Mellon Bowl XI, Pittsburgh, PA (October 26) [IS-130]

Post by Ndg »

High school coaches:

The Carnegie Mellon Quiz Bowl Team is pleased to announce its annual Fall NAQT High School Tournament, Mellon Bowl XI, to be held on Saturday, October 26. We will be using set IS-130. The format will be tossup-bonus, with timed rounds.

If you are interested in registering, please email [email protected], including the number of teams, buzzers and timers you plan on bringing. Space may be limited, so please register as soon as possible. The final registration deadline will be October 21, so that we can finalize the schedule and staffing. The early registration deadline is October 4; schools that register before then will receive a $10 flat discount.

The pricing of the tournament is as follows:
- First team: $70
- Second team: $60
- All additional teams: $50 each
- Question purchase (after the tournament): $20 flat fee

The following discounts are available:
- Working buzzer system: $10 discount per system
- Working timers: $5 discount per system
- Registered before October 4: $10 flat discount
- Traveled more than 150 miles to attend: $10 flat discount

We strongly encourage all teams with working buzzer systems to bring them, to ensure that we have enough buzzers for all rooms. If enough teams register that we need outside moderators, a substantial discount would be added for teams that could provide moderators; an e-mail will be sent out to registered teams if this occurs.

On the day of the tournament, registration will take place from 8:30 to 9:00 AM, with an aim to begin round 1 at 9:30. In this tournament last year, each team played at least 10 games, with the tournament finishing by 5:00 PM; we anticipate similar figures for this tournament. Full details on how to get to campus and where on campus the tournament will be taking place will be sent out to all registered teams in early October.

Hope to see you there!

We are capping the field at 18 teams, so there are currently three open spots. I would encourage interested teams to register as soon as possible.

We are working to expand the field to 24 teams, with the help of outside moderators. All registered teams should have received an email about providing moderators. We will offer a $10 discount per moderator.

Logistical information was sent out to all teams:

Map

Click here to see a map of campus.

http://www.cbi.cmu.edu/repository/cbi-map-campus.pdf

Parking

Parking in the Morewood parking lot is free on weekends. This is on Forbes Ave. between Morewood Ave and Craig St and is marked P12 on the map above.

Location

The initial meeting will be in Wean Hall 7500 (marked 30 on the map; for those of you at last year's Mellon Bowl, it is the same auditorium). Games will be held in Porter Hall.

Payment

We have received checks from some of you already. If you have not sent us a check, we remind you that you must bring it to the tournament. Barring exceptional circumstances, we cannot let teams play from whom we have not received payment.

Schedule

Registration will take place in Wean 7500 from 8:30 to 9:00. Round 1 will begin at 9:15. Please be on time so that you don't miss any games.

Tournament format

Consistent with NAQT rules, rounds will consist of two 9 minute halves, in between which substitutions may be made. You may consult the official NAQT rules for more information.

http://www.naqt.com/rules.html

Expect each team to play about 11 rounds. The precise nature of the preliminary rounds and re-bracketing will be determined once the field is finalized. We will not be using single- or double-elimination playoffs.

Food

We will not be providing lunch. There are a variety of affordable options a short walk away. These are concentrated on Craig St. between Forbes and Fifth avenues; and on Forbes Ave. in the University of Pittsburgh's campus. I will be happy give directions to specific locations on Saturday.

Mellon Bowl XI has been awarded Gold Affiliation by PACE. This means that the top 20 percent of teams (in this case 5 teams) will qualify for PACE NSC in Washington, DC on May 24-25.

EDIT--- We now have 24 teams, so 5 will qualify.

This tournament happened yesterday. After 11 rounds, Hubbard A and Chartiers Valley Red were tied with 10-1 records. Both teams declined to play a final round, so first place was awarded to Chartiers Valley by ppg.

Thank you to everyone who came today, and I hope we'll see you next fall for Mellon Bowl XII.

Stats for the preliminary rounds can be found here. Final stats will soon be avaiable there, as well as at NAQT.

Complete stats are now up on the database. Apologies for the delay. They will be visible on NAQT's website shortly.
