2016 Autumn Classic at the University of Michigan (12/3/16)

Post by Kilroy Was Here » Thu Sep 08, 2016 7:04 pm

Michigan Academic Competitions is pleased to again be hosting its annual Autumn Classic, which will take place on Saturday, December 3rd, 2016.

Please note that we will be having an initial field cap of 32 teams; the cap may increase depending on the availability of staffers. Nevertheless, it is in your best interest to register as early as possible!

Location and Schedule
We will begin registration at 8:15 a.m. and hold a mandatory meeting for players and coaches at 8:45 a.m. Rounds will begin at 9:00 a.m. and continue through the morning and early afternoon with a lunch break around 1:00 p.m. Playoffs and a brief awards ceremony will follow, and we expect to finish no later than 6:00 p.m. The tournament will be held on the second floor of Mason Hall on the University of Michigan’s Central Campus, just like in years past. More specifics on this will be sent out as the tournament date approaches.

The tournament schedule will incorporate a pooled round robin for preliminary play, after which teams that qualify for the playoffs will play in a double elimination bracket.

Question Set
We will be using NAQT's IS-162. As a result, teams entering the 2016 Autumn Classic will have a chance to qualify for the 2017 NAQT High School National Championship Tournament.

We will be following NAQT rules, except we will be skipping computational math tossups. We will be playing timed rounds.

Fees and Discounts

+$90: first team
+$70: each additional team from a school
-$10: discount for a fully functioning buzzer system (max 2 per school)
-$5: early bird discount for registering by 5 PM, November 13th (discount is per team registered)
-$10: new program discount** (discount is per team registered)
-$10: distance discount for 100-275 miles driven*** (discount is per team registered)
-$50: extreme distance discount for over 275 miles driven*** (discount is per team registered)
Minimum entry fee per team is $0

** If your school has not participated in a University of Michigan tournament within the past two years, then you are eligible for this discount.
*** Distances are determined as based on distance one way from your school to the tournament site according to maps.google.com.

Checks should be made out to "Michigan Academic Competitions." While we prefer that you bring them to the tournament and hand them in at registration, if this is not possible, you can mail the check to:

Michigan Academic Competitions
C/O The University Activities Center
4002 Michigan Union
530 S State St
Ann Arbor MI 48109-1349

Registration
To register, either sign up using this form or send an e-mail to parksgc@umich.edu that includes your name, school, number of teams, number of buzzers you can bring, a phone number, and a confirmation e-mail address. Please mention in the subject of your Email that you are registering for this tournament. Please note that the registration forms on the team website are no longer valid. If your registration e-mail does not include ALL of this information, you will not be officially registered and thus will not be guaranteed a spot in the field. You can register as many teams as you like, but we will only take two per school at the moment while other teams will be waitlisted when our staffing situation is clearer.

When we receive your registration, we will send you an e-mail calculating your fee. If you note an error in the calculations, or if we fail to send you this notice promptly, please e-mail us and let us know. Once we receive your school's entry, we will send you a confirmation, area maps and directions, tournament rules, and other useful information.

We hope to see you on December 3rd!

"Aragorn was the famed king of Gondor, while the Iberian kingdom was Aragon. Both parties were aware of this coincidence: we have a journal entry from Aragorn that expresses his anger at receiving mail meant for King Peter IV of Aragon for the umpteenth time."~ CommodoreCoCo

The field above has been updated! We are now at our field cap and have a decent waitlist. It's likely we will expand our field, so keep the registrations coming.

We're down to 28 teams with just over a week to go. If you're still interested, please register ASAP. I'll be moving teams off the waitlist starting Wednesday.
