High Technology High School is pleased to announce our fourth annual Quiz Bowl Invitational Tournament (QuBIT IV), which will take place on Saturday, February 24th, 2018. We'll be mirroring the FACTS set by TJHSST and Charter.

QuBIT IV will be held at High Technology High School, 765 Newman Springs Road, Lincroft, NJ 07738. Free Parking will be available in our lot, as well as in Brookdale Community College, parking lot # 4.

On the day of the tournament, teams can sign in from 8:00 AM to 8:30 AM. The first round will start at 8:45 AM.

There will be trophies for the top four teams, as well as book prizes for the top ten scorers in the prelims.

Registration:

Registration for this tournament will only be accepted through this form, which will be kept open until the end of February 22nd.

Note: Our school district requests a certificate of insurance from each participating school before the day of competition. This no-cost certificate of insurance is requested through your school business office, asking your insurance company to issue a certificate indicating that the students are covered by insurance when participating at QuBIT. Further details regarding this will be sent after you register for the tournament.

Question Set:

We will be mirroring the FACTS set. More information can be found here.

Format

Registration will be capped at 24 teams for now, and I am currently limited the field to three teams per school. If there is enough demand, we may expand the field at a later date.

Prelims will have four groups of six teams, with each team playing five games before lunch. After lunch, playoffs will be three groups of eight. Wins and losses in the morning will carry over to the afternoon, so each team is guaranteed six playoff rounds. Advantage finals will then be played between the top two teams to determine the overall champion.

Fee Structure:

$80 for the first team, with $75 for each additional team. (No more than six players per team; only four players playing at a time).
-$5 per working buzzer system, no limit.
-$10 per moderator, no limit.
Minimum fee of $50 per team.

Payment:

Make all checks out to “High Tech Student Activities Account.” We prefer payment on the day of the tournament, but if this is against your school's policy, then feel free to mail them to High Tech’s address, as listed above. If you plan mailing a check to us, have "Attention: Dr. R. Eng" on the envelope to ensure the check gets to the right place. We also accept cash. No other forms of payment will be accepted.

Food:

A complimentary breakfast of bagels and juice will be provided to all teams. For lunch, we would prefer if teams stayed on-site in order to prevent delays, but we will also distribute a list of local eateries. We will be offering pizza for sale at lunch at $12 a pie. If you would like to order, please indicate the number of pies on the Google form. Beverages will also be available for purchase at lunch.

If you have any questions about this tournament, please contact me at [email protected] or post below.

We look forward to seeing you in February!

The field for QuBIT has filled up, so we will now be allowing schools to register a fourth team for the waitlist. We will expand the field if there is enough interest, so make sure you fill out the form to get first dibs if those spots open up!

Congratulations to Lehigh Valley for winning QuBIT IV after playing two games of an advantaged final in their favor against Downingtown STEM to win the tournament! Alex Schimdt's performance today was unreal, scoring a incredible 176 ppg in prelims. Aurora Leigh of Not Spuyten Duyvil also put in an impressive solo performance, scoring 134 ppg in prelims and beating Alex in an incredible almost 1 on 1 match during playoffs. I want to thank all the teams that competed today for coming, as well as having to deal with the problems we had that had to do with the set today. I'm also incredibly thankful to the all High Tech kids: both members and non-members of the Academic Team, as well as the great parent and coach readers like Mr. Shatan, Mr. Kirk, Mr. Rabner, and Mr. Schmidt, for allowing us to finish 13 rounds from 9:15 to 6:00, which could be a QuBIT record.

I'd now also like to take a minute to address the elephant in the room in regards to this tournament. Getting up at 5:40 this morning and realizing we still did not have the FACTS packets after having them not delivered on time as promised almost a dozen times is an incredibly stressful experience I do not want to repeat. I frankly also expected a better set from teams as good as Charter and TJ. Even when we did get the packets, there were major problems with the set, including duplicated questions, questionable answerlines and firstlines, and that the second finals packet was being written/edited/packetized as the first part of the advantaged final was being played. That being I would like to thank the people on FACTS, especially Sohum Shenoy, Ryan Golant, and Jakob Myers for providing live support, question editing, and question replacement throughout the tournament and leading up to it. They potentially saved the entire tournament and saved us a lot of headaches during it.

