Mississippi 2015-16

Post by aeteacher »

On April 2nd, the State of Mississippi NAQT Championship will be held at Itawamba Agricultural High School. We have been assigned questions set IS-156. The competition is open to all schools in Mississippi. We are capping the tournament at 24 with preference given to A-teams. We will open it up to first-come first-serve for B-teams on Mar. 12th.

We at Itawamba are very pleased to have the chance to resurrect the NAQT state championship. Quiz bowl is recognized on a national level within the NAQT and PACE organizations. They allow for a unified system of competition with consistent rules. Their questions are pyramidal which is widely held within the quiz bowl community to be the fairest form of questioning. Sample questions can even be purchased at http://www.naqt.com or downloaded for free at http://www.quizbowlpackets.com .

A state championship has not been held in Mississippi since 2011 (https://www.naqt.com/stats/tournament-t ... nt_id=3646), and we at Itawamba really want to grow “good” quiz bowl within the state. This tournament can qualify the top 15% for NAQT nationals as well as small school nationals. In fact, several teams from Mississippi have qualified for nationals already through local tournaments (see below). We want this number to grow. It only helps in the nation’s view of the academics in Mississippi if we are consistently competing against the elite from around the country. We want quiz bowl to be a source of pride within all of our schools and within our state, and that is why we are glad to see a true state championship being held once again.

With that said, I encourage all schools with a quiz bowl team to sign up as soon as possible:

Location: Itawamba Agricultural High School, 11900 Hwy 25 South, Fulton, MS 38843

Tournament Director: Chris Johnson, [email protected]

Deadline to register: March 25th; B-teams and middle school teams will be added starting on Mar. 12th. The tournament is capped at 24 teams.

Cost: $65 per team; $5 discount per working buzzer set; $10 discount for over 100 miles travelled per Google maps (Minimum cost is $50 per team).

Awards: Trophies for 1st-4th place; Medals for individual top 10 high point scorers

Game play: Teams will be seeded in pools according to each team’s point per bonus in their 2015-16 NAQT competitions (if a team has not competed in a NAQT tournament this year, they will be seeded at random). There will be a min of 2 pools to a max of 4 pools depending upon the number of teams competing (max of 24 teams). Each team will play 5 preliminary games and then all teams will be seeded (determined by record, points per game, points per bonus) in a single-elimination tournament (complete format will be determined by the total number of teams registered). All stats will be kept and tallied throughout the competition. Readers for the tournament will be former quiz bowl players who have competed at nationals along with faculty members and local college professors from ICC.

Lunch: Due to the timing of the game play, we will sell pizza (2 slices) and drinks (soda and water) at lunch for $5. When you register, please notify us of any dietary restrictions and needs. We will do our best to accommodate.

Suggested hotels: We have a Holiday Inn Express and a Days Inn at Fulton. We are currently working on a deal for each establishment as well as coupons for our local restaurants.

Extras: We had hoped to include within your registration price a commemorative t-shirt. Community backing for that did not go as planned. We may have shirts available for sale on the day of the competition. Cost will be $15. Students are under no obligation to purchase these shirts. We will also have a hospitality room with coffee and snacks for the coaches along with selling snacks for team members.

With many teams withdrawing, we have settled the state tournament to be two pools of varsity and JV. We will play a round-robin within each and then seed based on records within those pools with varsity getting seeds #1-6 and then JV will be seeded #7-12 into a single-elimination tournament. A trophy will be given to the top JV team along with medals for the top 3 individual leading scorers based on their own JV tournament. The top 4 finishers from the single elimination tournament will receive state championship trophies. The top 10 varsity scorers will be recognized at the conclusion of the day as well.

Wow. The State of Mississippi successfully completed our first true state championship in 5 years. We at Itawamba are proud to have been able to host. Congratulations to our 2016 state champion .... Brandon High School and runner-up Itawamba AHS. Also placing third was Lamar and 4th was Tupelo Christian Prep.

We were also able to host the first ever JV state champion (9th grade to middle school), so we would like to congratulate Itawamba Middle for their undefeated efforts and to Jackson Prep Jr. High for finishing 2nd. Both teams advanced to the 2nd round of the all-team single-elimination tournament to finish top 8 in the state regardless of classification. Good job, teams.
