2014 PACE NSC: May 24-25 in Washington, DC

Post by fett0001 »

The Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence is pleased to announce that the 2014 National Scholastic Championship will be taking place at the Hyatt Regency in Reston, VA, part of the Washington, DC, metro area, on May 24-25, 2014.

This hotel is located near the Dulles International Airport in a “town center” setting alongside several restaurants and other shops. The hotel’s website is located here: http://www.reston.hyatt.com/en/hotel/home.html. Reservations for the PACE room block are made through this link: https://resweb.passkey.com/go/2014NatlScholasticChamp. Reservations made through the main website will not receive a discount.

The 2014 NSC will be directed by Sarah Angelo, with the assistance of 2012 and 2013 TD Matt Weiner and the other members of PACE, and the set will be edited by Rob Carson.

The field will be capped at 96 teams. Recent fields have drawn 192 teams from 95 schools in 23 states, DC, and Canada.

The fee structure follows:

· Base fee: $550 per team

· Buzzer systems: -$10 each per school, no limit

· Staffers: -$50 each per school, max 2 per school

· Hosting a gold-certified tournament: -$10 each per tournament, no limit

· Hosting a platinum-certified tournament: -$20 each per tournament, no limit

· Early payment discount: -$25 from total fee for paying by March 1

Qualification and registration will remain much like last year. I will post an update when those procedures are finalized.

The tournament will use the same game format as the NSC has since 2010. Games will continue to consist of 20 tossups and up to 20 bonuses, with missed bonus parts bouncing back to the other team. The All-Star Game will once again be played on academic questions.

As in past years, registration will begin at 7 AM on Saturday and gameplay will continue through 6 PM, resuming at 8 AM Sunday. All teams will participate until 11 AM on Sunday, with top finishers continuing through the finals until 4 PM.

Teams are welcome and encouraged to stay for finals, awards, and the All-Star Game and are consequently advised not to book flights departing earlier than 7 PM on Sunday. Memorial Day in the DC area is an exciting weekend, and we encourage teams whose plans allow for it to depart later on Monday and enjoy the holiday.

The hotel is located near Dulles International Airport, and will run a free shuttle from that airport as well as another shuttle from the new Wiehle/Reston East Metro station, which will open with Phase I of the Silver Line by the end of calendar year 2013. Though Dulles will be the most convenient airport to fly into, the new metro station will also allow teams flying into Reagan National to reach the hotel without a car through any of several methods.

Rooms in the hotel are available at a discounted rate of $119/night at the following link: https://resweb.passkey.com/go/2014NatlScholasticChamp. Both rooms with two double beds and rooms with a king bed (with or without a rollaway second bed) are available at that rate. The discount is available for whatever length you choose for your stay--teams wishing to arrive early or stay late during the holiday weekend for tourism in the DC area may use this rate for all nights. Rooms may also be booked by phone; simply indicate that you are booking for the PACE NSC.

If you have any questions about the NSC or PACE in general, please e-mail Mike Hundley, Director of Communications, at [email protected].

We hope you’ll join us in DC next May.

Registration for Platinum certified teams is now open. Those teams should receive an email shortly containing details about registering, however, here's the info again for reference.

So, you’ve qualified for PACE NSC and are now eligible to register. To register, please follow the following steps:
Step 1:
Fill out the Google form here with your information: Registration Form
Of note, indicating that you will be staying in the hotel does not register you with the hotel. You must visit the hotel’s event website to do so. Hotel Registration

After you have filled out our registration form, an invoice will be emailed to you.
Step 2:
Mail either your full registration fee or your $100 down payment to us. Our mailing address is:
Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence
PO Box 11221
Blacksburg, VA 24062
This address has changed from last year.

Please make checks payable to “Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence” or “PACE”.

The fee structure is listed below:
• Base fee: $550 per team

• Buzzer systems: -$10 each per school, no limit

• Staffers: -$50 each per school, max 2 per school

• Hosting a gold-certified tournament: -$10 each per tournament, no limit

• Hosting a platinum-certified tournament: -$20 each per tournament, no limit

• Early payment discount: -$25 from total fee for paying by March 1

All teams are required to make a down payment of $100 at the time of registration.

