I don't discount Monteverdi's phenomenal influence on post-rennaissance music, and he is definitely much more question worthy than Peri (there's probably a reason Dafne didn't stick around.) All I'm saying is they should retire the question "What is the first opera, etc." about Monteverdi's Orfeo because it is incorrect.

Wow, it's a good thing we have you to cut through all those subtle musicological questions. Take THAT, Gordian knot!charlieDfromNKC wrote:Another one I thought of that I've seen frequently. Any question dealing with the first opera. All of these questions are looking for something related to Monteverdi and "Orfeo," but really the first opera is by a composer named Jacopo Peri and is called "Dafne." The reason no one knows about it is because the score doesn't exist anymore, but it is definitely the first opera.
