2009 PACE NSC
With the announced tentative date being taken for the HSNCT, the NSC is now tentatively scheduled for May 23-24 weekend, which is Memorial Day weekend. GMU convocation occurs the weekend before. I want to be sure that this is okay with all the PACE staff since this is obviously rather short-notice, plus I am checking the availability of rooms though it won't be obvious since this is move-in/first-weekend of class at Mason. Classroom reservations is a bit busy.

Is there a roster to fill out, like last year? viewtopic.php?f=20&t=5679&
Whenever "Falkland Islands" is the answer, you know that you're supposed to say "Islas Malvinas" because they truly belong to Argentina.

Tweeting during the NSC should not include any suggestion of answers (right, wrong, or funny). Scores however are encouraged for tweeting. Please use the #NSC2009 tag in your messages (someone else took #NSC09). Followers can search twitter for #NSC2009 posts easily which should hopefully appear at http://twitter.com/#search?q=%23NSC2009 .

Re: 2009 PACE NSC
Is the restriction because the questions are being reused somewhere else or because you're worried about one room running an hour behind another room?
Re: 2009 PACE NSC
That definitely happened last year.
I saw round 12 played in the top bracket, and then got to see my B team play the same packet in consolation.

Rather than assume or attempt to ascertain a time after which you may discuss the questions, it is best to wait until the "all clear" has been given from the tournament director before you launch discussion. This all clear will likely come in the form of a PACE NSC Question Discussion thread.Shcool wrote:I'm just asking so that students know whether or not they can publicly comment on the questions Saturday or Sunday night.

Re: 2009 PACE NSC
Between people begging for us not to refresh Taft and the chat having stopped, I'm thinking the network may have cut out again. Either that or everyone's at lunch. Either way, here's what's happened in the top playoff brackets:
Didi: State College 6-1, Georgetown 6-1, Stow-Munroe 4-3, Dorman 3-4, Rancho 3-4, James Monroe 3-4, Brookwood 2-5, Southside 1-6
Gogo: Wilm Charter 6-1, Maggie Walker 6-1, Hunter 5-2, Walt Johnson 5-2, T Jeff 2-5, Walton 2-5, Det Catholic 1-6, Chaska 1-6.
All ties are broken by playoff points. SC lost to Rancho, Georgetown lost to SC. WC lost to WJ, Maggie Walker lost to WC. Each group will play one game which is functionally a semifinal.

Re: 2009 PACE NSC
Congratulations Charter - and State College too - and everybody for a great weekend. That was an exciting finals game. I'm glad i got to help out scorekeeping (and eventually moderating about 9-10 matches) and meet dozens of wonderful people that i'd been looking forward to meeting for a long time. Longer post tomorrow or something when i have time and energy.

Re: 2009 PACE NSC
A great tournament final---down to the last toss-up which SC won!!!---and then missed the decisive bonuses!?!?
Anyone have any idea what the topic of the final bonuses were that a team as outstanding as SC would miss them? What a heartbreaker for State, and what exhilarating steals for Charter. I followed on the internet and was on the edge of my seat, since SC made a furious rally to bring it down to the last question. And what a great finale for Charter & for PACE---one of the truly great games.
And, is there anywhere we can find out placements for teams #5-#64---all played a game 15 with their paired opposite in the other 8 team bracket within each set of 16 teams, did they not?
Any help on Round 15 scores would be appreciated.

I think Mike Bentley will have the final match on his podcast, if you subscribe to that or wish to subscribe to that. In the meantime, if I heard correctly, it was Henry III/De Monfort's parliment/Louis IX. All stats should be up on Taft at some point in the near future.
EDIT "it" being the final bonus.

Re: 2009 PACE NSC
I'd just like to point out a minor error in the number of games played by each team member on Walter Johnson (and possibly on other schools as well): Both Daichi Ueda and Kuo-Kai Chin played 14 games as it correctly states, but Andi Shahu and Ophir Lifshitz played just 4 games, and Ashu Joshi and Dana Gordin played only 10.
Re: 2009 PACE NSC
If I'm reading the stats right, they show 14 games played for everyone, but the number of tossups heard is correctly scaled to reflect how many games each person actually played. Ophir's 140 TUH do indicate that he played 5 games, though, so his inclusion in the Dorman C game may be a typo.hangfromthefloor wrote:I'd just like to point out a minor error in the number of games played by each team member on Walter Johnson (and possibly on other schools as well): Both Daichi Ueda and Kuo-Kai Chin played 14 games as it correctly states, but Andi Shahu and Ophir Lifshitz played just 4 games, and Ashu Joshi and Dana Gordin played only 10.

Edit: Never mind - problem solved. It has nothing to do with quiz bowl.
Does anyone know a Whitney Shingleton who might be associated with anyone who might have gone to PACE? Or is involved in quiz bowl at all? A Raleigh Charter coach found a check from this person in one of our cars and we are trying to figure out what it might be for.
Thanks for any information - you can contact me off list if you know anything. egrunden AT raleighcharterhs DOT org

Being especially curious, and waiting for over a week, I like to get the ball rolling on the final crossover games that haven't been posted yet. I think I have this right, so here goes....
For 27th and 28th place, New Trier (IL) 300 def. Kellenberg A (NY) 265.
For 41st and 42nd place, Kellenberg B (NY) 275 def. Seton Hall (NJ) 225.
Anyone else want to contribute their crossover games?

Re: 2009 PACE NSC
It really is. You guys are going to be pretty freakin good next year, if you didn't realize. But you're good dudes, so except for when you play us, we'll be rooting for you.Prof.Whoopie wrote:I'd say that's pretty good for being stuck with a 0-10 handicap before we even showed upBuzzerZen wrote: 53 - Lewis County/St. Anselm's scabs

Dunbar A was generally stronger statistically, but they lost 4 playoff matches by a combined total of 105 points--including a 15-point game against Dunbar B.ImaPC wrote:Out of curiosity, how did this happen?24th - Paul Laurence Dunbar High School's second team

Re: 2009 PACE NSC
Dunbar was really deep this year. Simply put, they had two of the top 4 (could argue top 3) teams in the state of KY this year, and will probably be pretty good next year (on a national level) with the people they have coming back from the top two teams. If Dunbar A faltered even a little bit, Dunbar B was good enough to beat them out.

Re: 2009 PACE NSC
True but one of Dunbar B's players, who contributed a relatively solid 37.78 ppg, was sick for 5 of our games. If he were present, I believe the statistical gap between the two teams would've narrowed by alot.Inter et Inter wrote:Dunbar A was generally stronger statistically, but they lost 4 playoff matches by a combined total of 105 points--including a 15-point game against Dunbar B.ImaPC wrote:Out of curiosity, how did this happen?24th - Paul Laurence Dunbar High School's second team

Re: 2009 PACE NSC
Whoops, I thought I had lost these by not backing them up when I reformatted my new laptop, but it looks like I was indeed smart enough to upload these before I did that. I'll edit them and post these today.Dark Ages: Fae wrote:Does anyone know when the audio-recordings of the PACE rounds will be up?
