ability to accomplish a great deal during the season.
I think you meant Kevin when talking about domination, but the whole team is doing great this year.

Dunbar has looked impressive when they have had their full complement
of players. Papa is quite simply the fastest player in the state in terms of
social studies this year. They had a great showing against us (Russell) at
Vandy with what I believe to be all their starters.
I don't usually think of myself as a speed player, but I appreciate the props. Thanks (I'm assuming on the name here, but do correct me if I'm wrong) Kip, but we have a lot of work to do. For example at Vandy, we had a great game against Russell followed by a horrible match against Dorman. Basically, we have the same problem a lot of teams in the state have, that is, consistently being able to put up big numbers. As for Simon Kenton, we are supposed to scrimmage them in early December, but I don't know what to expect. Central Hardin thrashed our team at Hart County, but I wasn't there, so I cannot report much aside from Stefan being a solid player. And Henry Clay, which goes largely unmentioned because they play in our league/district, looks especially good this year. I expect them to beat their share of teams at State.

Central Hardin - very streaky and capable of knocking off good teams
I'm glad were finally getting some recognition. I must agree; at the moment we are quite streaky. We played well against Dunbar (although, Papa was not there), but we played maybe our worst match of the tournament against Russell just two games afterward. But, I am hoping after we get two starters back from band, we will be more consistent.

At governor's cup, the frontrunners, IMO, are Johnson Central, Russell, and Madisonville N. Hopkins. I believe Central Hardin (I am trying not to be biased) will be solid before the year is done and has upset potential, and I have not seen Dunbar while Papa was playing or Danville at all this year.

For more pyramidal questions, Madisonville N. Hopkins and Johnson Central have been impressive. I believe Dunbar should probably be up there and Russell is pretty good as well.

I can honestly say that yes there is alot of time between now and march for dupont manual (my team). We beat Dorman B at ezell which i think has been our best win all season. They are a very good team especially for being a B team. Remember that was with our full team. At Vandy we did not have our full team (no daniel, our best player) and we played russell and walton both very closely and johnson central, the latter until the second half. We had our full team at hart county we just got beat by good teams russell and MadNoHo. I will not blame it on the questions or anything else, but at state qr everyone should be ready for us to make some noise. I believe we will bounce back in january and february and look strong at vandy spring and dunbar. I don't think we can make it to dorman bc of a jefferson county quick recall tournament.

Bottomline we haven't lived up to our expecations this first semester, but we will turn it up next semester and hopefully be a force to reckon with and make a good showing at nationals like in the past 2 years (7th and 12th respectively).

In my area I expect Madisonville from region 2, and from region 3 I expect either Apollo or Edmonson.

My predictions (excluding 15):

1: Lone Oak
2: Madisonville North Hopkins
3: Apollo or Edmonson
4: Adair County
5: Central Hardin
6: DuPont Manual
7: Eastern
8: Shelby County
9: Simon Kenton
10: Fleming County
11: Paul Laurence Dunbar
12:Danville
13: Clay County
14: Letcher County Central
15: ...N/A (I'm from Johnson Central)
16: Russell

Eastern won't win region 7 I don't believe. I'm pretty sure they will finish as low as 3rd. Ballard and Atherton both have good teams this year. Ballard vs Atherton has been a battle all year and it could be close. I'm pulling for Ballard to win region 7. The other regions look like they will hold up to the previous post's predictions.

I Have played both Adair and Bowling Green and I think region 4 belongs to Bowling Green but I could be wrong, and I think region 15 is Johnson Central.

In our district, Johnson Central (my school) was 1st in QR and Sheldon Clark was 2nd. Paintsville was beat out.

I took a look at ASAP and the district scores are very competitive.

I wish good luck to everyone in their districts.

I must say, hats off to KAAC. Those questions, the QR ones atleast, were the best GovCup questions I have had the pleasure of playing.
We (Dunbar) had a fairly solid performace, despite my own screwups. Good luck at Regionals everyone!

Those were great questions! I hope the same quality is maintained in regional and state competitions. I thought those were the best KAAC questions I have heard.

District Governor's Cup

Some of the other teams I noted coming out on top in their districts were Ballard, Apollo, Russell, and Dunbar... that's all I remember though.

Alot of districts are not finished w/ competition yet...

Lone Oak had some pretty good scores from District 3. They have yet
to post Danville's or Madisonville North Hopkin's districts, I am sure those
will be two in which everyone is interested.

As for the QR questions, I will echo what everyone else has been saying.
They were different from years past and were so in a good way.

In the quick recall portion, I know we (Russell) didn't have any outstanding
scores, but we did have our JV in for pretty much the second half, if not
longer, of all three matches we played. It also took about a quarter of a
match to get used to the slightly longer question style. At regionals we
should get a better gauge of match scores.

On written testing the best scores this weekend were both in Social
Studies, Kevin Cantrell (Johnson Central) and Ryan Thompson (Russell)
both had 48.

For the whole kit and caboodle, if I had a dark horse pick it would be Lone
Oak out of Region 1, but if Dunbar is this year as they have been in years
past, it will be hard to compete with their depth.

Dunbar has been a tad odd this year. We're an enigma, even to ourselves. And my dark horse is Simon Kenton, they're a solid team.

SK was very good the one time we played them earlier this year (I
believe at Hart County) and as is befitting of the dark horse, I had
almost forgotten about them.

