LIST Mirror @ Columbia University (3/9/13)
This is the official announcement for the NYC Metro regional site of the Ladue Invitational Spring Tournament, a high school academic quizbowl tournament to be hosted by the quizbowl team of Columbia University on Saturday, March 9, 2012. This tournament is open to any high school team that wishes to attend.
This tournament will probably take place in Hamilton Hall on the grounds of Columbia University. The exact address is 1130 Amsterdam Avenue, New York, NY 10027. Hamilton is the highlighted building on this map.
TRANSPORTATION AND PARKING: We strongly encourage all teams to take public transportation to the tournament if possible. The 1 line stops right outside campus, and a number of buses also stop nearby. There are a few parking garages in the neighborhood, but they can be expensive. Parking is sometimes available on Morningside Drive between 116th and 120th street.
TIMES: Registration will run from 8:15 to 8:45. An opening meeting will then follow, with the goal of starting Round 1 as soon as possible after 8:45. Teams arriving after 8:45 run the risk of forfeiting their first game.
QUESTIONS: The questions will come from LIST III, a tournament written by the quizbowl team of Ladue High School in Ladue, MO. More information about this set is available here: viewtopic.php?f=109&t=13386
The questions will follow a modified ACF format; that is, games of 20 tossups with 30-point bonuses, untimed. The questions will be distributed for free in electronic format after all sites have been completed. Sample packets from last year's incarnation can be found here: http://www.quizbowlpackets.com/58/
FORMAT: The field will initially be capped at 24 teams until we have a better idea of our staffing situation. We may expand the field if we can secure a significant number of outside staffers.
A format will be devised when we have a clearer picture of how many staffers and teams will be in attendance. All teams will be offered a minimum of 9 games in any format, should they desire to play them. Trophies will be awarded to the top three teams, and book prizes will be awarded to the top eight individual scorers.
REGISTRATION AND FEES:
-The fee structure is as follows:
Base fee: $70 per team.
Buzzer discount: $5 off school's total fee for each fully functional system (i.e., control box and eight activators all work). We encourage schools to bring as many sets as possible.
Staffer discount: $10 off school's total fee. This could be a coach or student who is not playing. Volunteer staffers must stay through all the games (except finals) in order to receive credit for their school.
Travel discount: For teams travelling to the tournament from out-of-town, we will be happy to work out travel discounts on a case-by-case basis.
-To register, e-mail Aidan Mehigan at [email protected] with the number of teams, buzzers, and staffers you want to bring, and an email address where you can be contacted with details. We also ask that all teams provide a cell phone number by which they can be contacted on the day of the tournament in the case of emergencies. You should receive prompt confirmation of your registration. Feel free to share this announcement with any schools you think would be interested in attending. There is no further registration form or other action needed on your part in order to be officially registered; you only need to e-mail Aidan at that address with the information requested.
METHOD OF PAYMENT: All teams must pay by the day of the tournament. We prefer to accept payment in person right before the tournament starts, but we will accept checks by mail ahead of time if your procedures require it. We can accept cash, personal checks, or checks from school, school district, or quizbowl club funds. We have no ability to process purchase orders, credit cards, Paypal, or any other forms of payment; please do not bring them to the tournament expecting them to be accepted.
Unless special arrangements are made with the tournament director beforehand, any team that has not paid by the day of the tournament will be charged a $25 late fee and will have two weeks to pay in full before we start mailing letters to their school administration about it.
Please make checks payable to “Columbia University” with “Quiz Bowl” on the memo line. If you require a pre-tournament invoice in order to have a check cut, let us know as soon as possible so that we can send you the paperwork in time.
TEAM & ROSTER SIZE: There may be a maximum of six players on one team's roster, up to four of whom may play at one time. There will be no exceptions to this rule. If you bring more than six players, you must register a second team to have all of them play. There will be a halftime substitution opportunity in each game. Each player may appear on only one team's roster throughout the day - no switching from the B team to the A team, etc. Teams may also play shorthanded if necessary.
FOOD: Neither breakfast nor lunch will be provided at this tournament. A list of local eateries will be supplied.
Please e-mail me if you have any further questions. We’re looking forward to seeing a wide variety of teams from New York and surrounding states on March 9.

