SCOP Novice at Swarthmore College: January 27

Post by Thaumatibis gigantea »

Swarthmore College Quizbowl is pleased to announce that we will be hosting Swarthmore Novice, a high school-tournament on Saturday, January 27, 2018. This tournament will use the SCOP Novice set. Details on the set can be found here.

Registration: Registration can be completed at this link. If you have any questions regarding registration, please e-mail me at [email protected]. We will be instituting a hard field cap of 18 teams and will initially limit each school to 2 teams plus as many waitlist teams as desired.

We also ask that experienced teams please use discretion in choosing to attend this tournament and use this opportunity to give older players staffing experience if bringing a team of younger players.

Registration Fees:
$65 for first team / $55 for each additional team
-$10 for each working buzzer system
-$15 for each experienced staffer
Minimum fee per team: $30

Tournament Format and Logistics:
Our tournament format will depend on the number of teams, but we anticipate using a two-stage group system, and guaranteeing all teams that stay to the tournament's conclusion at least 8 games.
Rounds will follow standard format: consisting of 20 tossups, for 15 point powers and -5 point negs.

Registration will begin at 8 am and matches will start at 9 am. The majority of this tournament will take place in Kohlberg Hall, in the center of campus. Free guest parking is available in either Whittier Lot or Benjamin West. The town of Swarthmore, a ten-minute walk from Kohlberg Hall, offers several options for lunch. Alternatively, there are numerous restaurants within a 10 minute drive of campus along Baltimore Pike.

If you have any questions, feel free to post in this thread, or email me at [email protected].

Registered Teams (teams/buzzers/staffers):
Friends Select (3/3/2)
Bodine High School for International Affairs (1/1/0)
Bethlehem Catholic (1/0/0)
Church Farm School (1/0/0)
Downingtown East (1/1/1)
Carver (3/1/1)
Archbishop Ryan High School (1/0/0)
Archbishop Wood (1/0/0)

The field list is now up-to-date: any teams still interested who have not yet contacted me, please do so by January 15th so I may open the waitlist.

Complete stats are up. Congratulations to Bethlehem Catholic for finishing in first, and Downingtown East and Archbishop Ryan for a tie in 2nd place. We apologize for the mix-up regarding the tiebreaker and appreciate your understanding.

Thank you especially to Brian from Carver; Ian, Saras, and Josh from Friends Select; Jackie from Downingtown East; and Antonio and Chris from Penn for their help as staffers.
