2015 ONQBA Provincial Championship (Lisgar CI, 7 Mar 2015)

Post by bsmith »

The Ontario Quizbowl Association, in collaboration with Lisgar's quizbowl team, is pleased to host the 2015 ONQBA Provincial Championship. It will be held at Lisgar Collegiate Institute in Ottawa on March 7, 2015. This tournament will be the premier high school quizbowl event in Ontario, serving as an opportunity to bring competition from all active regions in the province. This tournament is also an opportunity for teams to qualify for the NAQT High School National Championship Tournament and the PACE National Scholastic Championship (pending approval from both organizations).

I, Ben Smith, will act as tournament director, and can be reached by email at president -AT- onqba.ca . As a resident of Ottawa, I can also assist out-of-town teams trying to get to or around the city.

We have applied to NAQT to be the "state" championship for Ontario and use the accompanying question set. In the unlikely event that the ONQBA bid fails, we will obtain an alternate source of questions. Assuming the use of NAQT questions, the games will be timed and calculation questions will be removed. We also expect to be able to include approximately one tossup and bonus per game of Canadian content. Games will follow NAQT rules.

We tentatively have a field cap of 20 teams, though we can possibly find resources to handle more teams given enough notice. For a field of 12 teams or fewer, there will be a full round-robin plus additional playoff rounds to get all teams to at least 8 or 9 games. For fields greater than 12 teams, there will be preliminary pools followed by playoff tiers.

The tournament fees are as follows:
$65 for the first team from a school
$55 for the second team from a school
$45 for each additional team from a school beyond the second
$10 discount for working buzzer systems
$10 discount for staff
Other discounts for activity on the Ontario circuit (see below)
Minimum total fee: $0

To encourage more activity in the high school circuit during the year, the ONQBA is also offering "participation" discounts. A school that participated in an ONQBA-certified event can claim up to one of the following:

$40 for hosting an ONQBA-certified event
$15 for attending at least two non-provincials certified events
$10 for winning a certified event
$5 for attending one non-provincial certified event

At this stage, all academic quizbowl events intended for high school teams with at least one Ontario team in attendance will count as certified. History Bowl events in Canada count; "Reach-style" events or SchoolReach regionals do not.

All teams from Ontario are welcome and encouraged to attend. No prior qualification or experience is necessary, although it is recommended that you become familiar with NAQT rules. Also note that, as a non-profit organization, the ONQBA will donate any surplus proceeds to schools that attend national quizbowl championships in the US.

Lisgar is in the new position of both hosting and playing in the provincial championship. They are permitted to participate and vie for titles, on the condition that they meet the staffing and logistical commitments they outlined in their bid to the ONQBA. The ONQBA will ensure there is no favoritism either for or against the host team, just as we will for any other competing team.

See you in March, and good luck to all the teams!

This tournament will be the NAQT Ontario provincial championship, and will use IS #146. Approximately 1/1 of Canadian content will be added to the rounds.

A long-overdue update to say that we are still seeking teams.

Schools sending 2 or more teams should be prepared to have one staff ready (with the discount available), as was discussed locally back in December. This is similar to the staffing requirement for History Bowl, but more lenient.

The field has been updated above; we will have 9-12 teams.

We will meet in Lisgar's cafeteria/auditorium before 9 AM.

There will be a newspaper reporter on site during the final rounds. She has been instructed not to publish question content. I'm not an authority on this, but players under 18 are recommended to notify their parents before providing any quotes for an article.

11 teams played in the ONQBA Provincial Championship today.

Colonel By faced their closest high school match yet, defeating Lisgar A 390-360 in the final game. Colonel By defends their provincial title. Bell came third. Stats were Joe's responsibility, but he will have them ready in the near future.

Thank you to all the teams that attended. Special thanks to the many university students that took the time to help staff the tournament.

This was the last (scheduled) high school quizbowl tournament this year, so thank you to all the participants over the course of the season and I hope you had an enjoyable experience.

What Joe has found has been corrected. Patrick's link above should still work; if not: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournament ... standings/

For those interested participants, a small analysis into how the inserted Canadian content (14/13 across the 14 packets) affected the stats:

An inserted Canadian tossup was heard 56 times, once for each game. The field went 4/38/17 on them, for 75% conversion. In comparison, the field went 182/753/185 on the unaltered content, for 84% conversion.

The teams heard inserted Canadian bonuses 42 times. The 0/10/20/30 spread was 1/14/18/9. The field earned 770 bonus points on Canadian content, for a field PPB of 18.33. For the other content, the field earned 16750 points on 935 bonuses, for a field PPB of 17.91.

On a team-by-team basis:

Tossup points per tossup heard

Field…………….17.93…….18.33…….17.91

*Actually means "original NAQT content". There was occasional Canadian content provided by NAQT.

An “average” team actually got 233 points in a 20-tossup game. An “all-Canadian content” game would theoretically give a team 201 points, while an “original content” game would give 235 points.

I usually make conversion statistics to compare NAQT results in Ontario with SchoolReach results (spoiler alert: NAQT conversion is higher). Team-by-team results are not intended to praise/shame them, but to use a comparison with local SchoolReach lineups. I specified Canadian content this year to see how close I was to the statistical standards of the set (the tossups weren’t powered enough and negged too often, while the bonuses had a moderating effect by gravitating to 10s and 20s).