We played Simon Kenton this year.. .actually, I PLAYED and our a-team played SK this year and we lost by about 7 pts. A-Team won by 10, 15 or so. This was at the Fleming Co. Tournament. They are a good team. (I think science may be a little weak though...)

It's not safe to say who I think will be the top quick recall teams in state yet, but here are my preliminary guesses:

1: Madisonville North Hopkins
2: Johnson Central
3: Danville
4: P.L. Dunbar
5: DuPont Manual
6: Russell
7: Simon Kenton

Those are my picks... (not in any particular order.)

We have to wait and see what happens at Regionals though...

It was said today that questions couldn't be released due to some districts' not having their competitions today. Not sure on which ones, though.

8th Region Winner

Posted: Thu Feb 08, 2007 2:41 pm
by Rick_Carr
I think predicting Shelby County to win the 8th region might be reaching. They have had a good team for many years but have dropped off a little recently. Conner High School, North Oldham, and Boone County are the top teams in our region as of the past couple of years (although I think we - Trimble County - will make a little noise at the region this year). Conner had a good JV team at the Challenge this year complementing a strong group coming back from last year. North Oldham still has Harrison Holcomb who I am told has played very strong this year though his test scores fell off a little at districts. Also, Boone County has a very strong Junior playing for them. I believe his name is Spencer. They played the aformentioned Simon Kenton team within 6 points. As far as our team goes at Trimble County, we have a young team that is only getting better. We will be losing 2 starters (no backups), but will be retaining our captain Andrew who is only a sophomore. So the future looks bright.

So how'd regions go for everyone? Also, does anyone know if there will be round robin instead of single elim at state?

Posted: Sat Feb 24, 2007 8:39 pm
by brownboy79
I think round robin would be great for state, but who knows. Dunbar had a below average region, but eh. I really think that while regional and district scores can be impressive and may give some idea about state scores, they are definitely not foolproof, and in some cases give horrible indications. But that's just my opinion.

As for news from our region:

QR:

1) Johnson Central
2) Pikeville

FPS:

1) Johnson Central
1) Paintsville
(Yep... a tie.)

As for the others, we did very well.

I thought the science tie-breaker was absolutely ridiculous. Of course that could be because I misread it and missed out on placing, lol. (I was tied for fifth as I made some very stupud mistakes, one being the Auxin question).

And yes, it is safe to discuss Regional competition questions as far as I know.

No, it was not at all relevant. I looked at the essay at the start, thought
that I wasn't reading the prompt correctly, took the rest of the test, and
when I got to it, was once again amazed by the absurdity of the open
response. I'm still reasonably happy with my score, but I can't believe
that tie-breaker.

I also heard that the FPS fuzzy, UP, etc., were kind of funky. Being that I
am not deeply involved with FPS, I don't really know what the heck all
that means. Can anyone enlighten me on what was up?

The left side of the state bracket is stacked! I'm glad we (manual) are on the right side. There will be state power house battles in the second round on the left side.

Basically the fuzzy was an action plan which made finding problems very difficult. My team placed second but I think we could have did better with a "normal" fuzzy.

Yep. I noticed that too. We, Johnson Central are affected by the left-side bracket, also. I wish it was more...well, fair.... lol.

Of course we don't have a perfect world where the best teams will all face each other in the end and all make it to the end, so yeah... I guess I can't complain. I guess it's sort of "luck of the draw".

Actually of the major teams (please don't get offended if I leave your team out. Say something if I do, I mean this is a messageboard, so jump in) the bracket isn't as stacked on the left side as I previously said. On the top half of the left side you have Johnson Central and Simon Kenton. The bottom left is really the stacked part of the bracket with Dunbar, and Danville and Central Hardin. The latter two possibly meeting in the second round barring a first round upset. On the right top side of the bracket you have manual and Madisonville North Hopkins. Then in the bottom right you have Russell and I don't know how good Pikeville is this year but they could potentially meet Russell in the second round.

Good Luck to everyone and hopefully someone will reply bc this thread is way too dead.

They just take all the teams that won their region and then they face teams who placed second in their region and where they put the matches in the bracket is supposed to be completely random.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to keep up with the season this year. From what I gather it's pretty much the same schools making the same noise. I plan to attend the state tournament coming up just to see how it all plays out given the new changes of KAAC (PAC team and question writing). As far as predictions, though, I'm not really at liberty to say. I hear that Johnson Central has been pretty good, but I hear that Russell has been the powerhouse in the state for the most part. Also, word has it that Pikeville wasn't so far behind Johnson Central *in quick recall* at regionals. I'm sure this year will be an interesting one at the state level. Good luck to everyone.

Not meaning to be rude... but in all honesty, it was a pretty big defeat... We beat Pikeville by around 20 to 30 points. Russell has been very good this year, but I'm not so sure that they would be the state powerhouse.

I agree with the previous post I hadn't heard of pikeville being that amazing and Russell is doing well this year but I wouldn't put them up there as a state powerhouse this year. I am really interested in seeing if anyone sees any upsets in the first round or anybody who is maybe flying under the radar.

I'm betting that the top 7 big dogs for this year's Gov. Cup QR tourney is (in completely random order: )

1: Paul Laurence Dunbar
2: Johnson Central
3: Danville
4: duPont Manual
5: Central Hardin
6: Russell
7: Madisonville- North Hopkins

I'm sure they'll be surprises and there will be some close battles... this year will be VERY interesting.