Full stats should be uploaded as well, so feel free to look at them and direct any and all questions about them or the tournament to [email protected].

Thanks again for attending and competing!

I will speak for myself first as I had an inexcusable role in the breakdown, however my words do not represent the viewpoint of any other members of the FACTS team; I was the sole writer for humanities questions for the 5 Charter packets that were agreed upon (due to the mysterious incident of all the old Charter team members basically all giving up on qb this year), and I had written them a few months ago with some literature left unwritten because of my partial negligence and mostly lack of confidence in my literature abilities (#1 on my list of negligent behaviors) I finished writing these and then I went on hiatus (due to this being my first time writing a significant amount of quizbowl questions and thus causing my brain to hurt) until the editors can edit them and put them into packets, end result: all of my literature questions were unedited due to editorial shirking and a few other questions also needed to be checked. I spend the rest of my school year breezing through my very "enjoyable" junior year until February (I still did not have a major role then).

The day before the tournament, I figured that most of the packets should be done then, so I checked the packets. After realizing that no packets were finished, I decided to help my teammate, Sohum, with putting questions into the packets. That took us a good 4 hours with a complicated system of sourcing questions and QA work. Packetizing was the main reason that sending packets took so long, but it was also the unwritten questions. My thinking was that TJ would have enough extra lit to cover for my relative dearth of it, and if they didn't, someone (the category editor) would have told me (I realized that I should have checked just in case, this is #2 on my list of negligent behaviors). Turns out there were approximately 20 unwritten questions needed during playoffs so we needed to have TJ and the editors write those. I couldn't feasibly do anything at this point so I just tried to finish our own tournament (#3). And yes, I realize that all of this could have been easily solved if I or someone else had just packetized all of the questions a few days before the tournament instead of doing it at the last minute (#4)

After that story, I would like to offer a personal apology towards high tech and the teams attending this tournament. I sincerely apologize for my lack of foresight and waiting until the last minute to finish goals that should have been complete a week ago. However, I must also thank the editors for coming through at the most important hours to creating high quality questions under such time constraints and also TJ for writing some questions that I should have written a long time ago. I hope this tournament still has bought some enjoyment to the people who attended and I wish that this packet set can finally reach the excellent quality that should be expected from it.

Who was responsible for making sure this set would be completed on time? You make it sound like there was very little communication between Charter and TJ....

Also, I really hope a discussion forum is created for this set.

With QuBIT now two days in the past, I would like to offer one final apology to the hosts at High Tech (especially Doug) and to any teams that may have had a subpar experience playing the tournament. As the head editor of FACTS, I could’ve done much more to ensure that the writers, the other editors, and I myself finished everything days—if not weeks—in advance of QuBIT; at the very least, I could’ve started packetizing much earlier so as to prevent some of the sloppy packetization errors that were present in the final set. I am still not sure how we ended up with a dearth of questions at the start of the tournament, but that should never have happened. That being said, I would like to sincerely thank Doug for bearing with us on the day of the tournament, despite the exorbitant amount of undue stress we put him through; despite our inexcusable mistakes, he still managed to pull off a successful tournament.

A private discussion forum should be up shortly (since it’s been a few days since we requested one), and we welcome any and all feedback regarding the set. We’ve already started soliciting feedback from a few people who played QuBIT, and we’ve already started incorporating this feedback, plus additional edits, into FACTS. I’d especially like to thank Doug, Julia Tong, Chloe Levine, Max Shatan, and Michael Li for offering some incredibly helpful criticism on our questions. Despite the hiccups experienced at QuBIT (for which I cannot apologize enough), I can ensure the other FACTS mirror sites that they will receive a much more polished and much more enjoyable version of FACTS.

Following the edits, can we say that the subsequent mirrors will be playing...alternative FACTS?
