IHBB Canadian National Championship (May 2) Wild Card Policy

Post by Great Bustard »

The International History Bee and Bowl is looking forward to its first-ever Canadian National Championships on Saturday, May 2 at Lisgar Collegiate Institute in Ottawa. As we only had one regional tournament in each area where tournaments took place in Canada, and many regions did not have any tournament, we will have a relatively lenient wild card policy for this year. This policy is detailed as follows:

1. History Bowl for schools that did not compete at Regionals, but are located within 200 kilometers of a regional site

For schools that did not compete at a nearby Regional site, but who have achieved success in quiz tournaments to some degree this year are encouraged to contact [email protected] if they are interested in a wild card bid. IHBB makes no promises here, but we are open to accepting bids from teams that are considered of a Nationals-level caliber within Canada, even if they were unable to compete at Regionals.

2. History Bowl for schools that did not compete at Regionals, but are not located within 200 kilometers of a regional site
Schools who did not have a reasonably accessible regional tournament will typically be given a wild card bid for at least one team per division. Such teams are encouraged to contact [email protected] if they are interested. If there is interested in bringing more teams, please let us know.

3. History Bowl for teams that did compete at Regionals
Teams who competed at Regionals but did not qualify, and who are interested in competing in the National Championships should email [email protected] as soon as possible. Please include mention of any other quiz tournament success this year. Teams who had at least 1 or 2 wins, teams who had a tough regional field, and teams with other extenuating circumstances (e.g. a top player was unable to make regionals) will be given due consideration. IHBB makes no guarantees regarding acceptance of wild card bids, but we encourage any interested schools to contact us.

4. History Bowl for teams in British Columbia
Since the Vancouver regional is just one week in advance of the National Championships, any team from British Columbia who is planning on competing at the Vancouver tournament can apply for an automatic wild card bid by emailing [email protected] Attendance at the Vancouver tournament is mandatory for teams requesting such a bid. Opus Academy students must play representing their respective schools at Nationals.

5. History Bee
No wild card berths will be issued for the History Bee. However, for students who did not compete at the Regional Championships in the History Bee, there will be a last chance qualifying round from 8:15-8:40am at Lisgar the day of the tournament (for all age divisions). Students who finish in the top half of this would then be welcome to compete at the National Championships of the History Bee later that day. It costs $15 to compete in the Last Chance Qualifying Round, and all interested students should be at Lisgar exactly at 8am to compete.
Students who competed in the Bee at Regionals or in the Last Chance Qualifier but did not qualify as well as students who did not compete at all in a Bee, are welcome to compete in the Consolation Bee (which is not open to students who did quailfy).