Please note that:
-Teams are not considered registered until we receive this down payment.
-You can choose to pay the full registration fee as soon as you register, and not be required to make any additional payments (i.e. you will not pay an additional $100 in addition to your registration fee because of this). In any case, we will count the $100 towards the registration fee unless your team is being paid for in full by the team’s school/school district and another group, such as the students and/or coach, fronted the down payment, in which case we can reimburse you $100; or your team withdraws from the tournament, in which case:
-The down payment is fully refundable (minus $5 processing fee) until March 1st, 2014.
-The down payment is half-refundable (minus $5 processing fee) until March 15th, 2014.
-After March 15th, 2014, the down payment is non-refundable.

All registration checks must be postmarked by April 24. For each day your check is not postmarked after April 24, a $15 fee will be added to your entry fee. If your check is not received by May 4, PACE reserves the right to drop your team from the tournament.

If you have any questions, let me know at [email protected], or post in this thread

We are pleased to announce that registration for teams who have qualified at two or more PACE-affiliated tournaments is now open! Mike Hundley will be sending an e-mail to all qualified teams shortly. Such teams can use the same instructions mentioned above in Mike H's post about platinum qualified teams.

As another reminder, registration for teams that qualified at regular (i.e. non-gold, non-platinum) affiliated events, and the wild card bid process, will open on January 1.

Registration for all qualified teams is now open! If your team has qualified at any PACE-affiliated tournament, regardless of its level of affiliation, you may begin the registration process using the Registration Form on our website. As a reminder, registration is not complete, and no spots are guaranteed in the field, until PACE receives a $100 deposit; those deposits are fully refundable until March.

Additionally, the application process for wild card teams at the PACE NSC will be opening soon. Check back for more details on that shortly.

The procedure for submitting a wildcard bid is as follows:

Teams that wish to submit a wildcard bid for the 2014 PACE NSC should send an e-mail to PACE member George Berry at [email protected]. Please include the following information in the e-mail:
1. Team name (i.e. Smith High School B).
2. Expected team roster, including grades of players. Note: you are not bound to keep this roster.
3. Link to stats with top performances this school year.
4. Does your school meet the PACE small school definition? See http://www.pace-nsc.org/2014-nsc-small-jv/ for more information.
5. Brief summary of why your team deserves a NSC bid.

The PACE Wildcard Committee will review all bids and respond quickly.

Could someone please clarify where 2014 PACE Competition is being held. The hotel website ( the page where you book the rooms) says the that event is 25 miles from the hotel. Save your time and do not call the hotel because apparently they do not the ability to answer if an event is being held in their own hotel.

Thanks

The 2014 NSC is happening inside the Hyatt Regency Reston. I'm not sure what the thing on the booking page is about; we'll ask them to remove it. Sorry about that!

I sent in a down payment several weeks ago but the PACE NSC site has not been updated since February 7th, so my school is still listed as not yet fully registered. I mention this not to complain but to suggest that a more efficient updating of registered teams might quicken overall registration, since as of now more teams are listed as only having completed step one, when in fact maybe 79 teams have. If schools believe that only a small percentage has fully registered, it might give them a false sense of confidence that they can continue to delay the 2nd step of registration, or even the 1st. In short, can PACE update its registration page more efficiently so that all who might want to go in May will have more accurate and updated information which teams can use to not only start their registration process but to finish it and fill up the field as all at PACE hope?

I prepared an update prior to my earlier post, and forgot to save the update. The update has been applied, and is accurate as of Monday at 1PM. That's my mistake, and I apologize.

Edit: As you said, however, we have nearly 1/3rd of the field (30 teams) fully registered for the tournament. I'd like to remind everyone that the Early Payment Deadline is this Saturday, March 1. Checks postmarked by the first will receive the discount.

A total of 97 teams have now signed up for the NSC.

The 43 teams that have submitted their deposit have secured their place in the field. That leaves 53 spots available.

Teams that are serious about attending should continue to register and submit deposits, as the first 96 deposits will comprise the final field.

Also, payment deadline:

All registration checks must be postmarked by April 24. For each day your check is not postmarked after April 24, a $15 fee will be added to your entry fee. If your check is not received by May 4, PACE reserves the right to drop your team from the tournament.

EDIT:
To further clarify, the first 96 postmarked payments will comprise the field. If there is a tie for the last spot by postmark date, then the team that filled out Step 1 first has priority.

After the field has filled, all teams having completed Registration, Step 1 will be placed on a waitlist, in order of their original form submission.

