MD Quizbowl Championship @ UMD College Park (4/6/14)

Post by Mewto55555 »

HSAPQ, in conjunction with the Maryland Quizbowl Championship Association, is pleased to announce our Maryland Quizbowl Championship at University of Maryland, College Park on April 6! This tournament will feature the top 4 finishing teams at each of the regional tournaments at Centennial High School, UMD College Park, and Perry Hall on February 22.

Both the regional events and the Maryland Quizbowl Championship will use HSAPQ’s 8-8-8 format: a first and third period of 8 powermarked tossups followed by a one-part bonus read to the team whose player correctly answered the tossup, and a second period of 8 directed bonus parts, 4 for each team. This format is designed to provide quicker-moving games to keep new teams engaged, piquing their interest in quizbowl and drawing them to regular local events.

To register for your nearest regional tournament, or to find out more information, please visit http://www.mdquizbowl.com/!

The qualifiers were: Perry Hall, Pikesville, John Carroll, and Aberdeen from the North site; Oakland Mills, Centennial, Richard Montgomery, and Archbishop Spalding from the Central site; and Quince Orchard, Eleanor Roosevelt, Don Bosco Cristo Rey, and South River from the South site. Perry Hall, Oakland Mills, and Quince Orchard were the regional champions.

Weird to see that a MD champion will be crowned without having to face RM or Blair.

I believe that RM qualified out of the Centennial regional, though I doubt that was a full-strength squad since they took 3 losses. Speaking for Blair, we had multiple conflicts with the championship on 4/6, so we opted to pool the money forward towards our PACE registration.

Whoops, missed the RM part. WJ isn't in the mix too. I hope this tournament can get these teams next year and establish its importance for all of MD. It has then right mindset.

Emails went out today with logistic updates and requests for any unconfirmed teams to confirm or decline. Anyone who thinks they've qualified but haven't gotten at least two emails about it should let us know.

Our team wants to thank UMD and HSAPQ for offering such a good opportunity for bringing some of the greatest teams in the area together in a full round robin. Our team enjoyed that we were exposed to playing such a good set of teams. The only disappointments that we had for this was that our team lost two of our games by 5 points and another by 10. Of course we know that this type of thing happens but in the first game it came down to a challenge on a math question (which we still haven't heard back from). The other 5 point win came with the judgement of moderator accepting an answer after "time" was said. Our captain also voiced concern over how the style of the set promoted these types of disappointing losses, due to bonus not allowing a team to pull ahead (though we understand that this an HSAPQ decision and we did enjoy for the most part the different format). So we walked away with the disappointing record of 4-7 but at least our team got to learn a lot.

On a side note, will/when will stats be posted for this tournament?

Thank you UMD and HSAPQ for the opportunity.
