Bardbowl I @ BHSEC Manhattan, New York, NY (2/10/18)
Posted: Tue Oct 03, 2017 4:20 pm
Hello all! It is my pleasure to announce that Bard High School Early College (BHSEC) Manhattan will be hosting Bardbowl I on Saturday, February 10th, 2018, using the NAQT 173-A question set. This may be a bit premature in terms of a forum post, but since we’ve already gotten several registrations, we’ve decided to go ahead and put this out there. Since we are a fairly small team, if any NYC area staffers would volunteer to help out, that would be much appreciated. Currently, we are issuing a soft field cap at 24 teams, however we do have room to expand if there is enough interest. If you have any questions, please email [email protected].
Registration and Fees:
First team: $70
Each subsequent team: $65
Buzzer discount: -$5
Staffer discount: -$10
New to NAQT: -$20
Minimum charge per team: $50 ($35 for new to NAQT teams)

Rules:
Teams will play in round-robin preliminary pools in order to qualify for playoff rounds after lunch. Those who do not qualify will play consolation rounds. The tournament will operate using NAQT rules, with the following exceptions:
Rounds will be untimed and will consist of twenty tossups and twenty bonuses.
There will be no computational math bonuses or tossups.
We will be using ACF timing rules for answering: (available here at https://acf-quizbowl.com/official-gameplay-rules/) 5 seconds for answering tossups and bonuses, as well as 5 seconds before a tossup goes dead after being read, etc.
Logistics:
Location:
The tournament will be held at BHSEC Manhattan, at 525 East Houston Street, 10003, New York, NY. The entrance to the school is on Mangin Street, the last street heading east before the FDR Drive.
Check In:
Check in will begin at 8:00 AM, and will close at 8:45 AM. The first match will begin at 9:00 AM.
Directions via Car:
If approaching from the North, South, or East, simply make your way to the FDR Drive, exit at the Houston Street exit, make the first left onto Baruch Place, turn left onto Stanton, and then left again onto Mangin, and the school entrance should be on your left.
If approaching from the West, take exit 5 (Canal Street) off of the Holland Tunnel, head east until West Broadway (2 blocks) and make a left, then make a right on Houston and drive east until the corner of Mangin and Houston.
Parking:
As the majority of residents around BHSEC park in housing project lots, street parking is more readily available than in other parts of Manhattan. However, we still suggest you leave some extra time to find parking in case complications arise.
Directions via Public Transit:
There are several ways to get to BHSEC via public transportation. Two buses stop directly outside the school. The M21 runs east along Houston, connecting with the 1 train at Houston Street, the B, D, F, M, and 6 at Broadway Lafayette/Bleecker Street and the F at 2nd Avenue. The M14D runs eastward along 14th Street before heading down Avenues C and D to BHSEC. It connects to the A, C, E, B, D, L at 14th Street and 8th Avenue, the 1, 2, 3 at 14th Street and 7th Avenue, the F, M, L, at 14th Street and 6th Avenue, the N, Q, R, W, 4, 5, 6, L, at 14th Street-Union Square at 14th and Broadway as well as 14th and 4th Avenue (depending on your exit) and the L at 14th Street and 3rd Avenue as well as at 14th Street and 1st Avenue. As you can probably tell, the M14D has many more connections and also stops very frequently, so we suggest you take that bus over the M21. Alternatively, the school is about a mile walk from the Delancey Street station (F, J, Z, M) and the 2nd Avenue Station (F). We do it every day, you can too!
Lunch:
Teams will have around an hour for lunch. Lunch options around the school are somewhat limited, so we strongly suggest that you pack your own lunch if the following options do not appeal to you: a Halal Food truck, a (very good and very cheap) pizzeria with classic pies as well as a rotating selection of pan-Latin American entrees, a bodega with deli sandwiches, and a supermarket with more deli sandwiches. A map of these places will be available at the tournament. Pizza lunch will be provided for staffers only.