The Schedule/Format:

Saturday morning (Preliminaries): Assuming the field fills to 96 teams, they will be placed into 12 groups of 8 teams each, taking team strength and geographical diversity into consideration. Each group will play a round-robin in Rounds 1 through 7. After Round 7, each group will split into top two, next two, next two, and bottom two. Any ties will be played off immediately. After tiebreakers, teams will break for lunch.

Saturday afternoon (Playoffs): The top two teams from each preliminary group will advance to the championship tier (a total of 24 teams). All other teams will advance to a corresponding consolation tier, each of which will also consist of 24 teams. Each tier will have 4 groups of 6 teams, seeded based on preliminary results (ranking within a group and points-per-bonus will be used to seed the groups), which will play a round-robin in Rounds 8 through 12. In the championship tier, any tie for 2nd/3rd or 4th/5th in a playoff group after Round 12 will be played off Saturday afternoon before teams are dismissed.

Sunday (Superplayoffs & Placements): On Sunday, all teams will play to determine their final rank. In the championship tier, the top two teams from each playoff group will compete for 1st through 8th place; the middle two will play for 9th through 16th place; the bottom two will play for 17th through 24th place. In each case, teams will carry over one result from Saturday (against the other team from their playoff group which has advanced to the same final group), and play the other six teams in their final group (Rounds 13 through 18). Meanwhile, teams in the non-championship tiers will play a schedule of 3 games (Rounds 13-15) to determine their final position. For instance, the 3rd place team in each Tier II playoff group will play against each other to determine 33rd-36th place.

Junior Varsity & Small School championships: We will recognize the top three Junior Varsity and Small School teams at NSC. For each classification: If any such teams are in the top tier (1st-24th place), they will be ranked on the basis of their overall finish and the top finishing team eligible for JV/SS recognition will automatically win the title. If there is a tie between such teams, there will be a tiebreaker to determine the JV/SS rankings. If no such team is in the top tier, there may be a final to determine the JV/SS champion. If the second-ranked eligible team is within 6 places of the top-ranked team, there will be an advantage final. If the top-ranked eligible team is more than 6 places ahead of the second-ranked team, there will be no final and that team will be declared the JV/SS champions. It is anticipated that all tiebreakers and finals for the Junior Varsity and Small School titles will be held during Rounds 17 and 18; this may be adjusted to ensure that a team eligible for both is allowed to play for both titles if necessary. PACE will update all teams in contention for JV/SS recognition at the start of Sunday play where they should go for finals. PACE reserves the right to modify the JV & Small School procedures until the opening meeting.

Championship Games: In the top Superplayoff group, if one team has a two-game lead over all other teams, that team will be the outright National Champion. If first place has a one-game lead over second place, an advantage final will be held. If the top two teams are tied, there will be a one-game final. If there is a tie for second place, tiebreakers will be played to determine the teams in the final. Tiebreaker minigames will also be played to determine the final rank of all teams in the top 24. All teams are encouraged to remain on site to watch any tiebreakers and the finals, as well as the All-Star Game and awards ceremony which will immediately follow.

Advantage Final System: PACE uses an "advantage final" or "two-game final" system to determine the overall tournament champion if the two teams with the best records are separated by one game. If the team with the better record wins the first game, that team wins the championship. If the team with the worse record wins, a second winner-take-all game is played. The same format may be used for the JV and Small School finals as well (see above).

I don't know if y'all are aware but Phase I of the Silver Line is highly unlikely to be open in time, considering that Metro only just announced that they expect 90 more days. Probably something for teams that are flying in to keep in mind.

Yeah, unfortunately it looks like the Silver Line won't be open. However, the hotel does offer a free shuttle from Dulles and we encourage teams to take advantage of that.

I'd like to remind all teams that their spot is not confirmed until their down payment is submitted.

As a consequence of this, teams that have not yet conducted Stage 1 of registration but still would like to attend still can register and get their down-payment and registration fee in ASAP and will most likely have a spot in the tournament.

In the morning, once we have all teams checked in (to confirm we won't be replacing anyone with standbys) and have a few other things cleared up, I'll be posting the tournament schedule here. We are hoping to provide stats updated regularly throughout the day on Saturday; a link will go up in this thread when we start posting the numbers. Good luck, everyone!

