Scarlet Knight Winter @ Rutgers (01/27/18)

Post by Dead Parrot »

Rutgers University-New Brunswick will be hosting the Scarlet Knight Winter Invitational Tournament on 01/27/2018. It will be run on Maggie Walker's GSAC.

Field Size: There is a field cap of 21 teams. In order to ensure that as many schools get to participate as possible, the first three teams of all schools that register will be entered into the field and subsequent teams will be added to a wait-list. Teams will be limited to rosters of six players.

Registration and Fees:
Base fee: $80 for your first team, $75 for additional teams
Buzzer discount: -$5
Staffer discount: -$10
The minimum fee per team is $50.

To register, please fill out this form.

Please do not hesitate to email us if you have questions at [email protected].

Payment: All teams must pay by the day of the tournament. Teams that do not will be charged a $25 penalty fee. We will accept either cash or checks. No other form of payment will be accepted. All checks must be made out to “Rutgers University Academic Team”. If your school requires an invoice for payment, please get in touch with us at the email address above.

Location: The tournament will be held in Scott Hall (43 College Avenue, New Brunswick, NJ) on the College Avenue campus of Rutgers-New Brunswick.

Transportation and Parking: Teams driving to the tournament who wish to park on campus must purchase a $5 parking permit here (permits can only be purchased online on weekdays from 8am to 5pm), and use this parking deck (622 George Street, New Brunswick, NJ). Alternatively, teams can park in these off-campus facilities provided by the City of New Brunswick for a slightly higher fee. Scott Hall is also within walking distance of the New Brunswick NJ Transit station on the Northeast Corridor Line.

Schedule: Registration will begin in Scott Hall at 8am and all teams should arrive at 8:30am at the latest. There will be opening announcements at 8:45am, and we hope to begin Round 1 as close to 9am as possible. The exact format will be determined by the final field size, but in any case, teams will be placed in preliminary brackets for morning rounds and then reseeded into playoff and consolation brackets in the afternoon. All teams will be guaranteed at least eight rounds in total.

Food: Neither breakfast nor lunch will be provided at the tournament. We will supply a list of places to eat during the lunch break.

We hope to see you all in New Brunswick in January!

With three and a half weeks to go, we have hit our field cap of 16 teams, so any further sign-ups will be put on a waitlist. We may be able to expand the field at a later date.
We have also received Platinum certification from PACE, which means that teams who finish in the top 25% of teams at this tournament will qualify for the National Scholastic Championship in Reston, VA in June.

We have expanded the field to 19 teams, which means we are once again at full capacity with an empty waitlist.

EDIT: We have now expanded to 20 teams.

EDIT: We have now expanded to the final size of 21 teams.

David, will each team get a copy of all of the questions, either in paper or electronic format, after the tournament is over, or after other mirroring tournaments are complete?

In the interest of trying to actually get schools to like pyramidal quizbowl and not go back to the massive modified Jeopardy shadow circuit in NJ, perhaps it would make sense to encourage a school that is making its quizbowl debut (Lyndhurst) to attend a more difficulty and field-appropriate event.

It's pretty incredible that I don't think there's been an event in NJ with a novice bracket or a novice-only tournament in the past few years. Princeton did split standard-competitive this year, but that's it. Perhaps that's why the largest events in NJ are still the 50-60-team modified Jeopardy dreck.

not to take away from Rutgers and this tournament, but there are plenty of smaller novice-set tournaments in the area, even Rutgers hosted one last spring. Look in the NJ/NY/PA discussion page for a complete list.

A novice set (I assume you mean IS-A set, since the last few SCOP and the PA novice sets have not been mirrored within NJ) implies neither a novice-only tournament nor a novice bracket. When attempting to recruit most schools (read: not the supermagnets or top university town schools) to pyramidal quizbowl, it often helps to have opportunities for those teams to do more than finish in the bottom third of a tournament, which is what novice tournaments and brackets do. Given far more schools in New Jersey play non-pyramidal quizbowl than pyramidal quizbowl, it would be nice to try to change that and get more teams playing pyramidal permanently. The standard NJ tournament (regardless of set) wherein a few non-circuit schools show up each time and usually get trounced isn't a very effective way to accomplish that goal.

I emailed Maggie Walker and they said that the set will be posted after all mirrors are complete. They did ask us not to distribute electronic copies out of concern for question security and also advised us not to distribute paper copies.

To clarify, we're fine with tournaments who make paper copies for readers to distribute those to teams after tournaments, since there's no reason they shouldn't be able to. But whether or not a tournament wants to go to the effort and cost of printing copies otherwise is the discretion of the TD. Teams can request to see specific questions by joining the private discussion forum, and as David said, the set will definitely be posted at the end of the season!

Congratulations to High Tech A, who cleared the field to go 11-0 on the day and win the tournament! They are joined by Downingtown STEM, Wilmington Charter, High Tech B, and East Brunswick A in qualifying for the PACE NSC in Reston, VA in June. Emmett will post complete stats in the link above later tonight. Thanks to everybody for coming out, and we hope to see you at Rutgers again soon!
