Cupola Cup II @ NCSSM - Durham, NC (4/1/2017)

Postby dragonx47 » Sat Feb 18, 2017 2:06 pm

The North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics will be hosting the second annual Cupola Cup on Saturday, April 1, 2017. This is a high school Quiz Bowl tournament that will take place from 8:30 to 4:30 p.m. The tournament is open to any high school team(s) that wish to attend who have not played the set.

Affiliation: The tournament will be mirroring the Yale BHSAT XXVI set. We are currently seeking PACE certification. The last tournament we ran in the fall received Platinum certification, and we expect that to happen again.

Format: The tournament size will be initially capped at 16 teams. The competition will be nine rounds, and each team is guaranteed the full nine rounds. We’ll decide on the exact playoff format once we see how many teams are signed up. All rounds will be played according to NAQT procedures, with 20 pyramid-style tossups and corresponding bonuses. We will play with powers and negs, but there will be no bouncebacks on bonuses. A more comprehensive list of rules regarding tiebreakers and such will be e-mailed later.

Registration: To register, please e-mail Kevin Zhou at zhou17k@ncssm.edu with the number of teams, staffers, and buzzers you wish to bring, and an e-mail address where we may reliably contact you. Soon after, you will receive a confirmation email along information regarding the tournament. If we are close or at capacity, priority will be given to A teams.

Fees: The fee per team will be $65 for the first team, and $60 for each team thereafter. There will be a $5 discount for each fully functional buzzer system that has a control box and eight buzzers, and a $10 discount for each staffer(must be well-versed with the rules and stay for the entirety of the tournament). The minimum fee is $40 per team.

The fee will be paid in person on the day of the tournament. Please make all checks out to "NCSSM SCSSI".

Teams: There may be a maximum of six players on one team's roster, up to four of whom may play at one time, with no exceptions. If you bring more than six players, you must register a second team to have all of them play. There is a half-time substitution opportunity in each game. Each player may appear on only one team's roster throughout the day—no switching between the A and B teams, for example. Teams may also play shorthanded with fewer players.

Food: Neither breakfast nor lunch will be provided by the tournament. However, 9th Street is a 10-15 minute walk and has a large variety of food options.

We hope to see your team at Cupola Cup II!
