North Carolina 2015-2016

Post by friendswithdave »

The North Carolina Association for Scholastic Activities has set dates for all NCASA quiz bowl events during the 2015-2016 school year.

Oct 17 - Fall Quiz Bowl Tournaments - see note below - DATE CHANGED 6/22/15
Jan 30 - Quiz Bowl Jamborees - kick-off to weekly quiz bowl meets
Mar 5 - Regional Quiz Bowl Tournaments - statewide qualifiers for State Final
Mar 19 - Quiz Bowl State Finals

NAQT Introductory Sets will be used for all high school events except the State Final which will use an NAQT Invitational Set. NAQT Middle School sets will be used for all middle school events.

NCASA will work with member schools interested in hosting tournaments on Oct 17. These will be completely independent tournaments run and administered by host schools. NCASA will help member schools with marketing and tournament organization by providing sample schedules, summary scoresheets, NAQT contacts, and promoting the tournament to member schools. However, these will not be NCASA tournaments and are therefore open to all schools.

The Jamborees, Regional, and State Tournaments are free and open to all NCASA member schools. The school membership fee for 2015-2016 is $200 per school plus $0.25 per enrolled student. School districts that register all secondary schools receive a 50% discount off the registration fee. Guilford, Durham, Iredell-Statesville, and Cumberland County are among those school districts who are expected to register all interested schools again this year.

We will provide additional details on host schools for all tournaments as they are established.

For Raleigh Charter's tournament on Nov. 14, we will be using a NAQT set, probably #150 so our tournament will be a qualifying tournament for nationals.

Good deal -- The Demon Deacon Challenge will be using NAQT's IS-152 for our 11/21 tournament. I'll post here when the official announcement goes up.

Cave Spring High School would also like to invite any NC teams that are within a short driving distance of Roanoke, VA to our two tournaments on October 24th and February 20th. The October 24th tournament is our CSI and will be using IS-148. We obviously would recommend attending the Quaker Bowl, which is running the same set, but if you are unable to attend on that weekend and wish to play on that set, try looking us up. The NCIS is our tournament on February 20th and we will be using our own housewrite. If anyone has any questions about either tournament or wish to register, just contact Bob Powers at [email protected]. Thanks!

Three NCASA member schools are planning to host the Fall Tournaments: Thomas Jefferson Classical, Union Pines High School, and High Point Central / Early College at Guilford. Additional hosts in the Triangle and Northeast are still being sought.

These tournaments are not sponsored or run by NCASA. However, we assist host schools in promoting their tournaments and providing logistical and planning support. Stay tuned for more information on fees, etc. We expect host schools will post on this page once registration and other details are determined.

Does anyone know anything about the Enloe tournament that is on the calendar for Sept. 26? I haven't heard anything about it. It feels a bit like the quiz bowl equivalent of vaporware

Betsy:
I've sent a couple of messages to Enloe with no response, and I haven't heard anything from them since we started the calendar over the summer. I'll assume if we don't hear anything by the end of this weekend, the tournament on September 26th is not happening.

I received an email from Celia Rowland around a week ago asking if she could mirror BISB for a tournament on either September 26 or October 10, so perhaps it is being delayed until October?

Bonfire of the Manatees at Raleigh Charter November 14

Post by betsynewmark »

This is to announce the Bonfire of the Manatees on November 14, 2015

Raleigh Charter High is pleased to announce that we will host the 8th annual Bonfire of the Manatees on Saturday, November 1, 2015. This is a high school Quiz Bowl tournament that will take place from 8:30 to 5:00 p.m., though we may well finish earlier. The tournament is open to any high school team(s) that wish to attend.

Affiliation: The tournament will use NAQT set #150 and will serve as an NAQT qualifier.

Format: The competition will be nine rounds; every team is guaranteed at least 6 rounds. We’ll decide on the exact playoff format once we see how many teams are signed up. All rounds will be played according to NAQT procedures, with 20 pyramid-style tossups and corresponding bonuses. We will play powers and negs, but there will be no bouncebacks on bonuses. As in years’ past, games will be Swiss-paired throughout the day using our automated scoring program. Trophies will be awarded to the two top teams and book prizes for the top ten individual scorers.

Registration: To register, please e-mail Betsy Newmark at [email protected] with the number of teams and buzzers you wish to bring, and an e-mail address where we may reliably contact you. Soon after, you should receive a confirmation email along with a packet of information regarding the tournament.

Fees: The fee per team will be $65, with a $10 discount for each fully functional buzzer system that has a control box and eight buzzers. Payment may be mailed either prior to November 14, or paid in person on the day of the tournament. Please make all checks out to Raleigh Charter High School.

Teams: There may be a maximum of six players on one team's roster, up to four of whom may play at one time, with no exceptions. If you bring more than six players, you must register a second team to have all of them play. There is a half-time substitution opportunity in each game. Each player may appear on only one team's roster throughout the day—no switching between the A and B teams, for example. Teams may also play shorthanded with fewer players.

Food: Neither breakfast nor lunch will be provided by the tournament. Further information regarding local food options will be provided along with the confirmation email sent to you after registration.

We hope to see your team at the Bonfire at the Manatees!

Registration for the NCASA Regional / State Quiz Bowl Tournament opens this Monday, January 18. Middle school and high school divisions will be contested. These tournaments are free and open to all 271 NCASA member schools. Given last year's participation and the growth in NCASA this year, we expect about 100 teams to compete. Non-member schools may join NCASA to participate in a Regional. The school registration fee is $200 per school plus $0.25 per enrolled student. New schools must complete NCASA school registration by the February 13 tournament registration deadline to be eligible to compete.

The Regional Tournaments are on March 5. The State Final is March 19 hosted by NCSSM in Durham.

Schools must compete at one of six Regional sites to qualify for the State Finals. Regionals will be hosted by the following schools:
- WEST: Hickory HS
- CHARLOTTE AREA: TBD
- TRIAD: TBD
- TRIANGLE: Ligon MS in Raleigh
- SANDHILLS: TBD
- EAST: Pactolus School in Greenville

Schools may also bring a B Team of students from any grade to Regionals.

We will use an NAQT Introductory set for Regionals and an NAQT Invitational set for the State Finals. Visit www.ncscholastic.org for more information or to register for NCASA membership or the tournament.
