Blacksburg High Academic Invitational III (3/14/15)

Post by mithokie »

This is the general announcement for the Blacksburg High Academic Invitational III, which is a high school academic quizbowl tournament, to be hosted at Blacksburg High School in Blacksburg, Virginia, on Saturday, March 14, 2015 from 8:30am to about 5:00pm.

Location, directions & parking:
The tournament will take place in the academic wing of Blacksburg HS, located at 3401 Bruin Lane in Blacksburg, Virginia. There is plenty of parking available on-site for both cars and buses.

Questions:
This tournament will be using the Potatoville Varsity set. This set is not currently scheduled to be mirrored in the local area, so this may be your only opportunity to hear the set this year.

Affiliation:
This tournament has been Platinum certified by the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence, so it is an opportunity to qualify for the National Scholastics Championship, which will occur on June 6–7, 2015 in Reston, VA. The top 25% of teams will qualify; more information is available at this link.

Format:
This tournament will use the tossup/bonus format. A round will consist of 20 tossups with correct tossup answers earning a team a bonus in which it can earn up to 30 additional points, usually broken into three questions each worth 10 points. There will be no math calculation tossups or bonuses; this does not preclude tossups or bonuses on mathematical concepts. Teams will be seeded to preliminary groupings before being reseeded based on record for playoffs. All teams will be offered a minimum of 9 games. Trophies will be awarded to the top teams, and book prizes will be awarded to the top individual scorers.

Fees & registration:
base fee: +$70 per team to your school's total fee. There is no limit to the number of teams who can attend from one school.

Buzzer discount: -$5 to your school's total fee for each fully functional system. There is no limit to the number of systems you can bring.
A fully functional buzzer system is defined as follows:
A buzzer system that clearly indicates which player has buzzed.
The control unit and at least 8 activators work, including lights on either or both of the 8 activators and control unit.
If the activators plug into a control unit via a modular connector, such as a telephone plug, tape must be provided if any latching tabs are broken.

Staff discount: -$15 to your school's total fee for an experienced moderator.
-$5 to your school's fee for an experienced scorekeeper.
This can be a coach, parent, student, or other person who is not playing. Volunteer staffers must stay through all the games (excepting finals) in order to receive credit for their school. There is no limit to the number of staffers you can bring.

New to Quizbowl discount: -$20 to your school's total fee for schools that have not competed in a weekend invitational quizbowl tournament using pyramidal toss-ups since August of 2012.

Minimum fee: The minimum fee is $40 per team.

To register for this tournament, email me at [email protected] with the number of teams, buzzers, and staffers you intend to bring, an email address where you can be contacted with details, and a cell phone number belonging to someone who will be attending the tournament, so that we can contact you if you are running late.

Please feel welcome to share this announcement with any schools that you think would be interested in attending.

Method of payment:
All teams must pay by the day of the tournament. We can accept cash, personal checks, or checks from a school, school district, quizbowl club, or other source. We have no ability to process purchase orders, credit cards, Paypal, or any other forms of payment. All checks must be made out to "Blacksburg High School."

Team & roster size:
There may be a maximum of six players on one team's roster, up to four of whom may play at one time. There will be no exceptions to this rule. If you bring more than six players, you must register a second team to have all of them play. There is a half-time substitution opportunity in each game. Each player may appear on only one team's roster throughout the day; there is no switching from the B team to the A team, etc. Teams may play shorthanded, with fewer than four players.

Blacksburg High School reserves the right to cap the field based on availability of space and staff; the current cap is 24 teams. Teams registering after the field is full will be placed on a waitlist and will enter the field as we expand or as teams drop.

Food:
Light refreshments will be available before the tournament while teams wait for the opening meeting. Refreshments are first come, first serve, so please arrive closer to the beginning of registration than the end. Lunch will be provided by the tournament. We will provide a list of suggested eateries within a 5 minute drive of campus for the lunch break.

Please email me if you have any further questions. I'm looking forward to seeing a wide variety of teams from Virginia and surrounding states in March.

We are changing our date to Saturday March 14, 2015. This is the Saturday of the March SAT, so teams should be aware of that before registering for our tournament. I will update the original post with correct information, but I will need a moderator to adjust the thread title.

Any schools that are interested in competing at our tournament on Saturday need to make contact with me about registration no later than Wednesday to ensure your spot in the field. I recognize that the SAT on Saturday may be keeping some teams from making the trip this weekend. With that in mind, we are willing to decrease entry fees for teams with less than full rosters.

Teams of 1 will be charged $40, Teams of 2 will be charged $50, Teams of 3 students will be $60, Teams of 4-6 students will be charged at the full $70 rate. Please contact me at [email protected] if you would like to register. If the field remains small, we will enter house teams and run the tournament as a (multiple) round-robin to get all teams a satisfactory number of games. Get those registrations in!

Thanks!

Congratulations to Cave Spring A for winning the Blacksburg High Academic Invitational III on Saturday March 14, 2015. Christiansburg A forced a final match at the end of the playoff bracket by getting 4 of the last 5 toss-ups including 3 powers to erase a 65 point deficit and win by 20. In the final, Cave Spring A jumped out to a commanding 265-30 lead at half, but Christiansburg stormed into the 2nd half to pull within 115. Cave Spring put the match away with some solid buzzes at the end of the match winning 390-240.

There was also a playoff for the 3rd place trophy. Cave Spring B and C finished 5-5 after the playoff bracket, losing twice each to Cave Spring A and Christiansburg A. Cave Spring B won the prelim meeting, but Cave Spring C pulled off the in-school upset of their B team 205-180 in the playoff bracket match to force a tie break match for the 3rd place trophy. The rubber match was back and forth with the lead changing hands 3 times in the first 14 toss-ups. After 16, Cave Spring B lead 175-130, and Cave Spring reeled in the next 3 toss-ups including 2 powers to make their lead insurmountable. Cave Spring C won the 3rd place trophy by a final score of 230-210.

I would also like to give a shout out to Abingdon HS for competing in their first ever Saturday invitational quizbowl tournament. They finished at the top pf the consolation bracket with a 5-5 record. We hope to see them at more events in the future.
