ATROPHY at Northern Illinois University (20 April 2013)

Post by TheDoctor »

Northern Illinois University's Quiz Bowl Association will host the fourth annual April Tournament Run On Pennies, Halfpence, and Yen on 20 April 2013. This year's tournament will mirror 2013 BHSAT, and will use standard format. The tournament is open to all teams. Schools can register up to two teams initially; C teams and further will be waitlisted until 1 April, and will be allowed into the tournament after that date on a first-come-first-served basis. The initial field cap is set at eighteen teams, but this number may rise if we have significant interest and staff.

This tournament has traditionally served as a preparatory tournament for nationals-caliber teams. This year, all teams are welcome, but we may split the field into divisions if a) we have enough registrations to merit doing so, and b) a significant number of registered teams would prefer we do so.

Register by emailing [email protected] with the number of teams you wish to register AND the discounts you will receive (buzzer, moderator, etc.).

Fees
Entry Fee per team: $30
Extra team: -$5
Working buzzer set: -$5
Experienced moderator without laptop: -$5
Experienced moderator with laptop: -$10
Minimum fee: $10/team

Field
Bloomington A
Bloomington B
Dentino School for Forlorn Corn Borns
Fenton
Keith Country Day School
St Joseph

Waitlist
Bloomington C

I would like to clarify that the director for this tournament is Brad Fischer. Please do not email me with any questions, as I will be unable to answer them. You may direct questions to [email protected] or to Brad's personal account.

Bloomington is interested in "cleansing our palate's" from the IHSA questions. We aim to bring 2, maybe 3 teams, as many as we can really. I'll keep ya posted.

I'd be able to help staff as well and can bring my own laptop.

See you in April,

St Viator has registered, so there is one spot remaining between us and 16 teams.

Tourney check-in will start at 8:30, coaches meeting at 8:45, Round 1 at 9 AM. We'll do two prelim pools of 8, followed by rebracket into (top 3 from each pool)/(next 3 from each pool)/(last 2 from each pool), and play three rounds of playoffs. The bottom playoff pool plays a round robin, including a rematch. The top two playoff pools will carry over the games already played against teams in that pool, so the playoffs will consist of a 6-team round robin, and we'll have an advantaged final if necessary. Lunch will be after Round 5. (All of the preceding, and more, will be sent to coaches shortly.)

The overall tournament was fun(despite are abysmal record) and showed just how much my teammate and I need to study before we go to Atlanta in May.

A big thank you to Brad and Kristen not only for hosting this tournament but for also all the other work they do for quiz bowl.

I somehow doubt I put up 496 points against Saint Joseph: I think it was 490. Also, there are lots of duplicate games in the stats, but I don't know if that's necessary for carry-over or not.

Thanks Jonah, and thanks to everyone who played and staffed today. The tournament couldn't have run without Danielle Long, Jonah Greenthal, Alec Krueger, Adam Smith, tournament director Brad Fischer, and coaches Laudermith, Dillon, Greene, Prince, and Peterson. Congratulations to IMSA and thank you to all the teams who attended.

Both of these are fixed. I went with 495 because that makes the bonus points divisible by 10 (and it's a somewhat more likely typo anyway).
