Kentucky NAQT State Championship, 2/28/15, Bowling Green, KY

Post by Rococo A Go Go »

The Kentucky Quizbowl Alliance is pleased to announce that we'll be hosting the Kentucky NAQT State Championship on February 28, 2015. This year's championship will be hosted on the campus of Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, KY. I, Nick Conder, will be directing this tournament with assistance from WKU Quizbowl players and other members of the Kentucky Quizbowl Alliance.

Questions
NAQT IS-146

Registration
To register for this tournament, please email [email protected] and tell us how many teams you plan to bring. Currently the field is capped at 24. Please bring payment with you on the day of the tournament. This is no set in stone, but I expect that checks should be made out to the Kentucky Quizbowl Alliance

Fees
The base fee is $80/team.
The minimum fee $40/team.
There is a $5 discount per working buzzer system
There is a $15 discount for each experienced moderator you can provide for the tournament; before claiming this discount, please contact us.

Format
We expect our format to be similar to past tournaments at WKU, UK, and UofL. This means we will have pool play for both the prelims and playoff rounds, and teams should expect to play around 10 games. The exact format in terms of number of rounds, pool sizes, etc. will be determined when we figure out exactly how many teams we'll have in February.

Awards
Awards will be given to the top 4 teams and the top 8 players. This tournament is also part of the Goldenrod Cup series, and the top ten teams will receive points applied to that competition. The top 15% of teams will qualify for the NAQT High School National Championship Tournament, and we are seeking affiliation with PACE and expect a certain percentage of teams to qualify for their National Scholastic Championship as well.

To register for this tournament, please email us at [email protected]

We currently have 11 teams registered for this with a month to go. If you haven't registered yet, do so soon, because you're running out of time to compete for a state championship.

We have 16 teams currently registered for this Saturday's tournament. I know it's likely that teams will add or drop, and I know we'll be in flux for a little while, but I would like teams to have their registrations (how many teams, buzzers, and staffers they are bringing) locked in by 9 PM CT on Thursday. I'll be emailing everybody again tomorrow to make sure the currently registered teams are still planning to attend with the number of teams I think they want; teams should feel free to add 2nd or 3rd teams if they want. Anybody who has yet to register but is interested should contact us ASAP; I've sent out several rounds of emails so hopefully a few more teams are mulling it over.

As far as tournament specifics, it will run for the most part like a normal quizbowl tournament. Registration will start at 8 AM CT on Saturday morning in the lobby of Cherry Hall on WKU's campus, and last until 8:30; this will be followed by an opening meeting with Round 1 expected to start close to 9 AM. When you register, please present payment and fill out a roster form, with checks made out to the Kentucky Quizbowl Alliance. There will be a lunch break at some point in the day, there will be an individual awards ceremony while re-bracketing occurs, and a team awards ceremony after the conclusion of the playoffs/finals. We will be using NAQT rules except that rounds will be 20 questions each, untimed, with no stoppages other than a short halftime break to check scores and make substitutions after question 10. There will be prelim brackets and playoff brackets, and teams should expect to play approximately 10 games; we'll have a final (potentially an advantaged final) after the conclusion of the playoffs if necessary.

Teams who finish in the 15% will qualify for HSNCT, as will the highest-finishing team who has yet to qualify for HSNCT. Small school teams who finish in the top 15% will qualify for SSNCT, as will the highest-finishing small school team that has yet to qualify for SSNCT. This tournament is a platinum qualifier for the PACE NSC as well, meaning that the top 25% of the field will qualify for NSC. The top 10 teams will also receive points for the KQBA Goldenrod Cup; this is the penultimate tournament in the Goldenrod Cup series for 2014-15 and so teams hoping to win the Cup will need to compete if they want to win it.

That's all for now. Email us at [email protected] to register or change your current registration.

Congratulations to Glasgow High School for winning the 2015 Kentucky NAQT State Championship with a 10-0 record. DuPont Manual finished 2nd, Gatton Academy finished 3rd, and Ballard finished 4th. Olivia Kiser was the top scorer of the tournament. You can currently find stats here, and at some point tonight I expect combined stats to appear as well.

Thanks to all the teams who came to this tournament, and a lot of thanks to all the people who staffed.

As one of the coaches yesterday, just wanted to say thank you for a very well run tournament. The moderators were all excellent and the organizers kept it moving at a very nice pace. Overall, it was a great experience for our team.
