, but only at
the discretion of the Tournament Director. Payment will be due at
check-in.

If possible, we'd appreciate an expression of interest from your team
before the registration deadline. Consider registering early to save
$10 per team.

Please, please don't cancel at the last minute.

Question Security: This tournament will use questions provided by
National Academic Quiz Tournaments, LLC. We are using Invitational
Series #45-A and have purchased geographic exclusivity for Northern
California. It is the responsibility of participating teams to make
sure that they have not attended (and do not plan to attend) another
tournament anywhere in the country that is using the same packet set.
Teams can find a complete explanation of geographic exclusivity on
NAQT's website at http://www.naqt.com/hs/geographic-exclusivity.html
and of their responsibility in maintaining question security at
http://www.naqt.com/security-responsibility.html. Teams that don't
know which packet sets were used at previous tournaments may find this
information at http://www.naqt.com/assigned-packet-sets.jsp. Teams
with questions about exclusivity or security should contact NAQT at
naqt@n... immediately.

Parking: Teams should park on or near the "Oval" at the end of Palm
Drive. For directions to campus we suggest that you click here and use
the "Driving Directions" feature to generate custom directions to the
intersection of Palm and Roth, which is near where you should park.
Since it's a weekend, parking should be plentiful and free, but be
sure to check the signs! (Some parking spots are restricted even on
weekends.) Note that Serra Street / Serra Mall is blocked off, so you
can't drive down it. Here is a map showing the tournament location,
Building 60. Teams and helpers should check-in at room 62C by 9:30am
sharp.

Airports: Stanford is located 20-25 minutes by car away from San
Francisco (SFO) and San Jose (SJC) airports, and 45 minutes from
Oakland (OAK).

Hotels: Hotels are not cheap in this part of California, but you may
improve your chances by looking in Redwood City, Atherton, Menlo Park,
Los Altos, and Mountain View - towns within 15 minutes of campus - in
addition to Palo Alto.
Here's the Stanford hotel page.

Restaurants: Palo Alto and neighboring communities are home to a
multitude of excellent restaurants that serve many different types of
cuisine.

Dress for the event is casual.

Please feel very free to email us with any questions or concerns you
may have.
