HSQBRank 2016-2017

Reminder: the address is at https://hsqbrank.com/

This is the seventh year of my rankings. The pre-season rankings will hopefully be done in the next week or two.

To also make myself question why I do this, I'm starting a clock to keep track of how much time I spend on this through the year. That way, I'll have a hard number to use when I mess something up in my life, so I can blame EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU.

CURRENT COUNT: NINETY EIGHT HOURS (as of 5/30)

Have fun and best of luck!

Four of the top 15 on the list competed in Glasgow over the weekend:

Dorman beat both DCC and Battle Ground in the re-bracketed top round robin.
Dunbar was 6th.

Did you calculate EFT adjustments for these rankings? Lisgar played the UOttawa mirror but their PPB from that doesn't seem to be included.

No EFT adjustment; going to hold off on including that for a little bit. I'm using stat adjustments from last year or estimates; I really need more data before I can do proper adjustments.

What about Penn Bowl? Will adjustments for that be forthcoming?

I didn't attend Penn Bowl, so I can't calculate an adjustment for Penn Bowl.

Oh, I didn't realize that's how you did it. So there never will be an adjustment for Penn Bowl?

I think that might have been a joke regarding the dismissal of criticisms about the main site's questions or logistics given by people who weren't at the tournament? Or perhaps I don't understand that you understand that?

For those wondering when the next update is: I need to finish applying for residencies first. Then I'll have enough time resume working on the rankings.

Wow that number sure has increased recently over the past month! I wonder if it has any correlation with an update I'm trying to get out that would include all tournaments played through the first weekend of February while also managing research and residency interviews???

Hey, that last sentence is itself a hint towards an answer regarding questions I've gotten multiple times that I don't feel like answering! Now I'm going to go to bed because sleep is my favorite byeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Neg Five tournaments you are missing, not including Illinois stuff that can be found at the link Ricky provided:
2016 IQBL Fall Open
Harvest Prep Fall
Shateyaronyah III
Singapore Fall Invitational 2016

Please double check to whatever extent is reasonable, but I believe that this and the IHSSBCA link are exactly what you are looking for.

Fremd only has points scored, which I can't do anything with. Thank you for helping with Huskie Bowl, though.

Do you happen to do a Small School Ranking for teams looking to compare themselves leading up to the SSNCT? Coming from a public school of less than 150 students in grades 10-12 (about 200 students altogether), I want to be able to compare my team to others small schools across the nation currently rather than having to fish out the small schools from the overall high school rankings. Hoping to make a run for a trophy at SSNCT this year. Thank you:)

Not at the present. If time allows for me to publish one, I will, but presently that's not an insignificant amount of time that I may or may not have depending on how my schedule turns out.

I have similar sentiments. However, it's not overly difficult to pinpoint some of the top small schools. The Preseason Poll thread, which conveniently has a Small School division, is a great start for this. It is important to note however that this poll does not distinguish between Traditional Public and Charter-and-Private Division schools.

Also, best of luck at your trophy run. I look forward to potentially seeing you and your team there.

P.S. Are you aware of the Very Small School division? Your low enrollment almost certainly qualifies you for this division as well.

I saw the award for the Best Very Small School being offered this year. It makes me wonder how they will go about awarding that since they said it would be determined by a separate tournament as well as the number of "very small" traditional public schools have registered already.

Hope to see your team in Rosemont as well! A little more than two months away!!!

Thank you for all your hard work, Mr. Fred Morlan! These rankings are excellent and will serve as a valuable resource for teams across the nation to evaluate how they size up against their competition. I know that Harrison Wang and his fearless Hinsdale Central team see their #31 rank as not only validation of their hard work this year but also further incentive to study even harder to perform well at nationals. Felicitations to all!

Twenty-seven teams eligible for the Very Small School title are currently registered.

We will run a distinct double-elimination playoff bracket on Sunday for the Very Small School title. (Note that Very Small Schools are eligible for the overall playoffs, so this will probably involve some Very Small Schools being slotted into the Very Small School playoffs after they are eliminated from contention for the overall title.)

Just tought I would ask: is there a way where NAQT could denote what schools are "Very Small Schools" on the current Field List (Like an asterik or other symbol by their name)? That way other Very Small Schools like mine can stay informed as to how many and what schools are currently in that particular field?

Done. Note that the lack of "VSS" does not necessarily mean the school is too big to be a Very Small School; there are some schools for which we don't yet have this year's data, so we're not sure yet whether they're Very Small. (But we'll figure it out before the tournament.)

To my knowledge, Camp Hill, at around 287 students in grades 10-12, qualifies for the VSS title, at least according to our coach Mr. Gianelli.

Mr. Morlan, have you thought about using more than just ppb to do rankings? Perhaps you could lower the number of teams ranked, but use a more holistic process to rank them. Your rankings are very important, as they are used to seed the PACE national championship, so its vital that they are as accurate as possible.

just because that's how PACE seeding works in Schweers' fantasy universe does not mean this is actually how PACE is seeded

You can try looking at the "bigger package" (powers per game, points per game, negs per game, G/N, P/N, etc...), not just ppb. You could also try getting regional coordinators in each area who could notify you if some team on the list has played without their best player or split (for example, on your most recent rankings, St. Johns moved to 17th place but the ppb used was from when Andy Huff and I, who are the two highest scorers on the team, split. Likewise, Taylor moved to 34th place but the ppb used was from when William wasn't playing). I know you're trying your best, and I'm not trying to criticize or demean you in any way; I'm just offering suggestions as to how you could improve the rankings.