Here's the schedule (attached) and a link for stats that will update (with roughly 30-60 minute delay as we enter the data):

All name corrections will be made at the end of the tournament, as we are working in multiple stats files. Those should be sent via forums PM to our head stats person, Jon Pinyan, whose username is jonpin. The playoffs are underway; next year we will have three statkeepers managing this volume of scoresheets rather than two. Full prelim stats are posted at the link above.

Is there any way to keep up with the playoffs? It appears that Round 10 or 11 is underway, and all I've got is Jason Flowers's Twitter and maybe one game per round from Fred's Twitter.

I am having difficulty submitting updated SQBS files to HSQB/DB from the tab room. We'll do the best we can to keep everyone up to date.

MorganV wrote:How were the playoff assignments made?
As was described in the Tournament Format flyer sent out in the days leading up to the tournament, "The teams will be seeded 1-24 by rank in preliminary group and then PPB, and then the teams will be placed in groups of equal strength, such that no two teams from the same preliminary group will be placed in the same playoff group." Here's the exact mechanism in the top tier (the same process was used in the other three tiers):

1. The 12 group champions were 1-12, the 12 runner-ups were 13-24. By rule, when two teams are tied in record and going to the same place, PPG is used to determine the higher seeded team (Dorman A and High Tech A are considered group champions).

2. Within each dozen, the teams are seeded by PPB:
LASA A 24, St. John's 23.46, Ladue 23.33, High Tech A 21.69, LASA B 21.52, Stevenson 21.46, Wilm Charter A 21.2, W. Albemarle 21.05, Dorman A 20.85, Northmont 19.9, Oak Ridge 18.51, St. Joseph 18.13 are designated "1A" through "1L" respectively.
Farragut 20.9, Maggie Walker A 20.63, Centennial 20.62, Detroit Cath A 20.36, Bloomington 20.14, Torrey Pines A 20.13, Auburn A 20.12, Dunbar A 20.12, Chattahoochee 19.4, Ridgewood 19.22, Walter Johnson 18.93, Bellaire A 17.97 are designated "2A" through "2L" respectively.
Since the two bolded teams were equal in PPB to two decimal places, Auburn was seeded ahead of Dunbar on PPG.

3. A snake system was used. The natural alignment of playoff groups was (reading across):
1A 1H 1I 2D 2E 2L
1B 1G 1J 2C 2F 2K
1C 1F 1K 2B 2G 2J
1D 1E 1L 2A 2H 2I

4. A few manual switches were then made to avoid repeat matches from the preliminary rounds. Group champions could not be moved, only group runner-ups, and only within a column. In the top tier, these changes were made:
(a) 2A Farragut with 2B Maggie Walker A [both had repeats]
(b) 2C Centennial with 2D DCC A [DCC had a repeat]
(c) 2G Auburn A with 2H Dunbar A [Dunbar had a repeat]
(d) Since neither 2L Bellaire A nor 2K W. Johnson could go in the LASA-A group, I put 2J Ridgewood there, and slid both 2L and 2K down a row.
Similar changes had to be made in each tier.
NB: The mistake of Inglemoor appearing twice and Manheim A not appearing was not due to this change procedure, but a literal typo I made when setting up the spreadsheet two weeks ago and never caught.

5. One group from each tier was located all on the Ballroom floor. If we had been on time and it had been necessary, I would have switched an entire group to accommodate any teams with limited mobility. Obviously with the rush we didn't have the time to consider that this afternoon, but looking at the groups we had, by happy circumstance this was not an issue.

Charter B is in bold above because they have clinched the JV title. They can finish no worse than 48th, with the next highest JV no higher than 61st. Pleasanton is the third place JV team.

Cave Spring and Mountain Lakes, in italics, are still in contention for the Small School title. They meet first thing tomorrow morning, and will of course be within 6 places of each other, so they will play a final during Rounds 17 (and 18, if necessary) starting at ~11:00am, in Lake Anne B.

Attached is a schedule for the Super 8. Ladue is the only team to go 12-0 so far, but W Albemarle, St. John's, and High Tech shed their losses overnight.

[edit: Oops. That should be "Western Albemarle" not "Albemarle" in the attached file.]

We have access to St. John's and LASA results, but that leaves us missing a game or two each round. SJS beat Farragut by 200.

Trying to figure out what's going on right now. So LASA and Ladue is pending protest resolution, with the winner taking one finals spot? Is WA with 1 loss in the other finals spot or are there a bunch of two loss teams in the other spot?

How much of that is right