Additionally, because this is Columbia's first time hosting a high school tournament, I would greatly appreciate it if anyone were willing to share an email mailing list of local teams with me. Please contact me if you have such a list.

North Babylon will likely bring one team. We have some buzzer sets, but we'll determine in the future how many will be brought with us.

Irvington will register 1-3 teams for this. I can also give you a mailing list of all the teams in our league in Westchester, but they mostly play so i don't how useful it will be.

Just want to bring to your attention that unfortunately your date choice might affect some schools who would normally attend this tournament. Most of the Kellenberg team members are crossovers to Science Olympiad, and the State Championships are being held this weekend in Central Valley, NY. Presuming that we qualify for the SO State Champs, Kellenberg will not be able to attend.

Re: LIST Mirror @ Columbia University (3/9/13)
Since the field seems to be filling rapidly, I'll put Bergen down for 2 teams, 1 buzzer at this point.
There are barely any other weekends in the spring available, when you combine our regional calendar with the college quiz bowl calendar:BroNi wrote:Just want to bring to your attention that unfortunately your date choice might affect some schools who would normally attend this tournament. I think we need to try a little harder next year to avoid the bust-boom cycle of no local academic tournaments in November and one in December, then five in March.February 16:Presidents' Week/Winter break
February 23:NHBB NJ State Championships @ Princeton University (on an A Set)
March 2:Bloomfield's BATE on IS 124; BHSAT @ Yale University
March 9:SAT A HS Mirror of LIST @ Columbia University
March 16:Livingston's March Madness (on Set IS 122); LI NHBB @ HHH West (on a C Set)
March 23:King's Park Annual KPNAQT (On Set IS 125A); Blue Hen Invitational @ Newark, Delaware
March 30:Passover/Easter/Spring Break
April 6: Prison Bowl @ Hunter College HS in NYC
April 13: ACT; NAQT Metro-NY State Championships @ Scarsdale (tentative)

Hey guys, a number of people have posted in this thread to say they'd like to come, but not many have emailed me to register. I'd just like to remind everyone that posts here don't count as registration; you must email me.

With so many teams on the waitlist, is there any possibility of a field expansion? We might be able to provide several buzzers, or some readers, if that's the limiting factor.

Re: LIST Mirror @ Columbia University (3/9/13)
It's worth noting that while rooms, readers, and buzzers are the most obvious limiting reagants on the size of a tournament, the amount of work behind the scenes that needs to be done also does scale up. I've got no problem with a first-time host putting a modest cap on the field. No offense to them, but we did kind of see at Scarsdale what can happen when a first-time host gets in over their head: HQ can't keep stats up to date, bad moderators can't get replaced, and rebracketing takes really, really long.

Re: LIST Mirror @ Columbia University (3/9/13)
Yeah, as much as I would like to expand the field, it's not going to happen this time. This isn't my first time running a tournament, but it's my first time running one with this set of staffers. I don't really know how things are going to go, so I'd rather stick with a super nice number number of teams and a really easy format. After I see that we can run 24 teams successfully, I'd certainly love to run larger tournaments at Columbia in the future.

Preliminary stats are available here: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournament ... standings/
Like many other things associated with Technical Sergeant Carter, the bracket named after him exploded. Ridgewood and High Tech C emerged from the circle of death to reach the top bracket, and Hunter B is in the second.

After the playoffs, High Tech A and St. Joe's A are both at 9-2. They are playing a tiebreaker to have the disadvantage against the 10-1 High Tech B.

Re: LIST Mirror @ Columbia University (3/9/13)
St. Joe's A won the tiebreaker and the first game of the final, then High Tech B won the second to take the tournament. Congrats to all of our teams, and especially to our finalists, who played some of the most exciting matches I've had the privilege of moderating over the years.

Special thanks are due to all the outside staffers who helped this run. To our friends at NYU (Mirza, Aaron, and Yogesh) and to the Hunter alums (York, Mehnaj), we couldn't have done it without you. If I'm forgetting anyone else who helped make this tournament a success, it is surely from frazzledness rather than spite.
