SoCal State Championship (3/25/17) @ Westview HS

Post by rahulkeyal »

Westview High School is pleased to announce the Southern California State Championship, or SoCal State Champs, a high school tournament co-directed by Kevin Yu and Rahul Keyal.

DATE/TIME: SoCal State Champs shall take place on Saturday, March 25th, 2017. Check-in shall begin at 8:00 A.M., and matches shall begin promptly at 9:00 A.M.

LOCATION: SoCal State Champs shall take place on the campus of Westview High School, located at 13500 Camino del Sur, San Diego, CA 92129. Vehicles may park in either lot and persons may enter the campus through the front gates. Matches shall take place in the classrooms in the J and L buildings. A map of the campus can be found here.

REGISTRATION: Teams may register by filling out the following form or by emailing [email protected] with the following information: (1) the school's name, (2) the number of teams, (3) the number of buzzers, (4) the number of moderators. There will be a preliminary field cap of 30 teams, with additional teams being placed on a waitlist. Registrations shall be confirmed with a reply email. Replying to this thread will not register a team. The registration fee may be paid on-site with either cash or check. Please make all checks payable to Westview Quizbowl.

PRICING:

$80 for the first team, $70 for subsequent teams

DISCOUNTS:
- $40 for schools that have played less than 3 tournaments in the past year (since March 25th, 2016)
- $5 per working buzzer system (must accommodate at least eight players)
- $10 per experienced moderator
- $5 per 50 miles traveled one-way per school

Minimum fee: $60 a team

TOURNAMENT FORMAT: The tournament will use the NAQT IS-166 set and shall adhere to official NAQT rules, with the exception that matches shall be run as untimed halves of ten questions each. In addition, ACF rules will be followed regarding timing and tiebreakers. A preliminary round robin in the morning shall be followed by round robin playoffs in the afternoon based on win-loss records. Ties shall be resolved on the basis of points per bonus within brackets, and ties crossing different brackets shall be resolved on the basis of points per game.

Note: To make things a bit more excited for this year's Southern California State Championships, we will be awarding the top JV team in addition to the first and second place teams. While the tournament itself will be in a single field, the highest placing team that meets either of the below qualifications will be recognized:

The team is composed solely of players who:
1) did not play a tournament before March 25th, 2016
AND/OR
2) are a sophomore, freshman, or below

This does not affect the official placings of the tournament and is not in any way affiliated with NAQT.

As stated in the NAQT HSNCT (High School National Championship Tournament) qualification rules, the top 15% of the field will qualify for the 2017 HSNCT held in Atlanta, Georgia. We have also received Platinum Certification by PACE, meaning the top 25% of the field will qualify for the PACE NSC (National Scholastic Competition) held in Chicago, Illinois.

FOOD: A light breakfast shall be provided in the lobby, and eateries exist within a comfortable walking distance of the campus. Food options are within a comfortable 5-10 minute walking distance and include places such as Cotijas, Rubio’s, Subway, Pick Up Stix, Luna Grill, Peet’s Coffee & Tea, etc.

INQUIRIES: Any inquiries can be resolved through emailing [email protected].
