Centennial Tournament Ellicott City,MD Sunday Nov 8,2015

Post by eseifte1 »

This is our first announcement for the CENTENNIAL HIGH SCHOOL TOURNAMENT in Ellicott City, Maryland to be held on Sunday, November 8, 2015 at 8:30 AM (one day after the SATs).

For our 11th annual tournament, we will be using NAQT IS-151A set. This question set is an INTRODUCTORY set written to accommodate new players, so this tournament will be ideal for teams new to quiz bowl or new members of established teams. These questions can also help to hone rapid buzzing skills for more experienced teams and players.

We are applying for Platinum Certification from PACE and we are using an NAQT set.
TRANSLATION: 25% of teams in the varsity field will be eligible for the PACE Nationals Chicago, IL. Based on prior years (field of 30 varsity), this will mean 8 teams. 15% of the total number of high school teams will be eligible for the NAQT Nationals (HSNCT) in Dallas, Texas. Based on prior years (field of 66), we anticipate 10 teams (all derived from the upper "varsity" bracket.

Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend, even the most experienced teams. Like last year, we are planning to have a novice field composed of teams with 9th and 10th graders or teams of any age less experienced to Quizbowl and a varsity field composed of experienced teams. The novice field will have its own trophies but will not be eligible for the NAQT and PACE championship tournaments. Obviously teams can elect to participate in the varsity regardless of players' age and experience. We are using this format in order to avoid the 660 to 10 scores in mismatched contests that are frustrating for all involved.

As we did last year we will group the MIDDLE SCHOOL teams into their own bracket or parallel competition!

We picked this date to avoid the snowmageddon we had 2 years ago.

LAST YEAR, 80 TEAMS SIGNED UP AND WE TURNED AWAY THE LATE REQUESTERS.

Like last year, we are expecting all teams to stay for the rounds after lunch, and we will require reregistration at lunch to verify afternoon participation.

Registration will begin at 8 a.m., and we will provide our traditional breakfast banquet. For those teams wishing to stay on site for lunch pizza will be sold at registration.

We will have a coaches/parents' round during lunch with fossils/minerals as prizes, the proceeds of which will be donated to the Howard County Special Olympics.

The cost for teams participating in the tournament is $75 for the first team and $65 for each extra team from the same school. Teams can bring a working buzzer for a $10 discount (but only one buzzer set per team entered).

Centennial High School is located at 4300 Centennial Lane, Ellicott City, MD 21042

To register, e-mail [email protected] with the number of teams AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, WHICH BRACKET (VARSITY, NOVICE, OR MIDDLE SCHOOL) YOU WANT TO BE IN, buzzers, e-mail address, and telephone number where we can contact you on the day of the tournament in case of inclement weather. Feel free to share this announcement with other teams that might be interested in attending.

We have received Gold Certification from PACE presumably because we are using an NAQT IS set.
TRANSLATION: 20% of teams in the varsity field will be eligible for the PACE Nationals Chicago, IL. Based on prior years (field of 30 varsity), this will mean 6 teams. 15% of the total number of high school teams will be eligible for the NAQT Nationals (HSNCT) in Dallas, Texas. With one month to go, we have more than 40 teams registered. Last year, we capped at 80 teams and I do not believe we should attempt more this year.
Please reserve your place with estimates and then confirm when we get closer to the date. We had last minute teams that could not get in last year.
We are sending out 60 snail mail invitations to potentially new teams who are unaware of hsquizbowl or who have not answered from our email list.

We have exceeded 60 teams registered and our snail mail invitations should be arriving at 60 schools not on our email list. Reserving a spot may be a good idea soon.
Clearly quizbowl interest is alive and thriving in the Baltimore DC metro region. Our thanks to interest also from PA and VA and beyond.

We have reached 80 teams. We will stop registration at midnight on Friday. We welcome teams onto a waiting list. Historically several teams have been notified off the waiting list due to last minute cancellations. We have 43 buzzers registered so far, which seems sufficient at this moment.

Assuming we hold to the current numbers with 30 Varsity and 36 Novice, (along with 24 Middle/Elementary), we would expect that NAQT will qualify 10 teams for Nationals in Dallas (15% of Varsity + Novice), but these 10 will come from the Varsity draw. In a rule change this year, PACE will also consider the total field. This means 13 (or maybe 14) teams eligible for Chicago (!) since we are Gold Certified (because of the A set) which means 20% of the 66 teams, but all from the Varsity field. As in prior years, we will fill cancellations off the wait list and use NHS students who never played quiz bowl for scab teams for same-day cancellations.
As in prior years, high scorers will receive fossils as prizes, as will the winners of the Coach's/Parents Round at lunch.
All teams are entitled to a printed set of questions at the end of the tournament. We will award trophies for the top 4 finishers in Varsity, Novice, and Middle divisions.

At the moment, our Varsity bracket is capped at 30. But we can still accept 3 or 4 teams in Novice. Middle School is also capped at 24.
Remember, seniors and juniors can play in Novice. The Novice designation implies that you have a team with not more than 21 PPB on most NAQT sets (if you know that) or just want to avoid getting trounced by the top predators in the Varsity field. Of course, there is no possibility of eligibility for National Tournaments from the Novice field.
