The UCLA College Bowl Club is pleased to announce:
***The California Invitational of California***
This tournament will be a loose mirror [we're stealing their name] of the
similarly named California Invitational in Pennsylvania. It will use the
same set, IS-58, which has not been used for any Southern California
tournaments [however, due to Edison's presumed attendance of the Northern
California {the Menlo invitational} tourney using this packet set, the
players participating on that team would be ineligible to come].
DATE: The tournament will be held on Saturday, May 13, which is after AP
exams and SAT dates. If there is enough clamor to move the date back, we
will move it to May 20.
FORMAT: We are looking at this tournament as preparation for Southern
California teams attending Nationals, and therefore we would like to
run a timed tournament. If there are any concerns about this, please do
e-mail me.
PRICING STRUCTURE:
Base fee = $100
-$5 for a fully-functional buzzer system (Must have at least four working
buzzers on both sides)
-$5 for a functional countdown clock or timer (maximum of 3, unless we
contact you about needing more)
-$10 for a pre-approved moderator
-$10 for the second team from a school
-$20 for the third (or additional) team from a school
+$25 if you wish to purchase a copy of the questions after the tournament
Please make checks payable to "College Bowl Club of UCLA." Please do not
make a check out to any other person or entity, including "UCLA Quiz Bowl,"
as we cannot cash those checks. An address will be provided shortly for
those of you who wish to mail your checks in advance.
The cap is unofficially going to be set at twenty teams, but we will
see about being able to accommodate further teams. Teams who have already
qualified for NAQT HSNCT will be given priority, but we encourage all to
come.
The tournament director is Charles Meigs. If you are interested in
attending, please e-mail Charles at [email protected] with the following
information:
1) Your school's name
2) Coach (or representative) name and e-mail address
3) The number of teams you are bringing
4) The number of buzzer systems, clocks and/or moderators you would like to
bring
Updates about the tournament will primarily be through the Southern
California High School Quiz Bowl Mailing List; however, they should
also be posted online. Our club website is http://quizbowl.bol.ucla.edu. A
link should become available once this announcement has been posted.
If you have any questions about any of this, please e-mail [email protected].
Thanks and hope to see you in May,
Charles Meigs

I'll relay the announcement on Tuesady to our coach, who is currently in D.C. for Sci Bowl Nationals, but I don't know if we can come up with the money anyway; we have to pay for NAQT HSNCT out of pocket. Also, this may be irrelevant since, as I mentioned, I don't know if we can come, but our prom is the 13th, as are Ocean Sci Nats, so I know we wouldn't be coming in any case if it was held that day.

Just as an addendum to my previous post: I talked to my teammates and coach and Santa Monica will be attending with at least one probably two teams if the tournament is moved to the 20th. If it remains on the 13th then, as I said before, we will not be attending at all. Incidentally, as mentioned above, it would be nice if we could see all the SoCal teams (excluding Edison) that are attending nationals there.

It's unfortunate that we couldn't attend; we very much enjoy playing at UCLA's tournaments.
Just out of curiosity, Charles, how exactly did you know that we attended the Stanford-Menlo tournament? Does NAQT tell you who has played the packets, or did someone from Stanford let you know?

I checked Stanford college bowl's website beforehand-they had a field listed for the Menlo tournament and Edison was listed on the field.
Brief results from the tournament:
San Dieguito defeated Arcadia A to win the overall title. Rancho Bernardo finished third, and Torrey Pines finished fourth. After (the penultimate) round 11, Rancho Bernardo and San Dieguito had one loss, while Torrey and Arcadia had two losses. Arcadia A beat Rancho Bernardo, while San Dieguito beat Torrey Pines to avoid a four-way tie for first place. Arcadia advanced to an advantaged final based on their head-to-head victory over Rancho Bernardo. In game 1 of the final, Arcadia A led going into tossup 24, but a neg in San Dieguito's correct answering of the tossup led San Dieguito to a 300-285 (may not be exactly right, as the stats are at my home) victory.
High scorers were Jeff from Rancho Bernardo, Jeff from Los Altos, Branwell from Arcadia A. I'll update this post later today or Monday with actual stats.
