Cavalier Classic XIX (11/12/16, Charlottesville, VA)

Hello everyone! The Academic Competition Club at UVA will be hosting our annual fall tournament, the Cavalier Classic, on November 12th, 2016 using NAQT IS-160. We will not be using computational math tossups at this tournament, though computational math bonuses will still be in effect.

Location: This tournament will be held in New Cabell Hall, and meeting times/room locations will be announced closer to the tournament date.

Affiliation: The top 15% of the field will automatically qualify for the NAQT High School National Championship Tournament, which will take place this year in Atlanta, GA during Memorial Day Weekend, May 26-28, 2017. More information about HSNCT will be provided to teams at the tournament proper. This tournament has also received a Platinum Certification from the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence, or PACE. This qualifies the top 25% of teams to attend the National Scholastic Championship, which will take place this year at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare in Chicago, IL from June 10-11, 2017.

Parking: Because there will be a home football game on the day of Cavalier Classic, parking information will be sent out to attending teams before the day of the tournament. Expect parking to cost some non-zero amount, but also expect it to be within a 10-minute walk from our control room.

Team size: There can be a maximum number of 6 players on each team’s roster, with substitutions possible at half-time and between games. If you wish to bring 7 or 8 players, we ask that you register a second team and so on for anyone with larger numbers of players.

Food: There is a buffet-style dining hall near New Cabell Hall that will be open on this date. A list of other local food options will be available for each team on the day of the tournament itself. We will not be providing breakfast or lunch for teams.

Fee structure:
Base fee: $70 per team
Buzzer discount: $5 for each system on which the control box and 8 buzzers work.
Staff discount: $10 for a parent, coach, non-playing student, etc. To qualify for the discount, volunteer staffers must stay through all games, not including finals.
Travel discount (150 miles or more, one way): $10
Minimum fee: $50

To official register for this tournament, or if you have any questions concerning the tournament, please email me, Eric Xu, at exx8f@virginia.edu. Checks should be made out to “Academic Competition Club,” though we can also accept cash. Please pay either in advance or, preferably, on the day of the tournament. If you wish to pay in advance, please indicate this in your registration and I will send you an address. Likewise, please let me know if you will need an invoice.

The field cap is currently set at 40 teams.

We hope to see you all in November!

We're at over half of our field cap with exactly a month to go before the tournament, so get your submissions in now! We're sending out a massive number of invitations to VHSL-only schools imminently to try and expand the field ever further, so get your registrations in before that comes.

As a side note, we've also obtained PACE Platinum Certification, which means that the top 25% of teams attending will qualify for PACE NSC in Chicago, IL.

Due to high levels of demand, we are expanding the field to 40 teams. Can't wait to see everyone in Charlottesville in a few weeks!

Every team that is currently registered should have received an email with logistics information from me sometime over the past few days. We will be holding registration in New Cabell Hall Room 332 from 8:00 to 8:30 AM, with matches starting promptly at 8:45 AM.
