Vanderbilt ABC XXXVI - Oct 31-Nov 1, 2008

Post by vandyhawk » Fri May 16, 2008 6:20 pm

I won't be having much to do with the event, but I figured I should post a date claim here for Vanderbilt ABC XXXVI on Oct 31-Nov 1, 2008. Further details will be announced at a later time.

Are any details, even vague ones, available for this tournament? Charter is doing a feasibility study and it would help if I could face an administrator with concrete information. Thanks.

Word is that UVA has gone to using an HSAPQ set for their tournament (can anyone over there confirm that?), and since ABC has relied on swapping with them for the last six years and given the relative inexperience of the club this year, Jack (manyo2 on here) is in talks with HSAPQ to use their second 20/20 set, which would presumably be different than the one used at UVA based on the set availability dates, but hopefully that will be worked out by this weekend. By the way, this may annoy some on the board and is only a thought I had just now, but given the comments we got after last spring's tournament did not include comp. math, I'd guess it's not out of the question that 1/1 would be inserted. It's just a regional thing - southeast state formats have a lot of comp. math...and that's where I'll stop so we don't derail a thread.

As for format, I don't anticipate Jack making any dramatic changes, so that Friday night will have 4 Swiss paired rounds to help make Sat. morning brackets for RR pool play, followed by playoffs in the afternoon. Since I'm not "officially" speaking for Vandy anymore, I'll say that I would personally love to see bracketed playoffs, but the regional norm is to do single elimination, so that is more likely unless there is a strong show of support for something else, like doing single elim down to top 4 and then doing a RR among those, etc.

Anyway, hope that helps until the real announcement comes shortly, as soon as the questions arrangement is complete.

Quick update here since Jack sent me the details, but our website server is doing something funky and I haven't been able to access it. This tournament will use the second 20/20 (mACF) set of HSAPQ. The whole announcement will be posted once the vandy studentorg server situation is resolved, hopefully soon, but it's hard to tell based on past experiences.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: As opposed to what was originally announced, the set used will be the first set of 20/20 tossup/bonus format (mACF) questions. This set is the same one being used by the Univ of MD on Sept 28, but is NOT the same one being used by Univ of VA on Oct 25 and by Brindlee Mtn on Dec 6. This will allow people to go to both ABC and then either Cav Classic or Brindlee Mtn's tournament.

Mr. Barry, just send another email. From what I heard, someone besides Jack was doing registrations at first, so it's possible some info got lost in the transition. I'll make sure they go back and check, but it's probably best to just resend it. I also dug through the junk folder the other day and found a couple registration emails, but that only keeps stuff for 30 days, so if that is what happened to yours, hopefully it was the only one...

Pretty sure that score was 470-310 Dorman A over Pikeville, since I was reading in that room. Dorman had a bigger lead but Pikeville answered the last 5 tossups I think. Anyway, time to actually get some sleep this year before Saturday rounds.

I think I have finally recovered from the eight-hour bus trip back home!

I wish to congratulate Matt and Jack for a great tournament. The tournament was well-run, the questions were good, and the competition was great.

Congratulations to Dorman; they certainly have an awesome team. We had the pleasure of playing them in the Swiss Pair rounds on Friday night. We certainly are nowhere near being in their league, but my kids enjoyed playing against one of the best teams in the country. Not only are the Dorman young men great competitors but they seem to be a group of class individuals as well.

I was also impressed with the team from James Island. We lost to them in the quarterfinals and I would certainly have to count them among the elite teams.

We would love to be able to come to more tournaments, but Pikeville High School is a small Class A school (high school enrollment of about 350) and funds are always a limiting factor in our ability to travel out of state. However, we hope to make the Vandy Spring tournament and a few other out-of-state tournaments if all goes well.

Again, thanks to Matt and Jack for a great tournament.

Did this tournament feature the normal 20/20 format with no powers? Looking at the scores, I'm guessing that there were bounceback bonuses and no negs, but even so, there are some very impressive combined scores.

Daichi, it was indeed 20/20 with 30 point bounce-back bonuses and no negs. Out of 800 possible points, Dorman and Pikeville combined for 780 in the last round of the Swiss-paired rounds on Friday night - quite impressive indeed! Both Semifinal games on Saturday scored in the mid 700s, 740 and 750 I believe - again, quite impressive. There were several very strong teams at this tournament, as one might imagine.

Mr. Rountree seems to have covered it. I'd have to agree that the scores were quite good in many of the games - relates to that discussion that comes up from time to time about the huge disparity between the top and middle to bottom HS teams I think. In case people were wondering, because of the sheer number of teams, the portion of moderators that are inexperienced volunteers, and the fact that there are bouncebacks, we've never done individual stats (except one spring tournament a while back) that would allow for bonus conversion numbers.

I echo what Mr. Keller wrote. I would also add that the quality and consistency of the questions had a lot to do with the scores in many cases. The questions were well-written and edited in my opinion. There were very few overly-arcane bonus parts, which probably kept bonus conversions for many teams in the mid 20s for the entire tournament, including the playoffs. I think HSAPQ did a very solid job with this mACF set, and I look forward to hearing more of their questions in the future.

I disagree somewhat about the quality of the questions. I was a reader for s few rounds. There were typos and incorrect information in some instances, making them difficult to read. And the syntax, or lack there of, in the sentences made them difficult to read and to understand. There were repeated questions where a previous bonus/toss up might appear in another round. And in the first round the numbering was off. Plus, I don't think you need 150 words to ask a good question.

Actually I think that's dead on. The thing is 150 words translates to 10 lines and I'm not sure which questions are this long.

Well, seeing how HSAPQ policy allows a maximum of six lines, I don't think 150 word questions happened.

Ms. Howell is correct about a few repeats and errors, though I don't think anything was too egregious as to affect an outcome. I think I noted most of them and sent them off to HSAPQ so they can fix them before the next use of the set too. As for proofreading-related things, the set was pretty decent about that - I'd call it between average and good if looking at it comparatively. For the length, I thought that 5-6 lines of whatever font was used was pretty much equivalent to the 4-5 lines of 10pt TNR of our past ABC editions. I didn't personally hear any complaints about that either, but I guess that doesn't mean there weren't any.

As I was not a reader, I can't really speak to the syntax or spelling errors in the questions. I can say that neither I nor my team had any real difficulty in following where the questions were going, or what they were looking for. In fact, a couple of my players thought this set was one of the best we have heard all year - maybe even the best? I think 4-6 sentences (or lines if you prefer) is adequate for asking a good pyramidal question and I thought these were sympatico with what I would consider good pyramidal questions. (I guess if they weren't, then HSAPQ should drop the "P" from their organization's name )
