2015 NAQT Colorado State: April 11, Fairview HS, Boulder

On April 11, Fairview High School in Boulder, in conjunction with the University of Colorado, will hold Colorado’s first National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT) trivia tournament.

If you’re going to the Colorado Knowledge Bowl State Championship, this will be a good warmup and a chance to scope out the competition. If not, this is an additional opportunity to qualify for two more national trivia competitions.

About NAQT

NAQT is the nation’s largest trivia tournament, with nearly 300 teams competing each year at HSNCT in Chicago. This is the first time that an NAQT-affiliated event has been offered in Colorado and will allow the top 15% of teams to qualify to compete against the best teams in the nation.

NAQT is slightly different from knowledge bowl, which is more common in Colorado. An NAQT tournament consists of about a dozen games, each with two types of questions: tossups and bonuses. We’ll have a demonstration of how the format works at the start of the day, but feel free to check out:

Significant Differences Between Colorado Knowledge Bowl and NAQT

Tossups
Tossups Questions are worth either 10 or 15 points. 15 points are earned if the question is answered before the “power mark”, a point in the question known to the reader.
Whoever buzzes in is the only person that can answer the question. Only one person per team can answer. No collaborating, no consultation.
You may buzz in at any time during the tossup.
However, if you buzz in before the reader has finished the question, and you answer incorrectly, your team gets a penalty of -5 points.
You have two seconds to begin your answer. If you do not begin your answer, it is a ‘hesitate’, and the other team gets a chance to answer, if they haven’t already.
If the answer to the tossup is wrong, the second team has one chance to answer.
If both teams don’t answer correctly, the tossup is dead, and the next tossup is read.
Bonuses
Whichever teams wins the tossup question has the opportunity to answer bonus questions.
Bonus questions are multi-part questions, in which the team can earn 10, 20, or 30 points.
Conferring IS allowed on bonus questions.
The team captain, designated before the game, is responsible for answering bonus questions WITHIN 5 SECONDS of the end of that part of the question.
If a team answers part or all of a bonus question incorrectly, the other team DOES NOT get a chance to answer, and the round moves to the next tossup question.
Miscellaneous
Substitutions are allowed at the half time, over time, or time outs.

Tournament
==========
The tournament will be played Split Field Round Robin (SFRR) style, which involves teams being randomly placed into smaller Round Robin flights, splitting the flights, and playing another Round Robin with all new teams. A win counts for 1 point, and a loss for 0. There are no draws.

Each team is guaranteed at least 9 games, no matter the attendance. Depending on the number of teams attending, this number is subject to range between 9 and 14 games.

Fees
====
The school registration fee is $30, which covers school admission to the tournament and the admission of one team. The cost for a second team is $15, and for a third team, the cost of admission is $10. We ask that no school register more than three teams, as we have limited capacity and this is the first NAQT tournament in the state. We can offer discounts for schools that bring buzzer sets (any type is fine, including button and strip sets)--for each buzzer set, your school will receive a $5 discount on your overall admission fee.

Lunch
=====
Refreshments will be provided throughout the day, but we do expect the competition to run from approx. 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM, and Fairview HS is not within walking distance of many restaurants. As such, schools can either bring their own food, or eat the lunch provided by Fairview at the cost of $5 a lunch. The lunch provided by Fairview will likely be either pizza or a sack lunch type of meal. There is an option to register for meals in the registration form below.

Colorado held its first NAQT tournament on April 11 (hopefully the first of many). Congratulations to Fairview B, who won the tournament with an undefeated record:

This is awesome and a huge achievement. Fairview especially should be congratulated and lauded for hosting (I had heard Grand Junction kept planning on doing an NAQT tournament years ago, but I don't think it ever materialized). If only more quizbowlers in bad QB areas would do this!

How aware are these teams about the rest of quizbowl? Do they have links to this website and the many QB resources? Would they be interested in a package of new information about quizbowl? Might any of them be interested in hosting more tournaments and want more advice?

There are still many other AUK-dominated teams out there in CO--I think I collected about 70 emails of active teams that I could find a few years ago.
