There have always been four tapings in one day, and this schedule supports that scenario with 81 teams. As such:
-- The February 1 and February 8 tapings will each have 3 first round and 1 quarterfinal match.
-- March 1, March 8, April 5, and April 12 will be more quarterfinals.

And I'm in agreement with your assessment of the final three dates.

It may be useful to incorporate this with the thread for 2013-2014 DC area scheduling when it eventually appears.

At the same time, I'd caution against making this a primary tool for choosing a tournament date. SAT and major holidays are larger detractors from tournament attendance than It's Academic tapings.

It seems kind of silly to schedule tournaments around an activity that only involves three or four teams that play actual Quizbowl.

What do you mean? I am pretty sure every quizbowl team in the D.C.- Baltimore area that plays good quizbowl tournaments also play in either the DC or Baltimore show. That's probably at least 15 teams. Even though these dates shouldn't be a primary concern in determining dates for tournaments, it should at least be taken into consideration. Almost anyone who plays quizbowl in this area will tell you how much it sucks to have to miss a good tournament to be on that show.

If you try to schedule around every team, you'll never be able to host a tournament. Every week there's going to be conflicts, and there will be one or two teams that can't make any give tournament due to scheduling conflicts.

Yes, but on certain days, particularly the DC semifinals, many teams are affected. Just as an example, this year TJ, RM, and Blair were all in the semi finals and if there had been a tournament none of those three teams would have been able to go. Look, I never said that we need to "schedule around every team" or that It's academic should be everyone's highest priority, but if a certain team is deciding between hosting on same random date x when there isn't a taping and date y when there is a semifinal or something that could prevent several good teams from coming to their tournament, that school should know that in order to make an informed decision about the best date. That's why Paul took the time to post these dates in the first place; it can help tournament directors choose a date that will minimize conflicts, though it will probably be impossible to eliminate them.

Although, it seemed for us both this year and last, we had tappings the same days as the NHB, which is why we didn't do the bowl this year.

Can someone send me contact info for whoever runs It's Ac so I can reach out to them about 4/26? Hopefully they might be slightly more rational about things than the haughty science bowl overlords.

It's Academic needs to work around something almost no other tournament needs to work around: television studio schedules. Your chance of them changing a taping date for the convenience of another tournament schedule is about as close to zero as you can get.
